So, within a few years I predict that products will have ai dynamics that in many situations will do better dynamics than 90%+ what musicians could achieve with these types of controls, just using some basic commands that could easily be more descriptive than current music notation. It's becoming a fast moving target. The combination of more realistically modeled instruments with ai dynamics could be revolutionary in composing.

Should I set the pregain of every track -15db whenever I add tracks for gain stage? Is there any tips for doing that? Setting pregain of 'group tracks' or 'stereo out' -15db will be problem?

In some genres, when you make dynamic elements, people will come and tell you that this is wrong and then they'll try to "improve" the mix by putting everything at the same level. And when you try to explain that it's on purpose they will say that dynamics are only for classical music.

Hi Dom - thanks a lot for this great video. As always. I have a question about the contrôler you use. 2 questions actually 😊 1) why are you using this contrôler instead of a knob on your master keyboard (the one you use in the video doesn’t seem to have knob/controllers. So maybe that’s why). 2) what is this controller and for what would your recommend it if master keyboard already have some Thanks !

That said, all these VSTs are impossible to figure out with regards to where they save all this crap. There's "kits" and "with samples" and "instruments" and rarely when I save something can I ever find it again, and they do NOT show up in the hyper-confusing search tool. Steinberg really needs to fix their levels/searches.

Thanks for the video. I feel like this is like the last 10% of going from good to great, though. For example, Bach with dynamics sounds better than without, but Bach with no dynamics is still better than most of the modern pop I hear.

I'm Logic Pro user but I started on Cubase ions ago! After years on Logic, I have decided to return home to Cubase and your videos are a big reason for why I'm doing that. Do you have an affiliate link with Steinberg that I could use when I make my purchase?

Always great to hear that... "keep doing what you're doing". I really started focusing on instrumentation over the last year or so and these tips are all spot on, I actually get excited listening to my beats these days haha. Bought my first MIDI keyboard too, the humanization is everything.

Dear Don, your tutorial refers to Cubase 12. In Cu13 I couldnt find the option to create a group for channels and sent them to a common effect channel. Also the moving of the pointer through clicking alt + shift is not to be found or simply not possible? If you could do an update for Cu13 for best shortcuts and how to create/find them would be awesome! Greetings from Germany 😊

Very very good sound design, Dom! Since Yamaha came out with the Montage M, I keep thinking about getting the M8X version for myself. DAW integration with Cubase Pro is a huge thing for me, I'd like to control all VST's with the Workstation. Didn't have the best results with Nektar and AKAI controllers tbh. Does it work well with the Montage M?

i am not fan of analog gear for several reasons... but that's me.. this debate has started for years and years and in a serious talk everyone can have real points to show out in a conversation... in the end of the day, Analog gear or Plugins, they will deliver the job should anyway... the most important things are 1) the one using that gear, no matter what it is.. 2) when using something, knowing what you're doing, and most importantly know what to expect when applying something.. in other words working with intention...

Can you do each note to a different track though so it's not exactly the same it's too robotic sounding. Each track would mean individual expression like orchestra work

When acoustic instruments are recorded say on a live gig or in a basic studio, there can be unwanted sound reflection. Even if this doesn't upset the recording per se, it can fool the performer into thinking his notes last longer than they do. When a good directional mic is placed near the band, it will ignore the reflected sound which the artist is depending on, and sadly the artist may seem jerky and unmusical on the actual recording. Instruments like trumpets are particularly affected. If I know my trumpet sound is being recorded nearby, at a gig, I play extra legato/cantabile.
