Fishing Tony Reyes! "The Video"

Ойын-сауық

Last September, in 2023, I had the opportunity to fish aboard the Tony Reyes for my second time ever!
The "Tony Reyes Fishing Tours" are a mothership operation that launches out of San Felipe, Mexico and focuses on fishing the Midriff Islands in the Sea of Cortez for an abundance of exotic species!
The main specie we decided to focus on targeting for majority of our trip was Leopard Grouper / Cabrilla!
Cabrilla are a super strong fighting grouper specie that lives in the shallows and really likes reaction lures!
This is true power fishing at its finest. Casting burn baits and covering as much water as possible fan casting at shallow water structure.
Aside from the fishing, the whole operation is such an incredible experience in itself. All hard working and super respectful topside and kitchen crew!
Overall an amazing and unforgettable experience!
Highly recommend booking a trip if you ever get the chance!
This is only the teaser for the full length videos. make sure to keep an eye out for future day by day vlogs of this trip! Dropping very soon!

    I’d recommend 7’6” - 8’, 8’6”max. Just because it’s mostly short distance accurate casting instead of long distance fan casting.

    I will be putting together a tackle talk soon going over all the gear and tackle I use. But the set ups I have been using on these trips are Daiwa Lexa 400TW and HD, paired with Phenix Titan Long Fall 710 ML and MH rods. Really really great jerk bait rods believe it or not!

    Hi Ray Wanted to know your thoughts on the Diawa Lexa 400 winn for throwing surface irons for yellowtail I have the reel and used it only once but would like to get more use , not a great caster with a conventional reel but practicing . The Lexa I can cast pretty good with but worried about the line capacity ? Any thoughts would be great look like your season started off pretty good

  • @Dirty.Hookers

    @Dirty.Hookers

    Ай бұрын

    I actually started off with a lexa 400 HD as my first surface iron reel. I had it spooled up filled with 50lb braid, and would do a +10ft 40lb mono leader. I had an 8’6” rod but maybe would even do a 9ft if it felt right. And I have my mono go from about 6”-8” of the line guide, up each guides of the rod, and snip about 10” from where I would usually have my jig hanging on a cast. The reason for that, it’ll give me a few chances to cut and retie before needing a whole new leader. Another option I did, was about half filled with 50lb braid, and about a 60-80yd top shot of 40 mono. Same reason for both, to keep the connection knot from going in and out of my line guide

  • @Dirty.Hookers

    @Dirty.Hookers

    However I will say, As I’ve grown to fish surface irons as much as I do, I will say a narrow open face conventional reel is a lot more efficient than a bait caster. A lexa 400 will put you in the right direction and help you understand how to cast big reels

    Flag cabrilla are one of my favorite fish ever. I catch em on the shore in punta mita, just below puerta Vallarta. 2500 spinning setup and 20lb leader, and man they are literally spotties on cocaine . Using same spottie gear, 3” swimbaits

    When it comes to brain, everyone has their own personal preference. Some people like hollow core, some like very thick and wirey, and some like silky smooth, or extra thin. I can’t remember what brand I got for for my 100# set up, but I will say, you should go to your local tackle shop and see what feels best to you! With the night time bluefin jigging, it puts a lot of pressure with thick line against your thumb, so it’s super important you’re using something that’s comfortable for you
