System Beeps (2019) - Full Album

System Beeps is a music album in form of an MS-DOS program that features my original music composed for PC Speaker. You can run it on any MS-DOS compatible machine with 8088 or better, and listen to some music in the glorious monophonic square wave. All that you hear here was perfectly possible back in the day on the early XT class machines.

Very nice music. And great presentation overall!
I love vintage monophonic songs
that's more than just "doing it right". the effort that went into this is insane. awesome tunes!
such soothing sounds for such a harsh musical environment
This is ace work, highly impressive! :D
I remember Inertia Player on PC speaker - it was incredible if you had a good PC speaker. I also remember customizing a couple of PCs with cardboard baffles around the internal frame mounted speaker to give it much more body... MS Speaker driver, and we tuned the level using the Trumpton roll call clip.

Oh I remember that Windows 3 speaker driver. Ate all your CPU and garbled the sound if you dared to move your mouse (at least on my 386sx20). :-) But awesome stuff indeed, especially Inertia Player's speaker PCM output (though my first experience with that was a cracktro with that feature which totally blew my mind back then).
I was looking for something like this, thank you!
Very good. For me this was a soothing album.
The song "System Beeps" needs to be like 2 or 3 minutes longer, I have been driving my co-workers crazy with this all day! Great stuff!
Not exactly what I was looking for but WOW!
This is amazing. I want to only listen to music like this the rest of my life.
Amazing that I'm amazed by a PC speaker (my nemesis!). Cool tunes.
This is such good work! It's so amazing what you can do with only 1 sound channel!
Coming Year ❤
This is awesome, we'd like to have these tunes as part of our programming in our chiptune/demoscene radio

Sure you can.The music has been released under CC-BY, so you can use and redistribute it freely. Thanks!
Hey, I have the same laptop! It's quit a luxurious system for its time, with the tft screen and kickstand legs. Also I hacked it to add a joystick and midi port.
Excellent! It would be great to hear it directly (generated, not recorded) and as music for a hackandslash game:)
I used this on a modern gaming laptop with a gtx 1660ti running freedos and it was dope
As somebody who was there, this is amazingly impressive. Noting sounded close to this back then!
This is AWESOME! =) Thanks man!
This was the very first thing I uploaded to my 286. :) One of my best chipune albums and sounds better IRL.

Very cool and FUN! Echos of the 8086 PC.
Nice to see a track from AON demo here
Serious skill and keen ear! Very well done.
High quality!!
awesome
You clearly got snubbed at the Grammys.
This is fantastic! Would be phenomenal to hear this as a video game ost!
Lovely stuff! Thank you for making this. :)
This is really great and reading your Habr post really reminded me of the old hardware systems I used and built growing up and how much respect the game composers of the time like You Takada, Michael Land, George Sanger , and countless other deserve even today.
very nice to hear the more detailed AONDEMO tune
Love it, love it love it! That is really fantastic. I just had to subscribe to see what else you come up with.

In fact it was the other way around. It was the first piece I ever composed for the speaker back in 2017, as a test for the tool I later made the album with. When I worked on the PX3 sound code in 2018, I just recreated this song (it is a little bit different, actually) using the tool I developed for PX3. It served up as a test again, but somehow ended up in the final product (there were plans for me to participate as an extra composer on PX3, but it was eventually skipped due to the deadline).
Pixel Rain @10:07 is fire.

I imagine listening to this on my Windows XP dell optiplex desktop. the pc speaker on it has a loud volume. I think I prefer listening to it in a VMware virtual machine.
I have a question for you. Why does it sound good? One beeper
Amazing. Is it all pure code or are you using some kind of tracker? I presume you only use one voice?
@shiru8bit
Yes, it is just only voice, that's the purpose of this creation, to show off how much can be squeezed out of single voice before going any true polyphony. In order to do this I made a custom VST, and composed all the music in Reaper (a modern DAW similar to FL Studio or Cubase).

@@shiru8bit Incredible work Mr. Shiru. Greetings from France.

@shiru8bit
@axtrifonov

Question about source core. How You convert RPP to BIN that You pack using MegaLZ?
Can one of these songs + all the playback routines fit in a boot sector?
@shiru8bit
It depends on the boot sector size, but in general fitting any real (human composed) music into something of 256-512 bytes is an extreme tech feat. Smallest of the songs on SB is almost 5K - way too large. Smallest LZ-packed song is 707 bytes, which is closer, but something like 200-300 bytes is needed for play routines and LZ depacker. So the answer - one of these won't fit as is, but technically it is possible to create something similar that would fit.
:O
Shouldn't "Square Wave" be called "Into Battle"? :)
Dubstep remix of this pls!!!!!
Is that a real-time FFT you're displaying?
@shiru8bit
No, it is a real-time fake. As code always knows which note (frequency) plays at a given moment, and there is always only one, it simply adds the fundamental harmonic of the note with a little bit of bell surroundings to the graph. So it looks a bit similar to the real thing, but it is not.
