Re: knitting, I’m surprised it’s recommended this young. As a knitter myself, I’d guess their fine motor skills weren’t ready for something so small and intricate. So don’t feel bad that he wasn’t ready! Try again closer to 9-10 and I bet he’ll like it! It’s such a practical and versatile handicraft.

I just picked something to try! I didn’t really have a specific recommendation to start this young and I am not very crafty myself, haha. So, we are learning! Apparently some kids are able to do it younger, just depends on each child, so I don’t feel bad for trying, we will just try something else and surely come back to knitting later 😄

@@garlandofbooks4494 it’s a great way to talk about practical uses for math. Counting stitches and rows, learning about adapting patterns for different yarn weights and needle sizes, taking his own measurements and sizing a garment like a sweater or sock; the possibilities are endless

@@garlandofbooks4494 I use finger knitting instead when they are younger as mine LOVE it , they very much wanted to knit but got very frustrated as it was just too intricate.

Crochet is a much easier version to teach younger students! My daughter picked it up at 6 and is doing fantastic. I think it will be a natural and gradual transition to knitting later on.@@garlandofbooks4494

How did you manage to juggle it all?! I’m pulling from many resources this upcoming year as well. My biggest worry is making a schedule I can implement and follow lol! These are such amazing choices and really encouraging! I screen shot a lot lol

The schedule is vital. I can’t imagine someone being able to do it without a schedule! The schedule keeps me accountable to not making lessons to long for my child, and it helps me remember all the lessons. For example - picture study is just 1 lesson per week for 10 mins. Other than that, we just have a place to display the picture. But I could easily see how that focused lesson of studying the picture could be forgotten if you got stuck in just the subjects that are 4-5x / week. I used the scheduling cards from A Delectable Education, and put some time in on the front end to make it all fit for me, made some changes after the first week - but now I have a schedule that should work for me for 3 years, all of Form I for my one child. Then I’ll have to invest some time again to figure out adding a Form I student and a Form II student. Once you have that schedule, it makes all the difference though!

Each term I’ll be using an Arabella Buckley book for one of the 2, this time it was “Birds of the Air”. For my 2nd spot, I used Fall of the Year for a few chapters while it was fall, and then Winter when it became winter. It may sound weird to switch without finishing, but Charlotte Mason did not always necessarily finish books. The goal wasn’t to rush through a book to accomplish that book - the focus was on the time you did spend, and the relationships the child made with those portions 😊. Each of the chapters in these nature lore books is pretty stand-alone, too. So switching worked perfectly for us, and when we come back to them another time, we can pick up where we left off!

My daughter isnt 6 yet and we just started incorporating Charlotte Mason style (other than math and phonics we read living books) in our homeschooling. We're not following her style to a T so to speak. Anywhoo, question is how do you get your child to narrate??? I have to prompt my daughter a lot. And once she gets going she can keep narrating then she stops and I gotta prompt her again (like for example what happens after the frog jumped into the pond).

What was your French song? Frère Jacques? That's about a monk who sleeps in, not a little brother.

A Delectable Education has Teacher Helps that you can buy for not very much, and they have one that’s a recitations guide for all the forms. It has guidelines, examples, and suggestions that were used in Charlotte Mason’s schools.

@garlandofbooks4494 I've been thinking about getting a consultation from them. You're the only channel I've found that has shown any of their book recommendations. When you add your second child, will they both be studying the same time period? Or will they be completely separate?

@@michellecalais2482 we will do the same time period across all forms, that’s really something I love about ADE vs AO (lots of people in my area follow AO). I even read 2 family reads that included my student child and not quite student that were WWII books that they were both able to enjoy, while were doing the 1900s-present this year. It’s really enjoyable to all be following the same time period, including me! I’ve read a couple of books myself for this time period too. I’m also about to have my first consultation in anticipation of adding another student. I want to join as many subjects as possible. My children are between 2-3 years apart, so they’ll be in forms with each other sometimes, and not at other times.
