My impression of the ZX Spectrum has changed dramatically. It's fantastic!

I'm blown away by this! It's amazing to think that the medium has so much untapped potential and if storage wasn't an issue, retro games could've had some unbelievable soundtracks

Except these 1 bit players generally take too much CPU time as well as storage. By the Atari ST though you could do it on interrupt and still have time to do a game.

There are SpecialFX, Phaser1, Earth Shaker, BuzzKick (2 songs), Squat and SquatM (4 songs), and wtbeep (2 songs). My absolute favorite at the moment is SquatM. wtbeep comes second, but it has some technical issues that keep it from being the best choice - it has noticeable hiss, and it is not compatible with +3. Both engines proved to be extremely versatile, albeit pretty heavy on the RAM (barely sqeezed these 11 songs into 48K).

@ well, the real lead in the bleeding edge engine developments today is utz. Although I believe there is always a room for a couple more engines from me as well.
