Great video Ray I just found your video, I'm looking to get a Phenix black diamond hybrid 6'6 XH for deep sea fishing grouper and amberjacks, do you think the shimano trinidad would be a good combo? Would it also be ideal for catching yf tuna? Thank you!

I've caught yellowtail on lots of equipment. CalStar Grafighter 800M is a fine stick with a Daiwa SLX50. Good for jig stick or fly lining. I'd user. CalStar 765L with a ShimanonTLD30 with 50 pound mono. Push the 2 speed reel into granny low and grind and lift. Grind and lift. A thight plate will help a lot bracing it with a locking gimble. I've also taken 20 pound tails on Shimano Calcutta 730 rod and Shimano Calcutta 700 reel.

My favorite surface iron for big channel islands barracuda is the Salas 7x in green sardine or mint sardine. For some reason they just seem to like those over the Tady 45.

Why did you stop using the Lexa for the Saltis/Tranxx? Wouldn’t the Lexa be more suited for YT irons? Looking at getting a Lexa for my next Iron stick but saw you went to the Tranx then to the Saltis. Saltis seems like a step back from the Lexa for irons to me

The lexa 400, is what I got to learn how to cast open faced conventional reels. The more comfortable I got with casting and them more familiar I got with the proper cadence on swimming a jig, the more I understood that a bigger spool and open face reel is more ideal for how I fish. If you were to speak specs wise as in cast control and drag pressure, in theory yes the saltist would be a step back, however a saltist casts incredibly smooth compared to a lot of open face reels I’ve used! If I were to fish a baitcasters for surface irons now, it would definitely be the Tranx 500 or the new Lexa 500, for the size of the spool and also so that I could spool up a lot of mono for easier casting and more stretch to absorb head shakes
