I cant imagine these phones being that much more powerful than a 48K Speccy. They both use Z80 processors and i cant imagine these have more ram than the Speccy (if these arent modified with more ram). Is it possible that this could be ported to a 48K ZX Spectrum? (Maybe even a 16K one?)
@shiru8bit3 ай бұрын
They're a bit faster (4 MHz), but there is only 2K RAM. Demo uses a 64K ROM, tho, which was a regular feature for these. Yes, it is possible to port it to a 48K Spectrum, but don't forget, there is four phones, so 64K*4 = 256K ROM in total. So either four 48K Spectrums, or an expanded model. It may get sqeezed into 128K with a bit of extra compression, though.
@Wii12353 ай бұрын
@@shiru8bitMakes sense. Although, wouldnt it also be possible to split the animation into 3 parts? As you said, it could be possible to compress it to 128K and 3 X 48 is 144
@shiru8bit3 ай бұрын
@@Wii1235 yes, it is possible to split it into parts. Not makes much sense for a viewer, though, to play a 4 minute song in 4 separate loads. It has been done before, though, with one of the Sega Genesis Bad Apple renditions that came as two separate 4M ROMs.

Here's a similarly cool version of the effect being done on NES: kzread.info/dash/bejne/c3Vt3KmxeszQZco.htmlsi=kCMtYFm42eEY1CTv And I'd say an even more technically impressive version than the one in Axelay that's on SNES again, because of the extra separate layer of semi-transparent shadows under all the structures plus the additional wavy effect on the lava using line-scrolling, but this time it's from Super Turrican 2: kzread.info/dash/bejne/Z3d6xpmqk8Krmrw.htmlsi=jwMX0DtdIGjwKs5l&t=3373

I experimented with the number of displays at first, and came to conclusion that at least 16 is needed (2x8 chunks), but 64 is better (4x16). Software PWM indeed, 2-bit brightness per segment. The mux rate here is 2160 Hz, i.e. 9 digits * 60 frames per seconds * 4 (the animation itself is at 30 FPS, tho). It helped a lot compared to just 1-bit, introduced a kind of a magic feel.
