Hello fellow geeks! So glad to have you here. I'm Heather, a neurodivergent nerdy mom that picked up running in 2014. I was depressed and overweight, and sort of fell into running as a way to improve my health, both physical and mental. I'm not fast, but I love pushing myself and going on running adventures! Anything from 5K to 50K captures my attention, and I really enjoy setting goals for myself.
So on this channel, you'll see me train for new challenges, talk about the world of running, and geek out over some of my new info as I find it. Lace up and join us here in the Geek Den!

Thanks for the update, RGG! I'm really sorry to hear that you're still having hamstring troubles. I hope you get to the, um, "bottom" of that as you say.🤣It sounds like you've got plenty of other things to keep yourself occupied in the meantime, and I wouldn't think that the weather is any friendlier for running where you are than it is here in NC. My running mileage came up a bit short in June mostly because the conditions were so steamy and I had to slow it down a lot. But I ran for over 2000 minutes which I'll accept as a proxy for distance just this once, and generally it's going pretty well here. All the best for July!
Great job this month! It’s way too hot and humid to go for distance AND pace, so 2000 minutes is amazing! 🤓
@@RunningGeekGirl Thanks Heather! Yes, I got off to a slow start in June and tried to stretch out some of the runs to get back on track. But the longer I stayed out there the more I was affected by the steamy conditions and the slower I had to go, and I never could catch up. I'm trying not to let that happen again this month but boy oh boy, the forecast for the next week at least looks even more dire than June! You take care.
That's a great list of races, and all across the state! Every race should have Gritty as its mascot.😄I don't remember seeing you run a race in PA yet. Do you have one picked out?
I haven’t run there yet, but I’m looking at possibly doing the Philly Half sometime soon! 🤓
@@RunningGeekGirl That looks like a good one! And you could probably talk Suzie into joining you for it.
Keep up the great content. Super excited to hear what is going to happen in October. Starting my first full marathon training this month.
Thanks so much! Super excited about your marathon! Which one is it? 🤓
@@RunningGeekGirl Rock n Roll San Antonio
@@kafigueroa1 So cool! I’ve heard good things about that one. I think FairyTaleRunner runs that one too! 🤓
@@RunningGeekGirl yeah, she did. Gave me encouragement to try it therr 7 hour limit
First!
😁 😁😁
WoW! That’s Awesome! I Loved it! 🤩❤️✨
Thanks so much! 🤓
Glad I ran the LoveRun Half before this video… I would’ve had a hard time choosing one! Love this series!
Thanks! There are soooo many races to choose from in PA, but this one really looks fun! 🤓
Philadelphia Marathon is a GREAT race and so is the half. I like Philly Half more than Love Run.
There were so many cool races to look at! I was overwhelmed with the sheer number of races in PA throughout the year. 🤓
Watching this now. Excited to see what you picked in my home state

Love these!
Thanks so much! 🩷🤓
I can not see the amount of money on the screen ò my phone, how to show it?
That depends on the type of phone and what version of the app you're using. You'd need to get in touch with the app's creators at [email protected]
Great information RGG. It looked like that one of those birds was walking with a limp
Thanks! And I think it did have a limp, which is what made me slow down to watch it. I don’t often see limping birds, but they tend to take good care of the resident critters in this neighborhood. 🤓
Glad the Kayano’s are working for you!!! You might like the GT 2000 as well. Asics improved the grip in the Gel Nimbus 26!
So glad they fixed the grip problem-- it was really messing with me in the 25s because I have weird balance to begin with. I think I remember trying on the GT 2000 once, so I may have to give it another look! 🤓
LOVE THIS 😍!!! 💯
Great review! I might give this a try 🤔
Definitely keeping this in stock for overnight runs and camping! 🩷🤓
Congratulations on a smart and well-educated race, Heather! On a super muddy course with the humidity, no less 👏
It was a challenge, but I can’t wait to do this one again! 🤓
I always wanted to do Mt. Hood 50, and the Hood to Coast Relay looks fun too. Great list, thanks for researching and sharing it, Heather!
Thanks! Hood to Coast has been on my bucket list for a while! 🤓
RGG Fun Fact: The “Live Laugh Love” sign you see hanging up was given to me as a gift when I directed a show at a local theater. The cast all signed the back and I hung it up because it makes me smile, especially since a couple of those cast members are no longer around. I have memorabilia from quite a few shows I’ve done all over the house!
Nicely done, RGG! I always enjoy these videos.
Thanks so much! 🤓
I like number 3. I didn't know it was 100kcals/hr. 👌
Definitely explains why I’m hungry after a long run! 🤓
@@RunningGeekGirl By the way, there's a great paper from 2008 by Karen Steudel-Numbers and Cara Wall-Scheffler that goes way deep into this. They showed that the energy cost varies more than was believed and that the accepted rate of 100kcal/hr regardless of pace came from low-precision calorimetry in previous studies as well as too narrow a range of paces and test subjects. It's really well done and seems to me to explain a lot.
Three out of ten isn't bad...is it?
🤣Not bad at all!
So close to 1k 🎉🎉🎉🎉🎉🎉

Nice review. I used to wear Kayanos for years and years. Then I switched to Hoka and have surfed lots of different shoes ever since but have never went back to Asics. Maybe I should.
They’ve been working really well for me. I like having a lot of cushioning for long distances, since I’m not trying to be speedy. 🤓
Love this ❤❤❤❤❤
Love this!
You're doing better than I did! My last 33K trail race BROKE me. I'm only now getting back into running regularly, and the race was in April!
Congrats on getting back into it! To be fair, I’ve been trying to stay in half marathon shape for a while so I can drop one into my calendar as they come up. I do have an 11 mile trail run coming up in August that breaks me every year though! 🤓
@@RunningGeekGirl Same, generally. I ran two road half marathons and four trail half marathons (and beyond, 24K, 26K, etc.) in the past year. Maybe I shouldn't have worn plated trail shoes? I'm not sure. But either way, I'm recovering from plantar fasciitis now that took me out of commission for a while. It was probably longer than it would have been had I not spent the first month just waiting for it to go away on its own. 😂
@@RunningGeekGirl My first race on the docket for the coming season is an 11 mile trail run in August as well! Good luck!
@@joannemarkov Oooof, I hate PF. Hoping you’re healing well!
Good insights, Heather. I do love a maintenance week where you just get to chill on all activities.
Absolutely! I still like to have some structure, but no pressure, no pace, just moving! 🤓
As a precision fuel user, good to know that it what it says it is.
Definitely! I was glad to see so many other brands tested well. 🤓
What I do is to take complete rest. For how long it would depend on the length of the race I just finished.
That’s usually what I’ll do for marathon or longer for a few days. Then I’ll do a few days of walking before I start adding in run segments. 🤓
I find it unconscionable that SE doesn't hold itself accountable and deflects with "apologizing for the error" and that "some batches became diluted." WOW. They either didn't have a quality control process in manufacturing, or they did and were aware of the problems. Both are inexcusable. Unfortunately, nutritional supplements are not regulated by the FDA, and one of a few reasons I don't use them. Thanks for your series and shining a light on these issues.
Yeah, this goes WAY beyond an error in the cooking process. I’m seeing a lot more runners start looking into using real food for refueling since this all broke. 🤓
First of all, I love the new video editing and you look super refreshed!!! And it's a great idea to use chatGPT, I'm going to try that, just for the sake of trying new recipes or like you said, things you would have never thought of putting together. I just made a vegan chocolate mousse from chickpeas juice as suggested by KZread, I had no idea it could be done... Loved that video! Thank you!
Thanks so much! I’ve been learning some new editing techniques and trying them out occasionally. This experiment definitely gave me some new ideas and helped me rethink some of my old menu ideas. It’s not for everyone, but it helped me quite a bit! Thanks so much for watching! 🤓
This definitely changes my willingness to use this product both at aid stations and my own purchases
I know a lot of people were already turned off by the high price. I’m glad someone brought this out into the open though! I hate to think of how many people were under fueled as a result of using these. 🤓
I love it, RunningGeekGirl keeping 'em honest. Never tried Spring products. I'm pretty much a GU person. Good to see GU and all the others are pretty much spot on to what is on their label.
It’s been a roller coaster following this story! Glad to see it confirms that other companies are on the level! 🤓
Nice work Heather. Look like you got a little burned out there also. The sun was surely out for this one. Those are fun times for adults to run around in the woods all day playing in mud and water. Cool medal and nice swag.
We were super lucky that at least 95% of the course was in the woods! And that the rain decided to finally stop earlier that morning! 🤓
Very interesting! I've never used Spring Energy, as they were too expensive for me. Nice to see the other brands' labels are accurate.
I’ll admit, I was worried about now other gels would test, but it’s nice to see that they’re consistently testing well! 🤓
Great running! Congrats 🎉!
Thanks so much! Can’t wait to try this one again! 🤓
Another great update. Thanks, Heather. Yes, it sounds like they're in the deep stuff. It seems to be a small operation without a lot of resources--they're offering this as a defense--and one that depends on positive vibes to justify its high prices, which they've lost at this point. In any case, if their process control is actually that poor, they shouldn't be selling products for human consumption. But out and out fraud appears more likely.
I’m thinking it all started out close to what they promised, but then they tried to cut corners to simplify the process. Definitely not worth what they were charging, which was why I seldom restocked with Awesome Sauce. It’s going to be a long time for them to rebuild the public trust, if they can at all. 🤓
Thank you for presenting the results. That's really interesting! 👍
No problem! This has been fascinating to follow! 🤓
That is a real scandal! You presented the info in a really clear way thanks, Heather 👍🏻
Spring energy were too expensive to buy in the UK last time I checked so I've thankfully not missed out on any calories! 😅
They’re pretty pricey here as well! Sad to see that it wasn’t worth the price tag! 🤓
Yay! Congrats! Looked so fun!
Thanks so much! For as much as I was complaining, I really did have a good time! 🤣
Crushed it!! Great race and great recap, RGG, not just surviving to the finish but beating your goal time. Big congratulations!
Thanks so much! Hoping to do this one again next year! 🤓
Spring Energy sucks. Never again!!
It sounded like it was fun. The mud and water made more so.
Totally! It added a layer I wasn’t expecting, which made it so fun! 🤓
Kudos to you for grinding through all that mud Heather! 👏 That looked really tough underfoot. Legend. 😎🤘
Thanks! It was a bigger challenge than I anticipated, but so much fun! 🤓
Excellent and balanced summary of the SE issue. I have been following Jason Koop for years and listened to his podcast on SE. His expertise and credentials are unquestionable. 40-50% difference from carb and calorie values on product labels is not due to manufacturing process differences. SE submitting their own sample (maybe different than what's available) to a lab is not credible. Their email is a deflection. These companies haven't learned from the Tylenol public relations fiasco. And note that it's sponsored athletes like Sage Canaday and Ruth Croft are silent. Thank you, Heather.
It would have been a smart move on their part to just own up to the mistake, start issuing refunds, and fix it, but they doubled down and got more lab reports that still didn’t make any sense! I noticed people kept tagging Sage, but no response so far (which may be a smart move). Thanks for watching! 🤓
Not surprising a lot of words but not really anything but pushing off blame.
I can’t tell if they genuinely didn’t know or knew but didn’t think it was a big deal. Either way, it looks bad. 🤓
Very good review, thank you. Is it possible to create using the iPhone and view the times using the applw watch?
So far, I haven’t found a way to do that, since they haven’t added a watch integration. But I usually just use it in my headphones while I’m listening to podcasts. 🤓
That was a very wordy email with not much content from spring. The fact that they will modify, revise, innovate, and re-evaluate their products just means they were caught and now have to find a way to save their company from a huge class action lawsuit.
Very true. They still haven’t explained how the discrepancy happened in the first place, as these numbers don’t at all suggest normal variation in the cooking process. Either they knew and didn’t care or had no idea whatsoever, and I’m not sure which of those is worse. 🤓
Great work pushing though it despite all of those challenges, RGG! A goal for me the past few months has been to run 200 miles, but I was well off that pace a couple of weeks into May and had to grind pretty hard, working around vicious storms and warm, humid days here too. At 199.7 miles with a day to go, I'm cautiously optimistic.😁What I'm looking forward to in June is May being over. Have a fantastic race on Saturday!
I’m ready for this month to be over too! 🤣 Great job getting to that goal! You got this! 🤓
Sorry you were sick! I always think I’m too busy, then I watch your video & feel better about my schedule 😂 I’m looking forward to signing up for all the races because…. I’m not having meniscus surgery!! Have a great race on the 1st & excited for the recap 💪🏃🏽♀️
Yayyy! I’m so happy you don’t need surgery! Can’t wait for you to run all the races!! 🩷🤓
there is a special place in Hell for corporate executives who deliberately lie to consumers - the good news is I'm motivated to make my own carb fuel going forward...
I keep trying to give them the benefit of the doubt and just assume they didn’t know any better. Who can say at this point? At any rate, I know a lot of ultra runners who have much more success making their own fuel lately! 🤓
