    I'm not completely sure, but the narrator of this story MIGHT be actor-dancer-choreographer Grover Dale - who had a featured role in Coward's '61 musical SAIL AWAY and was part of his circle of friends at the time.

    That's Charles Busch who is known to have a very vivid imagination in his recollections of real life.

    Charles was the famous female impersonator but that doesn't sound like Charles.

    Noel was Marlene's best friend. Brian Aherme was an ex-lover of Marlene. Other lovers they both had: John Gilbert and Mercedes de Acosta.. lives that were super intertwined socially. Yet "we never met".

    I think this may be Geoffrey Johnson, an American friend of Coward's. (And Graham Payne was English.)
