Garland of Books

Garland of Books

My channel is focused on Charlotte Mason method Home Education & Life Education, what motherhood and womanhood looks like for me as I strive and struggle to follow Christ, and my literary life and tsundoku therapy - though I don’t know whether I’m alleviating or amplifying my tsundoku 😂. I especially enjoy classical works of literature, art, and music. My wish is for homeschool to expand from “school” into the fullness of education for as many people as possible. I hope my channel will be an encouragement to you!

    I came here from your comment on my video, and this isn't what I was expecting! But refreshing and needed nonetheless, as I often get a bit caught up in secular stuff. I'm going to have a look at some of these.

  • @garlandofbooks4494
    @garlandofbooks4494Ай бұрын

    Well I’m glad it was refreshing 😄 I love to read a variety of things, for fun, for challenging my mind and faith, for building family culture / inside jokes, and now for learning French too. If you’re not reading, you’re not thinking! As a Christian, I think of a lot of literature as puzzle pieces. When authors write, they see and reveal different parts of the puzzle of life, but often they’re missing certain pieces, and sometimes they’re trying to force in a piece that doesn’t belong. Sometimes they’re seeking hope in things that can give temporary pleasure or relief, but not ultimate hope and joy. I think the truth that Christians have can fill in some of those pieces. Thinking and talking through these things is so fun! It makes me feel alive, reminds me of the hope I have, enriches my faith and my relationships with my husband, children, and friends.

    @garlandofbooks4494 I've been thinking about getting a consultation from them. You're the only channel I've found that has shown any of their book recommendations. When you add your second child, will they both be studying the same time period? Or will they be completely separate?

  • @garlandofbooks4494
    @garlandofbooks44944 ай бұрын

    @@michellecalais2482 we will do the same time period across all forms, that’s really something I love about ADE vs AO (lots of people in my area follow AO). I even read 2 family reads that included my student child and not quite student that were WWII books that they were both able to enjoy, while were doing the 1900s-present this year. It’s really enjoyable to all be following the same time period, including me! I’ve read a couple of books myself for this time period too. I’m also about to have my first consultation in anticipation of adding another student. I want to join as many subjects as possible. My children are between 2-3 years apart, so they’ll be in forms with each other sometimes, and not at other times.

  • @garlandofbooks4494
    @garlandofbooks4494 Жыл бұрын

    That would be a fun topic! My number 1 way I organize them is probably size. Some of our shelves will only fit small books, so if I want everything to fit then the smallest books must go there 😂. Likewise some larger books will only fit on certain tall shelves. I should do a shelf walk through sometime though. I love organizing the books. I do like categories, I have a chronological history & biography section, lots of categories that are more free reading, and some things are specifically for certain years of home education and I have those separate, mainly on the shelf in this video actually.

    My daughter isnt 6 yet and we just started incorporating Charlotte Mason style (other than math and phonics we read living books) in our homeschooling. We're not following her style to a T so to speak. Anywhoo, question is how do you get your child to narrate??? I have to prompt my daughter a lot. And once she gets going she can keep narrating then she stops and I gotta prompt her again (like for example what happens after the frog jumped into the pond).

    What are your thoughts on this bible now that you've had it for a bit?

  • @garlandofbooks4494
    @garlandofbooks4494 Жыл бұрын

    I really like it! I ended up getting a 2nd one in the other translation they offer, NET, to be my beginner reader’s 1st Bible - after considering a ridiculous number of options!! NET has an easier rated reading level thank NKJV. I think the devotional engagement will be the perfect type of prompting as he grows and reads better. The amount of notes in a study Bible can be overwhelming, so I think this and the pictures and the single line text will make for easier reading for him for many years, and I may introduce him to a study Bible once he gets to the teen years. He already loves the pictures, and I love them for him rather than the cartoonish bibles I’ve seen presented for children which I don’t like as much.

    The way this video concluded with the mother’s diary impacted me somehow. I am a single woman without any children and may never be married, but I want a heart for my children in the faith and want to leave a legacy of the Gospel. I thought of a woman in my own life who never had biological children but left an impact on me. Thank you for sharing this part of your story; it touched the heart of a single woman who wants to be wholeheartedly devoted to Jesus.

  • @garlandofbooks4494

    Thank you for your comment, I am so glad for your heart. Yes, we can have spiritual mothers and we can spiritually mother others - Romans 16:13 is a perfect example. I think it is good for single Christians to be open to either way of what God has to them, neither closed to the possibility of marriage nor focused on it. Singleness is a wonderful time to use for the glory of God, when familial obligations are not there. Nancy Demoss Wolgemuth is beautiful example of mothering many younger women, and she was single until her 50s I believe, so she had given up any expectation of marriage and served the Lord in her singleness for many many years.

    The Latin Poets - 'such a cute little book' - yeah, that looks like a Modern Library publication. I love that style too - the small print and economical binding were once very popular. Thank you for the review of this book. I disagree somewhat about running for school boards. Progressives have these boards because school board elections typically have extremely low turnout. No so any more in my county. A lot of parents are revolting hard after the damage that has been done to kids the last couple of years - and a couple of these Progressive Goofballs have lost their seats on the school board to people that are hopefully a bit more reasonable. I am an advocate of private tutors instead of school. My parents sent me to a private school with the horrible Christian ACE curriculum (aka rote memorization), and it took years to fix the damage.

  • @garlandofbooks4494
    @garlandofbooks4494 Жыл бұрын

    It will definitely always be better to have better people on school boards 👍🏼 But there’s a lot more to it than that, if that makes sense. I am not at all familiar with the ace curriculum 🤷🏼‍♀️. I never went to private Christian school, but had several friends who went to different ones where I grew up - and I wasn’t impressed :/. He talks about all that in the book, and how sadly many Christian schools copy the progressives model for school at the core, and just add a Bible class / make it a little more Christian. There’s so much more to be done than that.

    There are also teachers who take pledges to teach certain things no matter what school administrators or school boards or anyone says. They have an allegiance to certain doctrines above anything else, and they specifically aim to deceive parents as part of their indoctrination of students. They view parents as outsiders, obstacles, intruders, enemies.

  • @JosephFrancisBurton
    @JosephFrancisBurton Жыл бұрын

    @@garlandofbooks4494 - ACE = Accelerated Christian Education. It was definitely not based on a progressive model - they were a series of self-paced workbooks that relied on rote memorization. It was terrible. I graduated in 1981, so ACE may be a thing of the past.

    Sometimes. I have a hard time underlining or adding marginal notes in pretty hardcovers. So instead I will make stars in the margin or put in a sticky tab, or write page numbers in the back extra pages, and then I’ll write out my thoughts in a notebook, or good quotes in a commonplace book - I’m trying to build my memory of books with the discipline of writing after reading as much as possible. Books I consider information style I tend to underline and write in - modern nonfiction type usually.
