"If universities have made a mistake"? Really? OK, here's how it works. Step one: I am an alcoholic. If you don't take this step, nothing changes. The university version: we are orthodox left. Now, say it like you believe it and you can take step two on the way to heterodoxy. If you falter and feel weak, call Larry Arnn or Robert George. Also, as long as your faculties are 90-99% left leaning, there is no hope for achieving the goal of heterodoxy in practice. As an example, I think it is pretty clear that Chicago has not lived up to the principles it is credited with establishing. You have dug a very deep hole. If you want to get out, first, stop digging.

I see many lessons that can be drawn from Covid-19.. from the scientific community, to the FEDERAL, STATE/LOCAL, CORPORATE and INDIVIDUAL level for the next pandemic. For example... Research on un-Patenable / Low-Profit *PHARMACEUTICAL INTERVENTIONS * Ivermectin, Bacillus Calmette-Guérin (BCG) / quinine vaccine? Black Cumin Seed/Oil / L-arginine / iodine antiseptic / Vit.D / Omega-3? Green Tea /ECGC Research on *NON-PHARMACEUTICAL INTERVENTIONS* : a) covid sniffing dogs at airports and other high density areas b) Far UV-C disinfectant or Cedars-Sinai UV-A Healight, Hydrogen-Peroxide (H202), and essential-oils containing masks c) Increasing Nitric Oxide and the role of metabolic -health and exercise d) Keeping indoor humidity > 50% , and use if ceiling fans to lower viral load especially in nursing homes e) Research into effect of closing borders early vs economic impact *FEDERAL LEVEL* : Should there be Warp-Speed vaccine development, allow *HUMAN CHALLENGE TRIALS* Allow doctors to tele/practice across state/country borders Increase what Registered Nurses are allowed to do Setup infrastructure to allow quick ramp up production of: Antigen Tests, N95 masks that have some far-UVC/hydrogen-peroxide , antibody cloning machines , Generic lab/vaccine supplies and reagents/vials *STATE/LOCAL* : Real-Time/Online status of Hospital Occupancy rate Virus tracking via waste water / sewer Recording cases with pertinent information (age, if/when vaccinated, which vaccine(s), etc) Road-Bridge Repair/Construction (since many will choose to isolate reducing traffic) Coordinating how to best distribute vaccines, including the option of STARTING vaccination with those least at risk (young) in order to open the economy sooner... or, given that supplies will be limited, concentrating on everyone getting the first dose (as to be ~90% protected), rather than using the 2nd dose for 95% protection to fewer people. Create Mobile drop-off / pick-up centers for home-good donations *CORPORATE* Incentive Google/Apple/Microsoft/Amazon to develop a contact-tracing app for those that would voluntarily use it. *INDIVIDUAL* : Daily use of rapid-cheap-antigen-tests,, tracing apps, and/or measuring of one's Nitric Oxide levels, silent hypoxia / Oxygen saturation (SpO2) percentage, Sense of smell Physical Distancing, Wearing N95 masks and work on improving overall metabolic health Get yourself in order first.. living trust, cleaning/donating, repair.. then if you can, check and help on your neighbors/community. Using your downtime to gain more marketable skills Comparing outcomes among countries, regardless of strategy, seems tricky as there's too many other variables: Genetics, average-age, obesity, smokers, vitamin-d level, population-density (% living alone), (natural) borders, religiousness (ex. large indoor church gatherings), community-oriented vs personal-freedom mindset, etc.

When people use words and phrases, they mean to be saying what THEY mean to be saying. Taking offense without determining what they mean is infantile. More often than not it becomes a deliberate distraction where you change the subject in order to dismiss what they are saying.

I can not wrap my head around why anyone's feelings about facts matter. As adults, we are responsible for our feelings and how we act. In school, you are responsible for learning the facts, not controlling the facts. This is so sad....and wrong. My son's college is paid for and with all of the insanity going on in universities, I am not sure I want him around those people. When we fear sending our kids to school, then we are going in the wrong direction. Why do we allow kids to determine what direction ANYTHING goes?

Very salient. Not only is the "oppressor-oppresssed" the wrong measurement, it is a poisonous, calculated diversion, for this dynamic presumes the answer before an argument is even made, by the sheer weight of its dogma. This discussion is essential, informative and is hopeful. It is well reasoned, honest and very well made. Good job, HxA.

Isn't Zionism claiming the role of the oppressed in this conflict? People have a cartoonishly sanguine view of what Zionism was and demanded in the Mandate period. It wasn't "Jews just wanted to move quietly to a "homeland" but the mean Arabs hated us for no reason but anti-semitism" but rather "We need to figure out a way to make a place with nearly no Jews Jewish-majority and we will accomplish this by removing Palestinians via the JNF and armed intimidation". You'd have to just flatly ignore a boatload of primary source documents from the Zionists themselves to deny this. If one is anti-woke and anti-identity politics, how can one look at ZIonism in Mandate Palestina as anything but a victimhood movement making outrageous demands on a third party because of their historical oppression and, yes, colonial victimization (albeit an exaggerated one from 2000 years ago). Anti-woke Zionism is a pure marker that the anti-wokeness is opportunistic, not principled. Special pleading for one weaponized victimhood politics only. I don't think modern Israelis should have to self-deport or self-suicide to make any of this right, but the gaslighting of precisely what has maddened the Palestinians so and not admitting exactly what happened from 1920-1948 is crazy making when you can just read the Zionists themselves talking openly about how the intend to "redeem" the land.

Yes, but... There are predatory bullies who will spot a vulnerability in a person, perhaps the result of being a victim of violence or a physical disability or classic bigotries, and then demand that person routinely subject themselves to insults, challenges and ridicule that people without that characteristic do not experience. Then, when the victim protests, they claim the victim is just weak and needs to "toughen up." The supposed call to resilience is for too many people just a way to seek pornographic, sadistic entertainment. The bullies get off on seeing people who've already been hurt and hurt and hurt be hurt even more. The most important thing to remember is that survivors get to establish healthy boundaries and we do not need to obey anyone. We do get to say we don't want to talk about IT. We do get to say when IT is nobody else's damn business.

exactly. Administrators blackmail faculty into hiring only in certain fields or from certain demographics. Departments have to choose between complying or slow death (departments that don’t hire shrink in size and eventually die as existing faculty retire). They have been openly trampling academic freedom for years now.

The word 'engineer' is most inappropriate for politicians and money greedy governments who are manipulators. Engineering is a practical solution to human needs based on mathematical modelling of applied science. No politician or capitalist is capable of applying engineering logic to their thinking and sales mentality.

What I got from this -- the first proper expert-level discussion of DEI/EDI I've ever seen -- is that it's invaluable in some situations, and is being grossly misapplied in others. The validating surprise for me is that people who are equipped to seriously address the topic mostly agree, and don't hold any of the views that have made the concept so distasteful to me. My opinion on its application has changed, and I have learned I know even less about the topic than I thought. Thanks HxA!

Like practically every organization, each university has an implicit bias towards members who have felt accepted and trusted in them throughout the past. Although chance encounters lead to the momentary integration of different perspectives, leadership will always demand subserviance to the past as they consider it to resemble the ancient wisdom that they believe guides their actions. How do we break the cycle of passing down trauma from mentors to students? Like every student, I must confess I really don't know, and despite my willingness to learn, I don't think leadership comprehends the consequences of their actions more than any other member. Everyone is like a fungal cell in the mycelium, or someone on an assembly line; working hard at something through intuition, never truly understanding what they are producing.

There have been many times I tried standing against the rules, which keep students and staff fighting each other for survival and membership, but while some stood with me I don't know if I changed a thing. However, I do know that many who defended me suffered with me, either getting kicked out with me or ascending the ranks to find out they'd also be risking great losses if they tried to change the system they are now a part of.

I read an article by Musa and really liked it, but was weirded out by the fact that quite a few of his articles were published in venues I take to be right wing mouthpieces. Listening to this wonderful interview explains why he publishes in those venues, while also causing me to reflect on my own biases that explain my own reaction. Thanks for the interview, I'll certainly be pre-ordering Musa's book!

Sampling from questions suggested to me that there's a significant presence of weakly argued dogmatic support or opposition even at a hererodox event. I'm still not convinced it wouldn't be better to dismantle the whole supporting DEI/EDI infrastructure and rebuild from scratch with new foundations directed more at general fairness and support for those who might benefit. I'll settle for less, simply because of the difficulty, but it's also not clear that a future path for something closer to objectives of these guests actually exists. Of course time could provide surprises, but popularity of blinkered orthodoxy vs hererodoxy, still suggests to me, more harmful and unproductive social warring in next decade. Keep up the good fight, as I could be wrong... ❤ The odds for HXA approach do look better than they have for a while! 😊

This for me, somewhat accomplished, the JS Mill objective of engagement with conflicting perspectives. Elsewhere, although there's lots of public dialogue concerning DEI/EDI, very little of it presents considerations or attempts persuasion without dogmatic moralistic certainty. I've only watched the first hour so maybe it deteriorates or improves... But I already know more respect worthy arguments for AND against my initial inclinations! This wasn't a super engaging or immediately rewarding media experience... But, that's what useful informative learning is often like. The costs and discomfort are more immediate and the benefits come more long term after some repetition and variations of the practice. Production values are unfortunately terrible proxies for what's most valuable.

I doubt that any speaker that did not follow the Hamas line would be tolerated on campus. They would at the very least be drowned out by screaming, chanting, drums and perhaps physical violence. The universities are not able to educate under these conditions. Might as well close down and send the students home.
