    Great work young man on a great car. Good quality red oxide is excellent stuff as can be see on the original panels. Another good protective paint is Fosroc Galvafroid. It's a high zinc content cold galvanizing paint. It's heavy stuff, nice and toxic so we know it must be good and is best brush applied. None of this modern water based paint is any use at all. They go on about "saving the planet" then try to force us to buy crap which doesn't work!

    Little bit at a time is the only way on cars that far gone. Hope you have a blaster that knows what he is doing because most large panels I have either had blasted or seen blasted have warped to death. I fully understand the constraints though, blasting is the cheapest means to the end result because dipping is just so expensive and other solutions are ridiculously time consuming.

    I do the same to get heavy filler off - but I drag the door outside to do it as the stank is wodious, I was expecting that door to be much worse underneath - these rust for fun.

  • @bobfrankish8883
    @bobfrankish88834 ай бұрын

    Well done Fergus, another bit of donkey work out of the way. I find heat guns work quite well for the old filler. It's bit less dramatic than the torch! I wonder whether panel warpage with the torch and flames may possibly be another issue down the line? Maybe a re-skin may have to be the way to go in the end.

    That type of Filler usually consists of Polyester Resin and Chalk......and the Catalyst for it is rather Toxic when Burnt.. So outside with a Respirator on is very much a good Idea.

  • @jackweldingspecialist
    @jackweldingspecialist4 ай бұрын

    Yea thanks, a filter respirator was used, I've heard many stories about people getting ill and worse breathing in the old lead based paints ect on older cars

  • @cmg6848

    That isn't bad condition for a door on a mk2, the bottoms used to rot as they were a water trap ( I can't remember if they had drain holes). The front corners of the bonnet will probably be the same. One thing is for sure, if all the panels are like that it will weigh a lot less when you have finished!

  • @jackweldingspecialist

    You are getting there now. The wings are much better than i expected as they usually rot badly on the back edge and where the mud gets flung up behind the headlights. The sills can be a pain as they are three piece like the MGB i think it was. There is the inner, then a strengthener then the outer. People do get carried away when cutting them out and find once they have finished the doors don't fit. Mind you the door and sill alignment were never great.

    I owned a 1962 Consul 375 Lowline Convertible in the Early Seventies if one side of the Car were jacked up to change a Wheel the Doors would not open or shut!! it was an enjoyable car to own though..

    Yea the passenger side has already been replaced but there's now a 10mm gap at the bottom of the doors, yea I have all three inner panels. There are quite a few quick weld repairs so I'm hesitant to just cut stuff out. Well that's good to know about the doors, I'll get them as good as. I suppose that's just the character of the car 😅

    Bit of a mess Fergus. As you say, a really proper restoration is just not feasible time and money wise. All you can hope for is to get some metal back in and make it solid again. Can you obtain inner arch repair panels?

  • @jackweldingspecialist
    @jackweldingspecialist4 ай бұрын

    Yea definitely, not sure, I will probably have to fabricate a good amount of the inner sections

  • @cmg6848
    @cmg68484 ай бұрын

    Ex-pressed panels sell those inner housing as well as boot floor sections but as you say where do you stop especially when a budget is factored in to it. Considering the rot and filler on the outside there is a lot more of the inner left than I expected.

    4:03 ,,, ok Im lost now ,,, its not fitting so add filler strips , weld over red oxide and beat the crap out of the MIG torch, no guard on the grinder and rubber gloves then just beat it till the gap closes ,,,, and your the specialist ??

  • @jackweldingspecialist
    @jackweldingspecialist Жыл бұрын

    Hi Tom Thompson Yea, i could have done it better way, but sometimes panels get cut too short, mistakes happen, it would take a longer time to remove the floor pan, weld 5mm extra on to the panel, I also won't be able to paint inside the weld once its welded. I do that to remove the weld building up in the torch, I can alway replace it once its buggerd but doesn't damage the torch, if it did damage it then I wouldn't be wacking. Yea I should have had my leather gloves and the guard on, I will remove the the guard to get in to tighter areas sometimes. The end finish off the job the area will look really nice on top and have seam sealer applied to the top, to cover the minor imperfections which will then be covered in paint and carpet so won't be seen. My work may not be perfect but I do an honest job and get the end result to look right, thanks for your comments, I have taken notes. Sometimes the skill is shown when a job hasn't gone perfectly but when there are challenges but the end result is the same. Kind regards Fergus
