My husband and I plan to retire to France in 2 years. I know we could get a retirement visa, but I have been a costume designer (theater, film and television) for 46 years. The last 18 years have been private clients and theater. I work for a private school in Los Angeles as the staff costumer. While we are retiring, I know for a fact that as soon as word gets around that I am a costume designer, I will get calls from people asking if I could make them a costume or assist in a production. Besides after such a long time, I doubt my move to France would be successful if I just stopped doing what I love. I am not sure what visa I should be applying for. I think the retirement visa might be easy, but I don't think I could accept work (and most work in theater is freelance). I am definitely an artist, I design and build, but I'm not sure how it is viewed in France. I want to choose the visa that gives me the most flexibility. I would be setting up a studio in my home (when we buy one) as I have here in Los Angeles. Help!
Omg that's me!!!
Hi. Thank you for posting this video. Very informative. I currently run a walking tour in the UK and I am interested in branching out to Paris to offer a tour there. Very much like yourself, I will not be getting the licence to enter buildings etc. It will be a full outdoor walking tour. Can you possibly guide me in the direction of any websites/links that contains all legal requirements to run this. My apologies if this is not the correct platform to ask this but thank you for your time.
@PG-hy1hd yes indeed this is pretty similar, so it's nice to get someone's feedback. you can look at this official site on guides www.entreprises.gouv.fr/fr/tourisme/conseils-strategie/foire-aux-questions-metiers-du-guidage . For the business, I recommend going for a micro entrepreneur. From the UK, you will also need a business visa. I would recommend a visa Profession Liberale.
@@StartBusFrance Thank you so much for the quick response. I will look into this. Best wishes. Peter
Good evening Madam, this video was very useful. Thank you a lot. I was wondering what is the process to acquire a CPF for Mauritian Nationals who wish to work Freelance for France. Thanks for your help
I'm not sure to be understanding your question, would you mind clarifying? CPF compte professionel formation is topped up when you work as am employee in France or make contributions via your business.
@@StartBusFrance My apologies not CPF but SIRET number.. my bad
@@bbdamur17 Ile Maurice / Mautitius is part of France, so as a national you can register a business visa INPI.
@@StartBusFrance Actually Mauritius is a republic and not a part of France. I was hoping you could actually help me with the steps and documents needed to do it. I am going to Reunion island in a few days.
In that case I 'm afraid that you need to apply for a business visa such as visa profession liberale from home. Prepare a business & financial plan and apply via France Visa
Hello! Hope you are doing good, I have a doubt like how to cancel the siret number when its not in use.I recently worked in a warehouse and the siret number is created from there. After resigning from the warehouse do i need to cancel the siret number used for working in that firm.?
@edwincredible I'm not sure to understand your situation. Getting a SIRET number means registering a business. Therefore stopping means closing it down with INPI. Just in case: you shouldn't be pushed into creating a business by an employer, there should hire you with a work contract.
J’adore ! Merci, Valerie et Alex
Pleased you enjoyed it. What is the thing that you find helped to improve your French the most?
@@StartBusFrance Alex is my coach and I completely agree with his four pillars. Naturally having (or training oneself to have) a positive mindset makes one so much more receptive to learning. Taking accountability for creating opportunities, creating routine is also key. In traditional learning settings quite understandably there is so much focus on speaking; as a counterbalance, it has been valuable in my own progress to put as much focus on listening comprehension. Working with Alex has really helped me be more analytical about how as adults we can foster language acquisition in ourselves. My French language experience as a result is largely joyful and satisfying as well as ongoing.
@@annemoss-ks6yc Great to hear your feedback and the importance of listening and French routines. I can see that many people put themselves under so much pressure to speak, where there might be easier milestones to reach... and notice as Alex explained!
Merci beaucoup Valerie. A bit surreal for me to do this interview with years after finding myself in your forum while drowning in French administration!
C'était avec grand plaisir Alex. It's great to see for future expats that very quickly they'll be focusing on the business development and not the French admin.

If during the business registration process with INPI one selected details to be private, is it possible to download your own KBIS? On all the open platforms it shows as details not being available due to privacy settings. However is there some where the owner can login to get their details?
@PYPR_ I'm afraid that in this situation you have to contact INSEE direct, prove your ID and they will issue an Attestation de Situation INSEE

Hi. I'm a fashion design graduate and I wanna apply as a fashion Illustrator and designer and I've been working as a freelancer from last 2 years. What visa I can apply. I filled application with entrepreneur professional Liberále visa. Is it a correct one or not.
Maybe a daft question, but can you start the application process once you have signed the purchase documents on a property, or do you have to wait until you actually have completed purchase?
@stephensmith277 definitely not a daft question! If your business project is based on your property (gites, retreats, etc), wait until you actually own the property. The Embassy will say no if there is a risk that the sale falls through.

Hello Madam I want to start a restaurant in france
@ashishmehta007 restaurants aren't the easiest projects to start and you definitely need to already be in France with the right visa (visa profession libérale, visa vie privee et famille).
Hello! Thank you for this insightful video! I am planning to move to France soon. I plan on Teaching English and real estate photography. Can I do both under a micro-entrepreneur visa? Any feedback is appreciated :)
@aaronzavala7252 yes you can do both under a micro entrepreneur, with a primary and secondary activity. Decide which one will be the main one as it will impact on the body you relate to. Photography relates to Chambre de Metiers. It's not regulated, but if it comes first there will be more documents to supply when you do register the business;.
@@StartBusFrance good to know! And do you register as micro entrepreneur before going to France? Or come to France first? Do you have to have clients already established in order to convince the consulate? Forgive my ignorance, I’m new to this whole process 😅
@@aaronzavala7252 you only register the business one you are in France, since you need your visa for this step. Best to have past clients you can take over or potential new ones.
@@StartBusFrance ah I see. Thus the need to have the “entrepreneur/profession liberals” visa before hand. One last question - what if you’re doing remote work with a company based in the US? Can you continue that to support yourself under this visa?
@@aaronzavala7252 officially you are either on a business visa and create your ME. Or a visitor working remotely, but this is a bit of a grey area and I'm not comfortable with this option.

@ruimartins8601 there is no VAT until you reach 36,800€/year. Above that you will need to request your VAT number, but this is B2B services, it will be reverse-charge (i.e no VAT charged and up to your customer to clear it in Portugal).

Bonjour, It is my first year in France. Whom should I name the recipient when sending Tax return form 2042 via La Poste?
@f.a.4077 the tax form is posted to Service Impôts Particuliers (SIP).
Beautiful cat
This is a useful video - I am wondering though if the interface has changed in 2024 as I could not see an option to keep information the same, we have owned our holiday home for 14.5 years - I just added a week when we visited in February and think that would be sufficient - we have always pays TH as the house is fully furnished but we only visit a few times a year - better to be honest 🙂
@TenaciousP yes, the declaration interface has changed slightly and it is now fully integrated in your personal Impots Account. You are informed to update it when you feel your personal income tax form (extra tab for the properties) . Unfortunately, if you are a non-resident you will still pay Taxe d'Habitation.
I buy those square pillows and pillow cases to bring to the U.S. 😂. It’s expensive I. The US $40 for a SQUARE pillow case. No idea why it seems like the standard in Europe but it’s advantageous for me lol

Bonjour, this video was great, thank you! I do have a question; do you need the Numero d' Identification Fiscal, aka (TIN Number) prior to filling your fist paper return? Or is it assigned to you after its filed? FYI, not sure if it matters but I am an entrepreneur liberal .... thanks!
Bonjour @efullilove-thigpen5726 you don't need this number when you file your 1st paper declaration. Leave it blank and they will create one for you.
What is my husband is an Irish eu citizen and we are buying a house with an additional house to renovate to become a holiday let…
Not sure what your question is? He could run this as a micro entrepreneur as he is Irish.
Really useful thanks Valerie, one question when declaring income on the Impots website therefore, as a micro entrepreneur should you only input 66% of your income or you input everything and they calculate the 66%? I fear I have declared too much income over the last two years.
Good question. You have to enter your whole turnover. Impôts apply the rebate in their calculation, not you.
Can you do clip that focuses on foreigners who've retired in France and are living off of their personal savings, rental income in their own country and social security? Also, if you sell your home in your country of origin, you obviously pay capital gains tax in your country of origin. Are you simply required to declare this transaction on a French tax return but not pay any taxes on that income?
I'm afraid that my channel only focus on freelancers. It's best to speak to an accountant for the capital gain. If you are already paying capital gain, there should be a tax credit.

Amazing Video like always. 🙏 I have one question concerning the Micro Entrepreneur calculation. If he has a turnover of 30.000, then the taxable income is 19.800, but when I look in the tax table you showed and want to calculate the tax, isn't it like this: For the first 11.294 it's 0 and then for 19.800 minus 11.294 it's 11%, so at the the end a tax of around 935 (which is 11% of 8506). Or am I understanding something wrong?
@marina_monaco yes, your calculation is correct. The Boursobank simulator seems to be giving a lower level of taxes, but they may apply extra rules (for instance a boost for someone getting back to work by creating a business). In the 1st example that I take the single person had a net income of 32,000€, so the calculation is different.
@@StartBusFrance Thanks a lot 😊 now I understand
Hy...so nice
Hi Valerie, this is excellent guidance thank you so much! What category would ‘calligrapher’ fall under…artisan, commercial or liberal? I offer Calligraphy for weddings and events. Live calligraphy for personalising items at events and I also teach calligraphy workshops.
@stephanandsandra this is a tricky one! Design in general tends to be profession libérale, but calligraphy entails a manual activity. If you describe it as "Graphiste, calligraphie, ateliers et course de calligraphie" you should be profession liberale.
@@StartBusFrance thank you so much!!
Bonjour, Valerie! Thank you very much for this video. It's super helpful! However I would like to ask you as a software developer, planing to earn money by publishing mobile applications and selling subscriptions.. would that work well for a micro entrepreneur and what régime this activity would fall into. Also I would like to try to sell some POD (print on demand) products on Etsy. Can I do this with the same micro entrepreneur account? What régime this activity would fall into?
Bonjour @alexivanova0509 selling apps online or digital products are seen as professional libérale, as there is no physical product. I would describe it as "vente en ligne d'applications pour portables". The POD is different because this time it's a physical product, related to photography . You could register both as a micro entrepreneur to start with. And I would describe 2 activities: "activé principale" the apps and "activité secondaire" the POD. You register both under the same business.
Thank you for your advice 🙏 And for the POD should I register it as “activité commerciale” since I only produce a design but the customer does get a physical product?
HI, thanks for the video. Could you please clarify if it is the good option if im doing my blog in social media and have contracts for the ads in my blog? Thank you again!

Hi! This video was very good timing, I received the email about it last night because I'm signed up to your newsletter. And VERY early this morning around 5AM I had a video call with about 7 people in France helping me pick from my top 2 locations. It was a great talk, but I'm also VERY embarrassed with my speaking ability after 1100 days of duolingo French. So I'm looking forward to classes immediately when I arrive. But I'm so thankful for youtube, so that I can listen to French language content and read the French subtitles because my reading comprehension is better than my listening. And also TV5Monde has tons of lessons, news and entertainment to learn from. Lots of great info in this video, and people need to know that time disappears on this journey. But if you're considering the move-keep your spirits up and don't lose your motivation! On my call today September was proposed (and I want a sooner time), but even with that amount of time, so many arrangements need to happen! And Valerie I look forward to arranging a business strategy with you once my most basic moving plans are stable. Thanks.
@slrdave6308 nice to hear that the timing was right. TV5Monde is a great idea!
Hello, do the visa requirements apply to EU citizens that are moving to France?
@@harrietwebb1375 Hi. I don't know much about this, but it's my understanding that EU people have "free movement" throughout the EU and some kind of "right to work." So I'm sure you can ask some place like the French consulate about coming. They can clarify the procedure. But I think I read, as an EU citizen, you have free entry, but if you plan on staying longer than 3 months you just need to register with the local municipality to let them know your intentions.
Thank you, Valérie! Very easy to understand explanation.
@CsillaPataki please to hear it was clear enough. Big topic!
Thank you for the video, it is very helpful. I have two questions. When you talk about turnover / sales (les ventes, le chiffre d'affaires, les recettes) you made the distinction with 'reettes encaissées' as being money actually received. I know from your other videos that for a micro entrepreneur you only declare money actually received, so not invoices issues and not yet paid. So when you use the terms 'les ventes, le chiffre d'affaires, les recettes' does it always mean 'money actually received'? Or does it include invoices issued and not yet paid and you need to specify 'encaissées' to differentiate? My second question is on your point at the end about 'le revenu' being seen as a fixed percentage of your sales if you are a micro entrepreneur. Does this mean you are expected to take out that percentage as income in a year? Or that you can only take out that percentage in a year? Or does it not matter what you take out of the business in a year?
@EB-bn7zm well done for your level of French, this is advanced vocabulary, which I didn't include. Yes, each time I refer to recettes, chiffre d'affaires or ventes, it means CASHED IN sales or "recettes encaissées". Thank you for this great contribution.
Thank you for this - really helpful
Glad it was helpful!
