I went to visit her grave here - a good few years ago now on a beautiful summers day.

I visited Garbo’s grave only a few days after her burial. I happened to be in Stockholm and made a point of going to this beautiful cemetery.

Greta, thank you for everything 🙏🏻

What a wonderful and impressive language swedish is!!

I just learned today that Greta Garbo is my 5th cousin. It’s interesting to see the similarities that run in my immediate family. My mom was an artist, I am an artist, and we are/were very private as well. Greta died from kidney failure as well did my mom. I also have pictures of my mom when she was 20 and the resemblance is strong. Pretty cool!

She liked discretion, so being cremated was the best end for such private and mysterious lady.

Anna Melanie True. It's uncertain why the family waited so long. My personal belief is the family wanted to give it time so no nutcase would come along and disturb her after burial. Now that may sound far fetched but I could get that fear considering how the public and press never let her go even long after retirement. And I think of how in the 70's Charlie Chaplins body was actually dug up in Switzerland and held for ransom! So even though the family was ridiculed for waiting so long I'm sure there was a good reason. Maybe someday they will speak on it.

well yes, the swedish goverment contacted the us gov and formelly requested that she b exhumed andtransfered over to sweden. thats why.

vibraloop Interesting comment but I don't see how the Swedish government had say in that. Where did you find that information? I would love to know more about it...actually I just googled it...A former mayor of Stockholm did lobby for a long time to have her buried back in Sweden. The family did have concerns about privacy, the media glare and all that comes with it. She was never interred in the ground in America, but her ashes are in the ground in Sweden and her parents and sister are buried close by.

@@songbirdy Actually a little correction, due to thefact that charlie chaplins urn been stolen she was never burried in the us. her remains were in storage for several years at the funeral home in new york, so gretas niece found a place for her grave and the swedish goverment in some controversal way requested the us gov to turn the remains over. ill try to find where i reall those parts, some is here (in swedish at the bottom) www.rotter.se/senaste-nytt/2835-veckans-gravsten-greta-garbo

Garbo's niece. They were very close. Garbo had no children. Her sister died young and had no children. She is the daughter of Garbo's only brother and his only legitimate child although there were claims he had fathered a son in his younger days out of wedlock. Either way, this lady here, Garbo left it all to her. Garbo hadn't worked in 50 years when she died. But her early investments in top 500 companies had made her a wealthy woman.
