Ford Consul 1960 Restoration Part 13 - Removing filler from the drivers door before sandblasting

Автокөліктер мен көлік құралдары

Continuing to prep the doors and other panels for sand blasting.
Showing you a way of removing filler from a panel with a blow-torch.
Please be very careful and competent when attempting things like this, ideally do them outside with fire extinguishers close at hand or atleast a hose pipe.
Please follow along and leave comments if you have any questions or tips. I am grateful for any.

keep the edge of the scraper straight every now and then sharpen it to help stop gouges.

Well done Fergus, another bit of donkey work out of the way. I find heat guns work quite well for the old filler. It's bit less dramatic than the torch! I wonder whether panel warpage with the torch and flames may possibly be another issue down the line? Maybe a re-skin may have to be the way to go in the end.

I do the same to get heavy filler off - but I drag the door outside to do it as the stank is wodious, I was expecting that door to be much worse underneath - these rust for fun.

That type of Filler usually consists of Polyester Resin and Chalk......and the Catalyst for it is rather Toxic when Burnt.. So outside with a Respirator on is very much a good Idea.

Yea thanks, a filter respirator was used, I've heard many stories about people getting ill and worse breathing in the old lead based paints ect on older cars

That isn't bad condition for a door on a mk2, the bottoms used to rot as they were a water trap ( I can't remember if they had drain holes). The front corners of the bonnet will probably be the same. One thing is for sure, if all the panels are like that it will weigh a lot less when you have finished!

Ah right, yea 3 out of 4 of the doors are donor doors, the previous doors must have been awful, yea this is weight reduction 😅
