    Thanks for this video, interesting, I have a PR7 from 2021, I changed the clutch receiver with an Oberon as a preventive measure at 16200 km, there were no problems with the original one. At 28100 km, the original master cylinder failed, and I had to change the piston and seals (aliexpress kit), as the clutch had been acting up for a while. Since then, I've always a clutch master cylinder repair kit with me, just in case.

    All that time and research and you ended up with arguably the worst tyre for adv riding.

  • @markp87PR7
    @markp87PR75 ай бұрын

    It sounds like you have had a very different experience with the tyre to myself. What bike did you use them on and at what pressures? Tyre choice is defined by use, so we all have different parameters for our purchases. For me, cost effectiveness and road mileage were big pieces of the puzzle. If you trailer your bike to your off road riding area, then road use has no bearing on tyre choice. I however, usually prefer to ride not trailer my PR7 so those road miles count. I see comments about tyres that perform great off road and rubbish on road. They usually last 2-3k if you're lucky. I am currently at 12000kms on these tyres and they have taken me anywhere I want to go. My riding buddy prefers a more agressive tyre for his aggressive riding style. With roughly the same distance covered, he is already on his 3rd set of tyres. Most people write this tyre off due to the way it looks, that is their loss. The traction and clearance of the rear tyre in particular is phenominal and with the correct pressure settings, this tyre does everything I need it to. I expect to still be using these when my buddy is on his 5th set of tyres. 'Cash in the Bank'... thanks for your comment

    I had similar issues in the early days until I went out on a limb with trying what I saw as extreme changes to tyre pressures. Just for interest sake, I entered a bike weight of 230kg and a front/rear split of 40/60 (couldn't find a weight split reference). ( Too many guestimates here) for the 1290, My tyre calculator suggested 26lbs Front and 23.5 rear for speeds upto 110kph. ..17 front and 14.5lbs rear for mud.... and 34.5 front and 32lds rear for up to 150kph. TET use would be 20 front and 17lbs rear. Did you get this low on pressures in your explorations? As I said I am not a tyre engineer and we all have to seek our own pressures. The tyres were designed more for the 1290 than the PR7, they are a much wider spec than the AJP's. Thanks again for taking the time to comment, sorry the tyre didn't work out for you.

    Thank you James for your very kind words. I believe there is more than one option now, certainly for rear carriers like 3D Moto etc. Most PR7 riders are TET orientated and strap on bags are usually favoured. I developed the bike to be a great all rounder (watch 3 bikes, if you haven't already) and the pannier frames are a useful part of the concept. Back in 2019 it was hard to find PR7 information so I hoped that sharing my months of research would help make it easier. Suppliers and products change and indeed some of the items I linked to are no longer available. The good news is that more and more small manufactures are making great products now for the bike, so things are looking good for this great motorcycle. I'm a west country lad myself but do enjoy living here in central France. Thanks again for your comment and regards from Haute Vienne.

    An impressive well thought out presentation Mark, like your style. I'm coming up to making the same decision. My AT gets a bit intimidating at times for off road, especially here in New Zealands South Island. I added a CRF Rally 300 but ideally 40 to 50hp would be more realistic and under 150kg wet. I rode a mates well set up DR 400 enought to realise had I known, I would not have bought the 300. I spent big on suspension and and now am sitting in inbetween waiting to see what my options are. For me the perfect bike would be the ktm 500 or Husky 501 but because of plastic subframes and low service intervals and a starting price around $17000+nzd before I even start, the Kove looks bloody attractive. If they get compliance adr in Australia I'll go over and tour Aus and bring it back. Meantime its down to the Sth Island with my Honda 300 for a month in February.

The Kove does indeed look interesting, though I do wonder about the long distance road aspect, which is important to my all round utilisation. NZ is my dream destination and I hope to holiday there in the next few years. I know a couple of ex UK guys who live there and it would be good to see them again. • @markp87PR7
    @markp87PR77 ай бұрын

    I certainly have no regrets for purchasing my '21 PR7. Reliability is good, just a few things to watch out for.... Keep a check on expansion tank top, make sure it stays tight. Generally check bolts during these early days, particularly the engine guard. I would recommend a couple of well placed cable ties to secure it incase the single bolt works loose. I actually lost mine and unbelievably have no idea when it came of. My riding buddy had the manifold bolts work loose early on, so worth a check. Most importantly, make sure you waterproof all electrical connectors, especially the groups either side of the frame behind the radiators. They are in direct line of the front wheel water through off. Be precise with the rear brake adjustment, there is a fine line between a full pedal and brake binding with the subsequent over heating of pads and disc. If you maintain the bike I am sure it will meet or exceed your expectations. Thanks for the comment, hope you enjoy your new bike ;-)

    Mine is the US model. I don't have any emissions bs to mess with, but I do have to jump through a few hoops to make it road legal. The US version is off-road only due to some silly importation rules. That means it is exempt from emissions compliance. The US version comes standard with the Doma exhaust and high performance tune, but is missing the turn indicators and mirrors. In that configuration the engine has loads of power. The low and mid range is very strong. I haven't pushed it hard at high rpm, I'm still breaking it in. I love the suspension and handling off-road. As with my other bikes, I will change the oil much more frequently than the recommended intervals. With the high performance tune and lots of dirt riding, clean oil and filters are important. My main concern with reliability is mostly because of the race tune. I am impressed with the build quality of the chassis, and most of the components seem to be high spec stuff. Many riders of other bikes would pay several hundred dollars for an aftermarket saddle as good as the one that came stock on the PR7. I am pleased with my purchase. I definitely will grease all the electrical connectors, thank you for the suggestion. I am also looking at various options for luggage. None of my kit from my KLR will fit the PR7. Im looking at small to medium capacity rackless setups that are not ridiculously expensive. I think I have my rear bags picked out picked out, but I am looking for a small to medium tank bag that fits the PR7 well.

  • @markp87PR7
    @markp87PR76 ай бұрын

    Good to hear you are pleased with the bike. I change the oil every 2500kms which works well, I don't ride mine too hard though. I have spent several 8hr plus days in the saddle and it is pretty good. While riding with a group of riders last year.. all sporting custom or sheep skin saddle mods, they all started feeling the pain around the same time as I did, so I think it is easily good enough. I can't make any suggestions for a tank bag sorry, I went down the handlebar bag route which was sufficient for my needs. Good luck on your search and enjoy the ride :-)

    I would not consider mounting a camera on top of the helmet, too dangerous in event of a self inflicted crash or being taken out by some other vehicle. This was the reason that F1's Michael Schumacher is in the state he is today (the camera/mount going thro' his helmet on impact into his brain) As for quality with the 360, this video is one of the worst I've seen, nothing was crisp or sharp about it, might have been just wrong settings for the application. Best positioning I find is to have the 360 on an extended 'stick' as far back facing forwards or as far forward facing back, with Gopro on a chin mount, yes tall screens can get in the way but this also adds to the riders perspective giving the viewer more of a riding experience especially when standing up oor sitting down.

    I bought a new 2022 model in Nov last year. I rode it in Australia a few months ago. I covered 9500kms, with many serious off road tracks. I carried a Giant Loop , a dry bag with tent, sleeping bag, cooking pots, stove etc , weighing about 20 kilos, and a 6 l fuel bladder, so quite a heavy load all up. The suspension worked perfectly over all sorts of terrain, including many technical difficult tracks, gravel roads and sealed roads. No high speed work. The fuel economy is not great and the 17 litre tank doesn't cover the distances required in Australia. I am getting to grips with the Samsung tablet, and I like it. I am just now setting one up on my KTM 890 Adventure.

  • @markp87PR7

    Fuel economy is much lower off road in low gear work. I have got the claimed mileage on long road trips. I am considering changing the rear sprocket to a 38 tooth, as I feel I have plenty of scope to do that with the 1st gear ratio and it will improve long road section speeds and drop the engine revs. Hopefully it will improve mpg a little too. The PR7 does handle weight well, even with my dropped suspension. Having traveled around Australia as a child, I can understand the need for more miles in the tank :-) I only carry 1.5 ltrs as a local emergency supply, France can have a few gaps between stations too. Also tuck in 3ltrs more if covering distance. Thanks for the info, always good to hear the experience of others ;-)

Haven’t ridden with a chin mount on this bike yet, maybe I’ll try it later, but sitting will certainly be limited view. I get that on top gives you full access to 360, but I think most riders mount for 180-270 degrees of view, and just move the camera from time to time. (Or can afford 2 camera 😂). I use 3 cages mounted ready to swap the camera around the 3 positions. (can't afford 2 cameras :-) I love the ability with 360 to retrospectively go back and look at the ride from other angles, to see what I missed first time around. .... there is always compromise! ;-)

    What size lomo crash bar bags are they?

  • @markp87PR7

    At this time they were the Lomo medium panniers. I have recently swapped out to the actual crash bar bags but still use one medium on the rear. The specs are contained in my video kzread.info/dash/bejne/k4Stu7xmm7KslNI.html ... Lomo bags on the PR7, if you want to check it out :-) They are all good strong bags.

    The Trailmax Misson tire pressure detail is great. I'll keep that information in mind. For the street I'm keeping the front and rear over 33 psi which seems like a lot. I have a TPMS system on my bike and that shows the relationship between the tire temperature rise and the resulting pressure changes. I've read that the pressure is near optimum if a 10% pressure change is seen between starting cold and top temperature after 30 minutes of riding.

  • @markp87PR7
    @markp87PR7 Жыл бұрын

    Thank you for the comment. The Versys is comparable in weight to my PR7 and on my experience 33psi was a little to hard. Grip and comfort improved with some pressure reduction. If you haven't seen them yet, you might be interested in my exploration of what pressures to use. kzread.info/dash/bejne/kY6o286cpsbRg7A.html kzread.info/dash/bejne/eJ1t05luZ5i9qag.html In the second video(if you can stay awake ;-) around 5:36 I have a list of my preferred pressures. Tyre wear seems to be good and speed appears to be the guiding factor for me. Thanks again and ride safe!

    Thanks for the video! All I wouls say is that your long distance load is looking a tad too heavy. I ride a T7 and even for long trips I have scaled my luggage right down. Light is right ;)

  • @markp87PR7
    @markp87PR7 Жыл бұрын

    Yeah, the long distance set up is mainly for social trips like returning to see family in the UK for a couple of weeks. I drop the bags for trail riding when I'm there. I have used it for a TET run in Spain and it worked fine. I have developed a smaller pack for TET specific runs (see my TET pack video) and I have been able to purchase a lighter tent etc since making the video. Basic setup adds 20kg, TET adds another 7.5kg and the new long distance setup adds a further 5kg. It puts the bike weight at around 197kg fully loaded, which I believe is a shade lighter than the T7 ;-). There is a video in the pipeline to outline the latest setups due shortly, this will show the changes I've made based on the experience of the last 18 months. Having picked the bike up 5 times during a 3 day trip to the Auvergne, especially when they are upside down! I understand the impact of weight. As they say 'if you don't want to pick it up, don't fall off' :-) I am at a point where improving my riding skills will do more for me than lightening the load I think. Glad you enjoyed the video, I'm just trying to share information. Regards Mark P

    What a detailed video! What kind of gloves are those that you show at the end? I see that they are by Alpinestars. Also, I saw your video about one bike or two. Do you have a video about what led you to the AJPR7 bike over similar bikes? I would like to hear your process about that as well.

  • @markp87PR7
    @markp87PR7 Жыл бұрын

    Haven't got a video about the process sorry, however the key drivers for me were weight, reliability and customer service. In 2019 when I was finalising my decision, I was looking at the Husq 701 (which is the same as the KTM 690). At the time both models had major issues with rocker shafts breaking and side stand sensors. The forum posts on customer support were also not good, so that ruled them out for me. I understand that the newer 701 & 690s have had these issues resolved, though they need a lot more cash to match the PR7 standard fitments such as wind screen etc. The AJP may not have access to the vast range of accessories that the 690/701 do, but there are enough and options are growing all the time. The standard PR7 has less power than the KTM/Husq but it is more than enough. The 'power up' option lifts power output to roughly equal to the other two, so it's available if you feel you need it. Glad you are enjoying the videos, I do try to make them informative, it's the reason I started making them in the first place. I spent many hours looking for issues/accessories, so I wanted to give easy access to the information I had discovered. I can't find the glove model at the moment, they were not my first choice, but have been ok so far. Hope this helps ;-)

    I just happened to stumble on to this video and it was excellent! And unique in that it tackled the question of one vs two bikes. I am in the U.S. and I have never heard of that bike before. I assume it is not offered here. What would be the equivalent kind of bike available in the U.S. to take a look at? Can you update us on this bike and cost etc? And how are the highway miles, comfort and speed? What has been the greatest distance you have traveled on this bike in a day? How many miles have you put on this bike? Thanks

    Hi, the PR7 is available in the USA though initially it was for competition only I believe, though this may have changed? the bike is comfortable and good on the road able to cruise at 70mph. I have ridden 8-9hr days both on and off road without major discomfort. About 350miles in one day and around 1000miles over 3days is max so far having covered 6000miles to date. Links ... ajpmotos.com/pages/store-locator www.motoajpusa.com/ These guys should be able to help you with regard to price etc. Other bikes in the same range would be the KTM690 or Husqvana 701, also a new Aprilia 660 is fresh to market. Hope this helps you out. Thanks for the communication :-)

    I really am liking your piece on tyre pressure. Riding in wet with soft ground I've took advice from the old model t ford drivers that put a bit extra air in their skinny tyres so that they cut through the soft surface and could get a bite on the firmer hard pack underneath. Anyway I did try as they suggested and got good handling results. Thanks for the great video 👍

  • @markp87PR7

    Yes, I can see that working on the right terrain. Last time out, in the Auvergne, we hit a few muddy rock strewn tracks, so you needed to drop the pressure to improve travel and traction through and around the rocks, else you were bounced and slid all over. With the TrailMax on the PR7, getting the edge to bite on the front was my biggest issue and I happier with the performance now. Thanks for taking the time to comment and happy trails. :-)

    Mark, I understand from one of your vids that you were looking at upgrading the headlights on the PR7. The existing lights are rubbish to be fair. I went for the LEDs from Adventure Men Cave. I'm very pleased with the them. Not too expensive, but much better light, half the weight and 1/4 of the volume of the originals.

    Thank you for that Gary. I am aware of the AMC lights and it is always good to get confirmation of products from actual users. I agree, the standard lights are limited and need replacing or supplementing if you do lots of night riding. I've not made a decision yet but hoping to upgrade at some stage this year, so thanks again for the info ;-)

    Hi Mark. Very detailed review of the tyres, Thanks. I'm using Mitas EO7s at the moment, and seem OK so far. Very pleased with the PR7 in general though. No long trips on it yet, but should get some time in next year. That looked a nice run you did in Spain!. We did the Portugal ACT this year, that would be great on the PR7. I might have to do it again😁

  • @markp87PR7

    Thank you Gary, there are a lot of closed minds out there with regard to tyres. The rear has incredible grip for what looks like a road tyre. Never once on any surface have I felt a lack of grip. The Spanish trip proved their worth, lots off road and lots on road. Mr Newman rides harder than me, but he has worn out a set of Desert Race 1500kms and a set of TKC 80s 5000kms during this time. He rode my bike out of trouble twice on the Auvergne trip and admitted that the tyre definitely has traction. I feel, if Dunlop work on the front tyre edge grip, they could have developed the perfect 50/50.... especially if I can improve my riding ability too :-) Glad you're enjoying the PR7 as much as I am, stay safe.

    I am very happy with my PR7👍👍 But yes, a few things to sort. Lights are rubbish, so upgraded to LEDs. Much better. The fuel guage is next to useless. Also fitted crash bars like yours, and big heavy duty radiator guards. I use the bike for rallies and for racing on gravel roads. I am a short arse, but have learnt to manage that. The bike always brings out the hooligan in me, which is great for an old guy like me🤣🤣 Good info on the luggage, thanks.

  • @markp87PR7

    Yes! All things considered, it is not a bad bike. It only needs a few upgrades as apposed to others that must be updated to function properly. When you look at the structure around the radiators, the crash bars are a must I feel. I only started making the videos to pull together all my research and make the information available to others. A couple of years ago, it was hard to find all the options. Glad you're enjoying yours and I appreciate the comment, thanks! :-)

    Thank you for the comment. The method looks fairly solid, it will be interesting to see what others find with their own bikes/tires calculations. I am certain that tyre manufacturers have these design models. It would be great if we could access and extract pressure settings straight off their websites for our own setups. Looking at the variance in tyre and bike manufacturers spec's, they seem fairly rigid and not that informative. Let's hope we can stimulate some change. ;-)

    genay-racing.fr/boutique/index.php?id_product=44&id_product_attribute=0&rewrite=ajp-motos-pr7-moto-650-adventure-rallye-raid-enduro&controller=product. There is a price for the standard model and an additional option for the power up version which increases the bhp, this adds around 14-1500 euros? to the base price. I bought the standard version which is quieter and I have never found it lacking power in any situation.
