Nobody understood Garbo, and I tend to believe she preferred it that way. She really didn't have much in common with the usual gloating celebrities.

They were totally different so it makes sense that Callas didn't get Garbo.

Most people didn't seem to get Garbo. But she will always be my favorite for various reasons. I love the fact LA sunshine everyday annoyed her. Most wouldn't voice that as it's connected to a happy disposition we put on for others in accordance to how we want others to perceive us. There was no pretense with her. Garbo didn't talk much but when she did she was straight forward honest.

I think possibly the truth may have been different on both her opinion of Garbo, considering her relationship with Onassis, and Maria's actual encounter with Olivier. To say that the great Olivier was "unaffected" is farce, as anyone who's known anything about Oliver. But Callas was always known as a great raconteur and great lady of the media. She was a great public star.

Garbo was a man, hence the "hormone issues" that made him quit.

Maybe she was a closeted lesbian or bisexual. Maybe that's why she always was very private and protective of her personal life, and never got married or had children. She was a woman of few words, and of few people in her close circle who really knew the real Greta Garbo. According to Joan Crawford, Garbo was mortified of large crowds, parties, and social events. She was once invited to Joan's house for tea or dinner, but across the street lived Barbara Stanwyck, who was hosting a large party. Garbo, thinking all the cars parked in the street were for Crawford's house, just left a note at Crawford's doorstep, saying, "Sorry, it's too big of a party for me." My guess is that she suffered from social anxiety, which is why she didn't do interviews or attended award shows. Garbo would also constantly sneak on Joan's set during filming, but one time, when Joan Crawford sneaked onto Garbo's set to see her act, and Garbo ran out the set like a deer, frightened to be seen. She was very shy and very insecure and self-conscious. A very introverted and reserved person, who preferred to be invisible, while still being comfortable to be nude in front of Jane Fonda. A very stereotypical Scandinavian woman. Toward the end of her career, she decided to quit Hollywood for good, perhaps because she was unhappy with her life, feeling quite lonely, misunderstood, born in the wrong era, and working for an industry that brings forth salacious publicity and gossip of her personal life, yet not offering proper roles for aging actresses as well. The most mysterious and alluring people always have this very fragile and soft interior underneath all that hard, cold exterior. It is a defense mechanism. She was rumored to have had a fling with Marlene Dietrich, who was rumored to be bisexual. Marlene claimed she never met Garbo, but admired her. If the rumors were true, then I could totally see Marlene taking advantage of the Garbo. Marlene was very charismatic, glamorous, indiscreet, and cavalier. She had a very predatory, femme fatale aura, and a narcissistic quality about her, almost as if she always had to be the dominant alpha. Greta, on the other hand, seemed more fragile and vulnerable, coming from a modest, provincial, and poor background. She seemed more inexperienced and self-conscious next to the more sexually liberated Marlene Dietrich.
