Winchester Longbeard XR 20ga 3" 1-1/4oz #5 Test W/ Stevens 301 20ga & Truglo Headbanger .565

Today we bring out some of the Winchester Longbeard XR 20ga 3" 1-1/4oz 5s and put them to the test at 40 yards through the Stevens 301 20ga and a Truglo Headbanger .565 choke. We definitely saw some interesting results from this combo, so stick around and see how it performs!

In an old 870 20 gauge I had, the 20 gauge #5 long beards with a black max turkey choke gave me the best lead turkey patterns I have ever seen in either a 12 or 20 gauge. It was nuts. If I still had the choke I would send it to you but sadly I dont.

I actually have a Blackmaxx .575 choke for this 301, so we can definitely test that combo to see if it works for me as well

Thanks for doing this one Matt. I have the 20 gauge LBXR choke designed to shoot these loads, and it’s a .568. Not far from what you tested today, but maybe you would fare better with something closer to .570. Just something to think about.

I do have the .570 Tight Wad, so we will definitely test them through it as well and see how they do

I changed to a 20 gauge this spring, but I never shot any lead out of it. I would like to see what they look like running through that BlackMaxx choke. I shot LBXR’s in my 12 gauge for years with wonderful results. I have heard and seen mixed reviews on the 20’s. But most of the negatives have been in the last few years. I am sticking with what I have, but I love seeing these tests.

I have also heard a lot of mixed things about the 20ga shells. We are definitely gonna test them with the Blackmaxx, so we'll see how they do

These loads from my 320 stevens does well with just a regular full choke

I definitely plan on trying them with more open chokes as well, so we'll see if that's what they like

The 20 gauge LB has been bad the last 3 years. When 5 years ago I was getting amazing patterns but the last couple years they have gone downhill

I have heard mixed things about the 20ga LB shells, so we will see what happens as we continue to test them I guess

My experience with 20ga longbeards #5s & #6s with multiple different chokes is terrible. On the flip side the 12ga has been excellent out of my Mossberg 500

I agree, I have not found any good 20ga combination with longbeards.

Well, we'll see what I can get out of them as we test them with different chokes
