Not Impressed! Winchester Longbeard XR 20ga 3" 1-1/4oz #5 Test W/ Stevens 301 & Carlson's LBXR .568

Today we bring out some of the Winchester Longbeard XR 20ga 3" 1-1/4oz 5s and put them to the test at 40 yards through the Stevens 301 20ga and a Carlson's Longbeard XR .568 choke. This combination definitely did not save these shells in this test, but stick around and see how it performs!

The double X 20 gauge shells seem to pattern better than the MODERN long beard shells. The old ones were money but now the double x in 20 gauge seem to do better

I definitely plan on getting some of the Double X shells to test soon, so we'll see how they do

I had similar results with an 870 Rem and Truglo turkey choke. I got a better pattern with Rio Game load MGN 3" 1250fps 1 1/4 5 shot. There are only 17 bucks for 25 shells. They patterned better out of neighbors 870 to. With carlsons xr choke so I split up the box with him and went to the shop and bought another box of Rio's. I'll have enough for a while.

I'll have to see if I can track some of those down to test and see what I can get out of them

I’ve noticed that the 20ga. LBXR doesn’t pattern nearly as well as the 12ga. LBXR . I can’t figure 🧐 out why though???

There's been a bad batch of long beard XR going around. I think you may have picked one up

Yeah, I've seen several cases of that recently with different variants of the LB shells. That might be the case here, but the 20ga 6s from a completely different batch and that came from a different state also have been pretty terrible, so the 20ga LB shells just seem to not have the quality control as of recent

I’m disappointed. Have you tried the Double X 5s through that choke?

I have not tried any of the 20ga Double Xs yet, but they are definitely on the list to pick up and test here soon, so we will see how they do

@@matttyreeoutdoors killed one this year with that exact setup. Looked great out to about 30 but didn’t look like much of a 40 yard pattern to me out of my 20ga 870

The last few years longbeard 20s have been terrible. They used to be amazing but not anymore.

I keep watching your turkey patterning videos and got fired up and went to the range two days ago to test some 10 gauge 2 1/2 oz hand loads. Figured I’d try the 10”circle test. I slit my tuff wad shot cups in 4 different configurations to test. Tested my pattens at 45 yards with a pattern master .690 turkey tube. I had 159, 151, and a 142 hits in the 10 inch circles! The fourth load pressure had spiked and hit high and also backed out my primer. That one had shallow wad slits. All were using the same powder charge. Another great video!

I need to see if I can find something in 10ga that's pretty cheap so I can test some of those loads as well. I've been wanting a 10 and 28 for a long time, I just need to find the right deals I suppose

@@matttyreeoutdoors hand loads are key with 10 gauge. There aren’t a lot of factory ammo options anymore. Federal roll crimps their grand slams now so they are too long and won’t cycle in my gold. So Winchester #5 ‘s are about the only #5 load available. If you do you will want to reload. Unless your will to pay $15 or more a shell for custom ammo. Factory ammo is either 2 oz or 2 1/4 oz for lead offerings. I’ve loaded 2.5 oz and 3oz payloads. Imo 3 oz loads are a waste of shot. Most shot cups will be over filled and the patten blows out. The 2.5 oz load I posted about is about optimum imo. A 2.5 oz buffered load is pretty even with the top of a a BPI tough wad.
