8500kms on the 2021 AJP PR7 & TrailMax Mission Tyres, so what about Pressures?

So far I have ridden parts of the Spanish and French TET. Done 1000’s of kilometers across Europe on road trips, as well as many more on my local roads and Chemins in France. The difference relatively small changes to the tyre pressures make to the performance, is both surprising and welcomed. This video is about my real world experiences during the first 8500kms with the tyres , focusing on a trip on the Spanish TET in May 2022.

    Hi Mark. Very detailed review of the tyres, Thanks. I'm using Mitas EO7s at the moment, and seem OK so far. Very pleased with the PR7 in general though. No long trips on it yet, but should get some time in next year. That looked a nice run you did in Spain!. We did the Portugal ACT this year, that would be great on the PR7. I might have to do it again😁

    Thank you Gary, there are a lot of closed minds out there with regard to tyres. The rear has incredible grip for what looks like a road tyre. Never once on any surface have I felt a lack of grip. The Spanish trip proved their worth, lots off road and lots on road. Mr Newman rides harder than me, but he has worn out a set of Desert Race 1500kms and a set of TKC 80s 5000kms during this time. He rode my bike out of trouble twice on the Auvergne trip and admitted that the tyre definitely has traction. I feel, if Dunlop work on the front tyre edge grip, they could have developed the perfect 50/50.... especially if I can improve my riding ability too :-) Glad you're enjoying the PR7 as much as I am, stay safe.

    Mark, I understand from one of your vids that you were looking at upgrading the headlights on the PR7. The existing lights are rubbish to be fair. I went for the LEDs from Adventure Men Cave. I'm very pleased with the them. Not too expensive, but much better light, half the weight and 1/4 of the volume of the originals.

    Thank you for that Gary. I am aware of the AMC lights and it is always good to get confirmation of products from actual users. I agree, the standard lights are limited and need replacing or supplementing if you do lots of night riding. I've not made a decision yet but hoping to upgrade at some stage this year, so thanks again for the info ;-)

    Thanks for the praise :-) It's hard to either convey information or summarise a trip without it becoming very boring very quickly. Glad you enjoyed it! Hopefully, either the Tyre info or views of Spain will help or inspire someone somewhere. ;-)

    I really am liking your piece on tyre pressure. Riding in wet with soft ground I've took advice from the old model t ford drivers that put a bit extra air in their skinny tyres so that they cut through the soft surface and could get a bite on the firmer hard pack underneath. Anyway I did try as they suggested and got good handling results. Thanks for the great video 👍

    Yes, I can see that working on the right terrain. Last time out, in the Auvergne, we hit a few muddy rock strewn tracks, so you needed to drop the pressure to improve travel and traction through and around the rocks, else you were bounced and slid all over. With the TrailMax on the PR7, getting the edge to bite on the front was my biggest issue and I happier with the performance now. Thanks for taking the time to comment and happy trails. :-)

    The Trailmax Misson tire pressure detail is great. I'll keep that information in mind. For the street I'm keeping the front and rear over 33 psi which seems like a lot. I have a TPMS system on my bike and that shows the relationship between the tire temperature rise and the resulting pressure changes. I've read that the pressure is near optimum if a 10% pressure change is seen between starting cold and top temperature after 30 minutes of riding.

    Thank you for the comment. The Versys is comparable in weight to my PR7 and on my experience 33psi was a little to hard. Grip and comfort improved with some pressure reduction.     Hi Mark I see you have the same style fairing extender as I have. I can highly reccomend to angle it horizontally rather than vertical as you have in the video. For me it transformed the bike from noisy and buffeting at high speeds to a smooth ride at all speeds. :-)

    How did you find the Doma silencer. I've put the standard silencer on after a six hour back lanes ride and my tinnitus is bad for a few days even with fitted ear plugs, We will be doing the Pyrenees in September and I think its just going to be way too loud.

    Doma is fitted to Richards bike. They are loud, I can hear him coming up the trail behind me over my engine noise. I am happy with the standard set up, no lack of power in any situation I have yet come across, but I'm no speed merchant. Richard enjoys the extra power though he is a more competent and experienced rider than me. ;-)

    @@markp87PR7 I'm thinking a lot of the noise is induction roar as well so I'm trying to find some thin foam with sticky backing to muffle the inside of the airbox. It needs to be something that wont fall apart and end up in the engine though

    ​@@christommo May be an outer covering, like a tank bag, might be more effective. There is a good deal of roar that comes at you from that air intake 🙂

    What a detailed video! What kind of gloves are those that you show at the end? I see that they are by Alpinestars. Also, I saw your video about one bike or two. Do you have a video about what led you to the AJPR7 bike over similar bikes? I would like to hear your process about that as well.

    Haven't got a video about the process sorry, however the key drivers for me were weight, reliability and customer service. In 2019 when I was finalising my decision, I was looking at the Husq 701 (which is the same as the KTM 690). At the time both models had major issues with rocker shafts breaking and side stand sensors. The forum posts on customer support were also not good, so that ruled them out for me. I understand that the newer 701 & 690s have had these issues resolved, though they need a lot more cash to match the PR7 standard fitments such as wind screen etc. The AJP may not have access to the vast range of accessories that the 690/701 do, but there are enough and options are growing all the time. The standard PR7 has less power than the KTM/Husq but it is more than enough. The 'power up' option lifts power output to roughly equal to the other two, so it's available if you feel you need it. Glad you are enjoying the videos, I do try to make them informative, it's the reason I started making them in the first place. I spent many hours looking for issues/accessories, so I wanted to give easy access to the information I had discovered. I can't find the glove model at the moment, they were not my first choice, but have been ok so far. Hope this helps ;-)
