Nice test Matt. After examining the 30, 40 and 50 yard patterns I had a thought. Look at each pattern and subtract the two widest pellets. Perhaps those were the two that were sitting on top of the stack. So you have a seven pellet group at each distance that is significantly smaller and well centered on the target. I was amazed by that. If you were hunting a deer or a hog, you would have seven pellets and whatever size that was that was much closer to a torso size shot.
I'd love to see you test the "Fetter" 00 buckshot (Putin Ammo!). Extra large 00 pellets at around 34 caliber and pattern surprisingly good for a unbuffered non shot cup load!
I'll see what I can find
Fiocchi buckshot 9 pellet buckshot test can do a test on it.
Fiocchi patterned poorly for me. Also, their "00" buckshot is actually closer to #1 buck / 30 cal in size than true 33 cal 00!
I'll see what I can find
The best birdshot pattern so far wow 🤩.
Yep, it definitely looks pretty impressive
I wish federal would offer black cloud without the Flitestopper pellets. Seems 100% normal steel round pellets would probably make the patterns better
Yeah, that would definitely be interesting to see if it would make a difference or not
At 25yrds, out of our issued Mossbergs these shells usually have some wild flyers. I'm sure with better chokes it does better. And yes this is the buck shot that we are issued. I have also been issued Winchester in the commerical looking red hull version as well.
Very interesting, I kinda thought that they might just be the same as the regular Winchester stuff
@@matttyreeoutdoors I think they might be a different spec, but mil will buy 'off the shelf equivalent' items if the actual spec stuff isn't available. But also the red hull shells were overseas so they might've been older stock that could've been bought by a different agency too. You never know where something came from sometimes.
In Afgan used these shells by US army in Benelli M4. Full choke is best for all type buckshot. Increase velocity and tight pattern. At 40 yard definitely kill man. At this Thaliban not have minimum helmet or armor.😂
Yeah, it definitely wouldn't feel too good for them
Forgot about that ammo.
I had never tested it before, so I had to pick some up to see what it could do
@@matttyreeoutdoors I think that’s probably the tightest I’ve ever seen double 00 buck hold at 30 yards.
Would look a lot better without that mysterious 9th pellet flyer. Now see if the "Buck Kicker" choke will do better. If you can test the Monarch from Academy which is the cheapest buckshot I can find ($13 for 25 round box) Grabbed some of it in 20ga #1 buck 9 pellet with a mod choke in the youth 500 it is crazy tight pattern! The 12ga 00 seems OK at best. Absolutely love your content.
We are definitely gonna try it through the Kicks as well. I'll have to see what I can come up with for those Monarch shells
Cool😎 Ive always wondered about these👍👊🦃
I have too, so I had to pick some up to test
I would say his , I was expecting that 50 yard spread at the 30 yard mark, I am with you nothing wrong with those for a 40 yard close in deer or hog shot. Pretty impressive, That 11-87 gets better looking every time I see it, gee I want one. Good job Matt you really have your professionalism lined up.
Thanks, it definitely has its dings and scratches in person, but it does look pretty good on camera I suppose
Glad the fly made it out of there HAHAHAHA As far as the shells go... I'd say get it if you can get a REALLY, REALLY good price on it for HD or deer at 30-35 yards and under. But it is not a $1 rd shell IMO.
Haha, yep, I'd agree with that!
Cykinder choke for home defense... Full for hunting. Good test. Edit: they use the same cushion wad as their rifled slugs. Interesting.
Yep, I'd probably do something similar
Loving your videos Matt! More buckshot testing please!
There's plenty more coming!
Great video!
Glad you enjoyed
@matttyreeoutdoors I've actually viewed several of your videos recently. I have and have always had a keen interest in the 410 shotgun. Terrific informative videos. Keep up the good work kid!
For those wondering, yes, the scope actually failed internally during that 2nd group. I have since swapped it out with another one and we are back to getting groups like the first one in this test!
Well I've got to get some of those shells
Like I mentioned in the video, unfortunately they are no longer available. You may get lucky and find some NOS ones, but that might not be the easiest thing to track down
@@matttyreeoutdoors okay and thank you
That is very impressive. I would say that is something they should put out again.
Yeah, I don't know why they discontinued them based on how they have performed for us
Check your scope mount. When your groups open up like that, something is often loose.
The scope actually failed internally during that second group. I have since swapped it out and we are back to seeing good groups
Wow, a great pattern. Almost unbelievable!!
Yeah, definitely pretty impressive!
Impressive.
Yep, definitely!
Great patterns. Thanks
Definitely looks pretty good!
Being a rabbit hunter, tht would be a great swamp rabbit combo.
Yep, it would definitely work pretty good for that
I've been hearing that we need to be subtracting 35 FPS when shooting bird shot over chronographs.
I definitely don't claim to be a chronograph expert, but I have never heard that anywhere. I don't know though, but it seems like it really wouldn't matter as long as the wad or any other bits weren't interfering with the chrono readings
Small pay load with high velocity. For quails best option.
1325 FPS isn't that high of velocity with steel shot, all things considered.
@@saltcreekammo Yes, Damage is low.
Yeah, that's what they were designed for, those smaller birds like dove and quail
Could you try the Winchester supreme hv 00 buckshot thru the momba tube
I do have some older Supreme HV 00 shells, so we can definitely test that combo here soon
Super impressive! I use size 7 of these shells and they have been great for me. Thanks Matt!
I have never tried any of the 7s, but this combo definitely looks pretty good
Yeah let's do the upland steal that sounds real good
After seeing this, I definitely want to test the Federals as well to see how they might compare
@@matttyreeoutdoors those Federal uplands are the ones I use to hunt doves
Thanks Matt I'm one of the guys that asked you to do it you did a fantastic job man
Thanks for the suggestion!
Will you be texting winchester supper x 1 1/8 or 1 1/4 oz bb shot?
I will definitely keep an eye out for some to pick up and test
That is pretty solid.
Yep, definitely not bad
00 buck patterns very well in an improved cylinder choke, for the most part I have found anything tighter to deform the pellets and cause the pattern to spread. Especially when using rounds with a shot cup instead of wads.
We have tried this shell as well as a few other similar loading through a wide range of chokes with similar results. I have pretty much always run buckshot through this full choke since it typically gives me the best patterns
I’ve noticed that the 20ga. LBXR doesn’t pattern nearly as well as the 12ga. LBXR . I can’t figure 🧐 out why though???
Yeah, they are definitely way less consistent
Definitely hit high in a lot of holes in that pattern
I tried several Carlson‘s back in the late 80s in the 90s. Price wise, they were the entry level, dollar store economy value of choke tubes. My factory tubes always pattern better than Carlson’s. I’m sure they’ve come a long way since then, but I still have a bad taste in my mouth from several of them that I bought and tried through the years. I definitely would try some other brand choke tubes. Kicks are my favorite for the money. If you don’t get an acceptable pattern, they’ll actually let you send it back in and they’ll swap you for another tube.
I can't speak for the older Carlson's chokes, but the ones I have tried have always done well as long as the shell was halfway decent
I had similar results with an 870 Rem and Truglo turkey choke. I got a better pattern with Rio Game load MGN 3" 1250fps 1 1/4 5 shot. There are only 17 bucks for 25 shells. They patterned better out of neighbors 870 to. With carlsons xr choke so I split up the box with him and went to the shop and bought another box of Rio's. I'll have enough for a while.
I'll have to see if I can track some of those down to test and see what I can get out of them
The double X 20 gauge shells seem to pattern better than the MODERN long beard shells. The old ones were money but now the double x in 20 gauge seem to do better
I definitely plan on getting some of the Double X shells to test soon, so we'll see how they do
Be a turkey hammer ⚒️⚒️
Yeah, it might even be a little bit excessive for a turkey being TSS 4s
I’m disappointed. Have you tried the Double X 5s through that choke?
I have not tried any of the 20ga Double Xs yet, but they are definitely on the list to pick up and test here soon, so we will see how they do
@@matttyreeoutdoors killed one this year with that exact setup. Looked great out to about 30 but didn’t look like much of a 40 yard pattern to me out of my 20ga 870
The last few years longbeard 20s have been terrible. They used to be amazing but not anymore.
I've heard that from several people unfortunately
At 20 it be baseball sized , thts 50-60 yard pattern all day.
Yep, I think you would run out of pellet energy before you would run out of pattern performance
Need to rename them long range rabbit 😅
Yeah, it would do fine for that
Totally agree. Been down this road with LB 20 GUAGE 5shot.
That pattern is horrible. The cheap Remingtons do better.
I keep watching your turkey patterning videos and got fired up and went to the range two days ago to test some 10 gauge 2 1/2 oz hand loads. Figured I’d try the 10”circle test. I slit my tuff wad shot cups in 4 different configurations to test. Tested my pattens at 45 yards with a pattern master .690 turkey tube. I had 159, 151, and a 142 hits in the 10 inch circles! The fourth load pressure had spiked and hit high and also backed out my primer. That one had shallow wad slits. All were using the same powder charge. Another great video!
I need to see if I can find something in 10ga that's pretty cheap so I can test some of those loads as well. I've been wanting a 10 and 28 for a long time, I just need to find the right deals I suppose
Yeah, it was definitely a bit disappointing
@@matttyreeoutdoors hand loads are key with 10 gauge. There aren’t a lot of factory ammo options anymore. Federal roll crimps their grand slams now so they are too long and won’t cycle in my gold. So Winchester #5 ‘s are about the only #5 load available. If you do you will want to reload. Unless your will to pay $15 or more a shell for custom ammo. Factory ammo is either 2 oz or 2 1/4 oz for lead offerings. I’ve loaded 2.5 oz and 3oz payloads. Imo 3 oz loads are a waste of shot. Most shot cups will be over filled and the patten blows out. The 2.5 oz load I posted about is about optimum imo. A 2.5 oz buffered load is pretty even with the top of a a BPI tough wad.
There's been a bad batch of long beard XR going around. I think you may have picked one up
Yeah, I've seen several cases of that recently with different variants of the LB shells. That might be the case here, but the 20ga 6s from a completely different batch and that came from a different state also have been pretty terrible, so the 20ga LB shells just seem to not have the quality control as of recent
Great test! Thanks.
Glad you enjoyed!
1187 premier is an overbore model, so the barrel is inhibiting the wad from functioning as designed. You're basically turning the load into a standard wad shell because the wad isn't flowing down the barrel smoothly, thats probably why you're getting better results with chokes. The FliteControl wad was specifically designed for straight cylinder bore barrels.
Well, that's not exactly true. First off, yes, Remington did make some 11-87 Premiers that were overbored slightly, but those were the "trap" and "target" models. Mine is not one of those. It has a factory 28" light contour field barrel that I have personally gauge pinned out to be a .727 bore diameter, so mine is not overbored or backbored in any way at all. Secondly, yes, the flite control wads were designed with tactical and defensive applications in mind that have little or no choke at all, and the shells do perform much better than a standard buckshot load would in those applications. However, based on this test, choking them down a little bit definitely does not hurt the pattern one bit
Thank you for the video! That's STUPID BULLSCHIT for how CCI/Blazer neglected to put such standard information on the box as the FPS of it
Yeah, I wish they put the basic info on the boxes. I had to go hunting for it when filming this test
It’s a shot gun still 🤣 “surprisingly good results” ofc I mean shit still throwing lead
I’d like to see that shot with#5 or #6 LBXR. I’d also like to see that setup shot W/ The Herter’s TSS Loads. I bet that would be POISON ☠️
Yep, we are definitely gonna test it with a bunch more loads, so we'll see how it does
No worries with that pattern. Im still hunting with my old Mossberg 835 i bought at Walmart 20+ years ago for a little over $200 Many a turkey r.i.p 🙏🦃
The old setups can still get it done just fine as long as you have a decent shell and keep yourself within the right ranges
I swear they need to come out with a 2-3/4 inch shell around 1.5 oz. Would be an awesome option for old guns that don’t have magnum chambers and also wouldn’t beat the crap out of you like the magnum loads do
Herter's does have the 2-3/4 1.5oz TSS load, but some older setups might not be able to handle TSS. I know there was once a Longbeard 2-3/4 1-1/4oz shell, but I don't know if they still make that version or not. I'll have to do some digging around and see if I can come up with something like that to test
