"Dead bodies rot in fields and streams because the living ones are rotten" Only this movie and this cast could turn such a horrible thought in to such poetry!

By a great coincidence, Katharine Hepburn was 61 when she made this film -- exactly Eleanor of Aquitaine's age in 1183. The lady in my life commented: "It's a great movie; but she looks MUCH too good for a woman who's had ten children."

Damn, if this monologue doesn't totally apply today..... Just replace "knives" with "guns" and "1183" with "2016." Wow.

When Richard pulls out the knife and goes after John, their mother doesn't even flinch. So much in such a small thing.

Part of the shear joy of the Lion in Winter IS the verbal jousting as a metaphore for the relationships enjoyed (I'm using that in the ironic sense lest anyone complain that these people seemed to enjoy nothing) by these historical figures. Trust me - in real life, I doubt if they were this entertaining.

This is my favorite role of Katherine's. Her combination of humor and nastiness is a triumph.

Honestly the fact that Katherine Hepburn is never not being Katherine Hepburn makes her performances even more encapsulating.

That these densely packed lines are brilliant and brilliantly delivered by Hepburn is breathtaking even after all these years. Movies like this one are the ones I watch on dvd year after year.
