Apparently my father had been a fan of the Louvin Brothers when they sang Gospel music. He lost that admiration when they left Gospel and started singing secular music. When I was growing up I was "discouraged" from listening to someone who had "sold their soul to them devil." Daddy was a man of few words and chose those carefully. For him to have named them meant he knew more than was common knowledge. He refused to talk about it other than to say "I would rather you didn't listen to them" and I didn't. I can't remember Daddy having ever had anything bad to say about any other particular person. That is, I guess, why this memory has stuck with me so long. Daddy died in May of the year you were born. He has been dead almost as long as you have been alive.

Papaw Ed, thanks for always watching and commenting! I have a friend who refused to listen to the Oak Ridge Boys once they went from gospel to country. Almost all country singers started singing in church before performing country music, so we'll have to cull pretty much everyone, if we use that standard. We should definitely use our gifts and talents for the Lord, at least to some degree, which Charlie and Ira clearly did. Jesus said that we should love God with all our heart, soul, and mind, but none of us truly do that on the scale that He deserves. When it comes to the Louvins, they actually sang and wrote both country and gospel from the very beginning. Their first record label was Apollo, then Decca, then MGM. The first two were in the late '40's. They recorded country songs for all three of these labels. When they signed with Capitol in 1952, Capitol would only let them record gospel. The reason wasn't about any bias against country. It was because Capitol had first signed Jim & Jesse, who sang mostly country. Capitol didn't want two country brother duets competing with each other on the same label. It wasn't until 1956 that Capitol finally relented and let Charlie and Ira release their first country song for Capitol, which was "When I Stop Dreaming." Ironically, Jim & Jesse got their deal with Capitol by recording a Louvin Brothers song, "Are You Missing Me." Jesse learned the song from Charlie while they were both in the Korean War. Jesse got back to the states before Charlie, and he and Jim recorded the song on the Capitol label. Because Capitol had much wider distribution than their first three labels, some folks thought or assumed that the Louvins went from all gospel to country, but in fact, they went in this order: a mixture of gospel and country, to gospel only, then back to a mixture. I am sure that your father was a very wise and perceptive man, but I respectfully disagree with his view of the Louvins. If they had any agreement with the devil, it wasn't to the devil's advantage. The Louvins wrote 250+ songs that declare the gospel, and they performed those songs till they died. It's a certainty that many people accepted Christ while hearing their gospel music. For the last 5 years or so of Charlie's life, he recorded only gospel. Many of the Louvin gospel songs will still be sung in churches and at other gatherings 100 years from now, if the world doesn't end before then. The devil doesn't want anyone to believe that he is real. Ira wrote several classic songs that warned people that the devil is very real and something that we have to guard against, through faith in the Lord. A couple of examples are Satan is Real and Satan Lied to Me. When you and I get to heaven, we'll see not only our fathers but we'll see Charlie and Ira too. :-) God bless you.
