SHAME. SHAME on those misogynist mongers that ask a screentest to maybe the biggest ICON of her Era. Someone who surpassed the screen to become a sociological phenomenon, a sort of Cult in the States and all around the World. Garbo was extremely humble in accepting this short of humiliation. What was going on in that Insustry after the War? Even Frank Capra was not considered any more to keep on going with his previously successful career. Actress after her 30's and not neccesary to say after her 40's in that Hollywood suffered a disease called "Invisibility" Something that still persist in some or other way to the present day. Specially for those actress smart enough and with self-esteem enough to refuse undergo any kind of procedure to hide aging and freeze their facial expression skills. Too bad for that Industry. What a pity for all of us. Ingrid Bergman made her choice and returned to Europe to keep on going with her Acting career far away of those sionist mongers. Garbo decided that enough is enough and choose a private, never secretive, life in at the time probably the capital of The World (now a rubbish bin) Let's just keep in our hearts her wonderful out of this World Acting and On Set Presence. Her magic in front of the camera for films or stills. Let me say that I belong to a very distant generation that never witnessed that Era with Chaplin, Keaton (Buster), Pickford, Swanson, Erich von Stroheim, and so many more that took what was just a fairground attraction and made out of it a New Form of Art building its grammar and vocabulary. A Language that maybe some other BIG names kept developing for a few years more, Hitchcock, Orson Welles, Brando, Newman, Taylor (Liz), etc. But since 1960 the the flow fade and fade and fade with less and less rare pearls appearing once in a while (Blade Runner, 1982. The Shawshank Redemption, 1994. The Dark Knight, 2008. Yes, The Dark Knigh. Because Genre no matters. TALENT AND EXCELENCE does.) to this very present day that Film Industry is not any more the main attraction for a looong list of very good reasons, nor Music Industry, nor TV, nor Streaming. People now (2024) under 40, 30, 20, 10...is almost completely devoted to Games, VideoGames. And that's the best possible scenario. Because there are other rising THINGS like Tik-Tok and similar crap. It should be mandatory have passed Primary School to be allowed to open an account there or even just watch it. Because I wonder why youngsters under 16 have acces to smartphones. With an easy awswer to find: Everything is within the framework of a master plan. An EVIL one. The 1% want all of us use our minds less and less every day goes by. And if possible, out of the streets. Recluses at home. The Brave New World of The Home Delivery. So they got all the old precious things of this Planet for themselves. And if someone, a person, a social collective, or an entire population, faces them, they can wipe out all of them out of this Planet with almost anyone noticing anything at all because everybody is hooked up to The Machine.

Thanks for this precious news: it keeps contact with Miss Garbo going, alive. Her memory need not be forgotten. Many people loved and still love her for the person besides her movie persona; greta, maybe, didn't value fame, but she loved to be admired and valued as a human being

I never liked that pretentious frozen look on her face. Maybe It was acted or a Hollywood identity. Well, if you're going yo be in a film don't act so stuck up. This is the 1st X I see mote natural expressions and a smile.

So-called "Greta Garbo" was born Greta Lovisa Gustafsson. Obviously just another example of 'Hollywood' deception & shallowness. Changing one's birthname is also disrespectful of heritage. The only valid reason of a name change is when women get married and add their husband's last name ...hopefully WITHOUT the unnecessary hyphen that sometimes is used, just for 'show'.

It’s not about being right, but creating an image. Blame the public. Ppl aren’t going to remember names that aren't catchy. If you are going to get mad at a name get mad at the creation Hollywood molded them into because most actors at the time didn’t look like the person we saw on screen.

Question: I understand she stopped doing movies in '41 largely because her films could not get distribution in Europe, where she was still successful. Why did it take until 1949 to screen test her again (since WWII ended in '45)?

A tribute to her alone is that she is still remembered and how she still creates an impression that is lasting. Unique...and if she was pitted against any actress who followed her to this day she would absolutely stand out. So beautiful BUT more importantly an actress with HUGE talent. Yes it is a shame she did not return to the screen...a huge loss but ohh her screen legacy is monumental.

Who's actually watched her movies? I don't think her style of acting has aged very well, honestly. The same can be said for a lot of those Old Hollywood stars. I'm not saying she wasn't a great talent, just that she seems old-fashioned and melodramatic now because conventions have changed.

I love Carl Davis's beautiful score for this documentary! It fits Garbo's iconic image perfectly. Wong Howe's photography of Garbo is stunning - the richness and depth of the shadows and light. Daniels does a great job too, but his lighting is more flat.

Greta's face can transition from one expression to another with minimal eye and mouth movements. From a heartbroken expression it can, in an instant, become questioning and then haughty... and then immediately ironic as intelligent little girls sometimes know how to do very well. There is something touching about this 40 year old woman who surpasses the beauty of many other actresses with her sheer charm. 💙Her way of smiling, or not smiling, is totally captivating and enchanting.
