Great review! I recently picked up an MBT and agree on all the same points that it’s a significant upgrade over the Fusion I’ve been using for a while (mostly for mixing). I don’t have the MBP but do have a Bus+ which is now paired with the MBT. If you get one, I think you’ll find that it works well with the MBT although there may then be a bit of overlap with the MBP. For me the fusion is almost certainly going to be sold. I do have a possible use for it in a “Live” setting but outside of this I can’t really think of any situations where it will get use over the MBT. If I feel I need more color options in the future than it would make sense to augment the MBT with a silver bullet,m rather than hanging onto a box that has so much overlap with another. Honestly though, the MBT pretty much nixed my GAS for more end of chain outboard.

Very good review. I had both but after a lot of recording, mixing and mastering I see myself always going back to the MBP for the depth, dynamics and the mojo it brings to the sound. For the stereo width I give that to the MBT but how much stereo width are you looking for 😊. I tried hard to keep the MBT but always going back to MBP 😊

12:04 - Do you have a video or can you create one where you elaborate on how you use the SFE on the Portico? Since you mention many people don't use it correctly, I'd love to learn about the Dom Sigalas method! Great video, I love my MBP. Don't have the money or space to add the MBT but it looks awesome and like it would be a great pair, especially to have a stereo EQ. One day! Totally agree about the power switch thing - on all the Neve units. I own the MBC and a Shelford channel. The MBP and MBC generate a lot of heat, and I don't really need them on all the time until the final sweetening of my mix, so I had to create a secondary power switch under my desk which is a little annoying lol.

hello, great video as always, a kind request to show us or if you have any videos showing how to mix and pan orchestra, i.e where to place violins, percussions, and the rest? need some help with this! do i leave it stock as the plug ins leave it or do i pan them all acordingly, i would also like to know the different sound stages, some composers position thier intruments differently, if a video has been done or could be done you showing us this would be great!

This is a great piece of gear. I've had it in my home studio for about 9 months. I've sold my 500 series rack. I started recording clean into my audio interface and just use this on the 2bus to get the final result. That said, the compression settings you're applying in this video are a bit much. If you're going to use the light to gauge compression, it needs to be pretty faint during most phrases, otherwise you're pulling down 7-12 db, which isn't what you want to do.

So much better than the SSL Fusion, seriously want this unit

Hi Dom, is there any chance you expand on the information regarding the MBP in the future? I think there’s to little info out there. Especially about the mid/side unlinked SFE section. Would be very nice to see how you use it on a regular basis. Enjoy your day.

Whether the Kiive plugin, or the box - it's hard to replace 4-5 mastering processors that cost 2000 to 8000 each (mastering EQ's, Compressors) with one $4000 unit... It's great for a mixing guy though who wants a bit of mastering excellence tools.

The one reason to dont sell the fusion is the option to use insert and use mid side is you use for example an eq stereo as mid side, for example if you get the maag eq mastering edition you can get a great combo

Hey Dom, I am confused - the output meter: When in bypass does the meter go dead and just not show the original audio passing thru to output untouched? Or is the level in so low it just isn’t registering + the additive gain from the processing is adding that much more voltage at output?? Personally, I think outboard processing, ya gotta crank knobs and ADD VOLTAGE to get the sweet spots of the gear in many cases, then just down the line back off the increased gain. But, if they chose that meter just goes dead - why? Also I have heard this MBT unit a few times, and never even on discount did I think it was amazing+++, maybe just amazing-avg… IDK.

They're different devices that do different things (e.g. the MBT has a compressor, whereas the Fusion does not). As great as the MBT sounds, I'm put off by the fixed attack time on the compressor and the boutique price tag. The Fusion is awesome at what it does, and when paired with other devices, it really shines. I don't think there's such thing as a "one-stop-shop" piece of hardware, and I prefer having multiple devices on my mixbus doing different things. For that, I prefer the Fusion. :)

The fusion does have a full compressor, not just a HF comp. You have to hold in the HF button for a few seconds then it kicks into full compression. Check out the manual and you'll see. It's pretty dope, have one sitting here in my studio.

On the fusion you have mid-side insert point. You can get a top eq like a curve bender and then your life will change forever... haha

True. But I honestly never use it. I have other ways to do M-S in the studio. And I think most people that get the Fusion don't even know what this is. But very good point- the MBT doesn't have that!

Hi Dom. Thanks for yet another great review. I was intrigued to hear how you’re using the MBT and had been hoping you’d do a review of the MBT because I knew you had the MBP and the Fusion. I’m pleased to hear you affirm the two units (MBT & MBP) compliment one another. That’s stared in the FAQs about the MBT on their website, but I was a bit skeptical because of so much functional overlap. I too have the Fusion and the MBP, and was on the fence about adding the MBT. I now think I’ll get one to pair with the MBP. I also have the BUS+, which I’ve paired with the Fusion. I’m thinking I’ll maintain the Neve and SSL device pairings, as I’m of the opinion that SSL sorta released the BUS + and the Fusion to compliment one another in the same manner as the Neve MBP & MBT. I’d love to see your review of the BUS+ paired with the Fusion if you acquire one prior to selling your Fusion.

I had the Fusion, thought it was ok. Sold it, bought the MBT and LOVE IT. Way better than the Fusion to my ears.

This is the case with all recent Rupert Neve Gear. Yes it looks worse than it actually is- having some of them for over 6 years I had zero issues. Sturdy and no crackling pots ;) I think they allow a bit of tolerance on purpose.

But SSL is used in many studios for mastering 🤔

the fusion is the box that amateurs get and start thinking they're mastering engineers. but you're not wrong, many project studios will use it to "master" their tracks, where you won't find many fusions is in an actual mastering house.

RND really missed the mark with the MBT. The modules are a bit redundant if you already have the MBP. A 4-band parametric EQ with lo and hi shelf filters with the two silk modules would have been a much better addition to the MBP. Lets be real, the MBT is a glorified version of the SSL Fusion. As for the Fusion... its hard to take SSL seriously any more. They were once the peak of audio and now with their consumer end products, its just disappointing to see how far they have fallen. The Fusion is a cheaply made, poor sounding unit with mostly unusable features. All of their budget friendly gear will end up on Reverb or eBay and sell for a fraction of the price.

Neve is dead man buy gear from manufacturers who are still alive thanks.
