    Back in the 80s, this kind of stuff was created by using buffers while coding the music, creating a very very very rudimentary sort of pcm by turning on and off the speaker incredibly quickly (its one bit, so that's all it can do, really.) if I recall correctly, it's pitch is limited by processor speed, and the more "channels" added, the pitch fluctuates.

    All of these are 2 channel. 2 and a half perhaps, the half references to the drum sounds that interrupt the two main channels at times. But in general, there is never more than two different sounds/tones playing at once.

    How are the fading volumes made in 1 bit?

  • @shiru8bit

    @shiru8bit

    Жыл бұрын

    Through PFM basically. The engine that is used in the most songs in this collection provides a basic pulse width decay envelope. At first it generates very short pulses at a given frequency, and reduces their duration over time even more, until it gets down to zero.

  • @shiru8bit

    @shiru8bit

    5 жыл бұрын

    Yes, it is monophonic. The sound hardware is as basic as it gets - a loudspeaker connected to a single bit of an output port. All sound has to be generated completel by software, by toggling this bit.

    @@shiru8bit Interesting... and how many times a second can this bit be updated? Also, how is it even possible to generate notes with a single non-analog bit of frequency resolution?

  • @shiru8bit

    @shiru8bit

    5 жыл бұрын

    It depends on sound code design, let's say in 8000-50000 times per second range for Z80 @ 3.5 MHz. The sound bit is not related to frequency by itself. You can turn it on and off using very carefully timed assembly code to get basic square wave at desired frequency. There are many more advanced techniques to produce more complex waveforms, imitate volume levels, etc. Here is some very in-depth info: randomflux.info/1bit/viewtopic.php?id=21

    There are many techniques, ranging from software tricks to composing tricks and exploiting quirks of the human ear perception. One simple technique is to multiplex two 1-bit outputs, alternating between them at a high speed, like, 15000 times per second. More on the matter: randomflux.info/1bit/viewtopic.php?id=21

    No, I do'n't have MIDI for any of these tracks. There are source modules that can be opened with Beepola, though, so you can see the notes, but it is not much readable, as it fills the available two channels very tightly to implement echoing effects: shiru.untergrund.net/files/mus/music_1bit.zip
