Seven Year Blues (in Honor of Ira Louvin's Birthday)

Музыка

I'm a couple of days late this year with our birthday tribute to Ira Louvin. Hopefully, Ira would have understood. :-) If you want to jump straight to the audio of me and Pap singing Seven Year Blues, go to 13:51. I mentioned in the introduction that Pap and I sang the song too low (based on him giving in to my preference way back then). When I listened to the audio, the pitch was even lower than I remembered! It's a shame that I didn't listen to Pap, who clearly knew best about the that key we should have used for the song. In addition to wanting to sing too low, I also sang with way too much vibrato back then, and you can hear it in this song. Today, I try to use vibrato more sparingly, just on certain notes and usually only at the end of lines or on key notes. Anyway, putting the low pitch and excessive vibrato aside, we sang the song pretty well. Here's a link to a rough video of me and Pap signing the song, with Ben helping on guitar: • Seven Year Blues
If you would like to hear the Louvins sing the song, go here: • Early Louvin Brothers ... To hear the excellent version from the Webster Brothers, go here: • Seven Year Blues There are many other versions online. Check them all out and let me know which ones you like best!

I think the version you and Pap sang was just terrific👍🏻😊 We sing and play... As a family... AndI know oftentimes we are much harder on ourselves then what we need to be. There's no perfection...just someone who's willing to practice really hard and then actually perform😊 Prayers over your Mama and you all🙏💯♥️

When Katie named her baby boy Ira, I hadn’t heard that beautiful name in a long time. It is such a great name. I’m glad she chose it. We are very likely going to start hearing about lots of little boys being named Ira.

Paul, Your perspective on love and cheating is absolutely spot on. If you cannot commit to on person you certainly can’t expect that person to be committed to another. But I am sure there are exceptions sometimes we are married to the wrong person…pressure from family etc or there is a domestic violence situation. But I would think living in your “Truth” is the best way to be. “ Putting God first as I once heard one pastor say.…he will take places you never dreamed of” Practice this in all areas of our lives I think is the key….Love all the knowledge you have you and share you are extremely bright and intelligent it certainly shines through!🌻💛 Beautiful singing and playing. My prayers to your mother!! All the way from NJ. I’m glad to see you’re all taking a day off to take care of yourselves so you can be there for granny. I’m sure she’s a hoot at the hospital. Her personality is infectious…She’s such a sweet person. God bless you and the rest of your family and thanks for the songs that you share and the stories, Blessings, Esme’ And my final words as I leave are “Happy Birthday” to Ira Louvin. I am sure you have fabulous memories, singing and playing his songs with your father and family. 🎉😊 Ps. Love Edgar Allen Poe. I can’t believe you mentioned him. I read a lot of what he’s written over my lifetime several times over.

Gosh you said so much that is good, I don't know where to start. "You should know, if I'd cheat her, then I'd cheat you too" (and the little guitar flourish, perfect). Really appreciate the reference to Poe, and especially the point you made. You definitely have the heart of a teacher; I understand 'reverb' now, only from these videos. (Apparently I LOVE A LOT OF REVERB. 🙃 I'm single-handedly driving up the Louvin bros. 'You're Running Wild" on Spotify. ) Thank you, Paul. Praying for Mrs. Wilson's recovery, grateful she, along with your Pap, raised such a fine batch of people. 🙌🏼 💞

Paul, thank you for your postings. You have such musical talent - as does your family. Just wanted to mention that I was unable to hear your speaking voice on this post. I have the volume up as high as my laptop can manage but had to use the closed caption function to know what you were saying. I have a similar problem with most of the music posted on this channel and especially on Celebrating Appalachia. I can hear the music extremely well but never am able to make out the lyrics. Sometimes, when you provide the lyrics or when I can find the song on line, I read the lyrics while the video is playing and can follow that way. Don't know if another microphone is needed or if this is a problem specific to me and/or my equipment. Others have mentioned how much they got out of a particular song or how the lyrics touched them so, apparently, other folks can hear fine. Hope you, Tipper and Steve can get at least a little rest while you're keeping watch over your mother at the hospital. You know that there are literally thousands of people praying for Granny and for all of you. God bless.

@@BlindPigAndTheAcorn Thanks for your reply. I have found on Amazon small amplifiers that can be plugged into laptops and am ordering one. I think the problem is simply that my equipment is so basic that it lacks the ability to adjust sound in any real way. Maybe I can upgrade to something better down the road; meanwhile, I think the amplifier will help. Just today, I found and watched your 50th anniversary review of the Wilson Brothers' album Words of Life - well, only side A so far. You dad's lyrics were better than a sermon. I am so in awe of his talent and that of his brothers and we are all so blessed that that talent flows through you, too. I enjoyed your feedback and that of your cousins as you all shared your memories and take-aways of the music and of your fathers during the time they were putting the album together. I wish I could have known and talked with your father. His depth of knowledge of the bible and it's teaching seem phenomenal. Thank you so much for sharing with all of us, Paul.

Have you heard the Gibson Brothers sing that song? I would send you a link but KZread don't like that and I have lost your email address. If you still have mine, please send me an email so I will have it. I listened to the Webster Brothers up until that string stretching whining crying pedal steel reared its ugly head.

Hi, Papaw. Yes, I listened to the Gibson Brothers sing it the night I posted this video. Not bad at all! I admire how they do things their own way and don’t try to copy others. I got to see them live in Hiawasse a few years ago. Just as good in person. Ironically, the steel player in that cut was Hank Sr.’s steel player, considered one of the very best, but to each his own. If I can, I’ll shoot you an email so you have my address. Thanks for watching and commenting!
