You WON’T BELIEVE What He Does In This Poker Hand!
Jonathan analyzes a crazy poker hand that PokerCoaching coach Justin ‘JustGTO’ Saliba played in a $15,000 Triton Poker event in Hoi An, Vietnam against one of the best online poker players in the world - Markus ‘makeboifin’ Leikkonen.
You may be surprised to see that in Game Theory Optimal (GTO) world you should be using some of the junky hands as bluffs to raise against a small blind limp when you are in the big blind. Jonathan discusses that as the effective stack decreases the small blind should have more leads when they have called a raise from the big blind.
Justin Saliba is an American poker professional player with $2,700,000 in live tournament earnings, with his biggest live cash of $402,000 coming in 2022 in a $25,000 World Poker Tour high roller event. He’s also a legendary PokerCoaching coach of course!
Markus Leikkonen is from Finland and is a high stakes online NLHE heads-up cash game crusher, he is said by many to currently be one of the best poker players in the world. He is best known by his online poker nickname - ‘makeboifin’.
This Triton Poker series was held in Hoi An, Vietnam, it had 15 events ranging with buy-ins of $15,000 up to $100,000 in No-limit Hold’em and Short-Deck.
This poker hand took place during a high stakes $25,000 poker tournament in Hoi An, Vietnam in 2023 as part of a Triton Poker festival! On this poker live stream it was a battle of the blinds as Markus ‘makeboifin’ Leikkonen decides to complete for 20,000 from the small blind with 75o. PokerCoaching coach Justin ’JustGTO’ Saliba decides to raise to 60,000 with 84o. makeboifin decides to call and they both head to a flop of 9d 8c 5h. makeboifin checks, and Saliba continues his aggression with a bet of 70,000. Leikkonen, unfazed and with bottom pair decides to call Saliba’s bet. The turn is a spicy one as the Jh falls. This now gives Leikkonen a pair plus a double gutshot straight draw. Leikkonen takes matters into his own hands and decides to shove for Saliba’s remaining stack of 195,000. Saliba uses a few time extensions as he is facing a tough decision with his 3rd pair. Eventually he opts to call and finds a safe river card in the 2s ensuring his full double up which gives him a healthy stack for this high stakes poker tournament!

This blind vs blind poker is some of the most enjoyable to watch and play. 75o is a very clear limp-fold for me, esp against a world-class opponent. On the flop I like a check-jam with bottom pair junky draw. The turn donk looks like exactly what it is IMO.

Agree!
I’m not good enough to get into this spot. 🤣🤣 I’d folded preflop or shoved the flop.
Great play having such a huge draw that half the outs don’t get you paid if you check call and hit. He was just unlucky twice the first was that he got called, the second was that he missed the river. Missing the river was more likely than him getting called.
Magnús Ver Magnússon was a real strongman competitor he won worlds 4 times and is from Iceland not Finland, there was also another strongman competitor called Magnús Magnússon who was from Iceland also.
Sick!
Unbelievable call.
That's tough. With my tournament life on the line I would definitely fold.
I probably would not call. Strange line for sure. I guess that is why I am not in high stakes poker yet.
I would fold. Amazing call.

Same, but my opponents are a little more straightforward than Leikkonen 😅
Do you think it would be a mistake for hero to ship it in here? Considering Saliba was so shallow stacked and the board is somewhat dynamic?

The donk shove is very reasonable!
Leikkonen made an excellent move on the turn, I would fold on the turn to answer Jonathan’s question. Someone please tell me if my answer would be a mistake, obviously in this specific hand it would be bad. I’m asking if it’s good for the hero to fold or call in this situation overall against Leikkonen range?
This guy looks so much like you! With a ponytail and glasses! 😂
I could be coached every day for the rest of my life but I dunno if I could be good enough to be make the call where he is in this situation
This is a crazy anomaly surely 🎉😂
I would fold but I play against players who rarely bluff the river. Low stakes tournament players don’t bluff the river often so I need to overfold. Often I don’t and I lose EV.

Do they bluff the turn though?
What if Leikkonen reraised all in on the flop? I don’t think Saliba should autofold if that happened I think if it was me I would call the all in reraise. Would I be making a mistake?

I like this as well!
I have to call I have invested a lot of my chips at this point if he got it he's got it.
Fold. Ain't no way no how I could call with third pair four kicker for my tournament life. I'd have to wait for a better spot.
omg is Justin really #6???? I've been seeing him all over the place the past year, he's been crushing it!

I would likely fold. Unless I have a good read on my opponent.
Great play all the way around. I would’ve folded the 84 but I’m not a world class player though 😏

I would have fold..but excellent call by Justin Saliba!!..
i think i would hate it but call. I dont see a good reason why an slowplayed overpair, straight, 2pair, j and even a nigh would do this. So its is mostly a bluff or a marginal hand with some extra nut changes like 75 for example

very suspicious line for value, really feels like a bluff. would work against tight players.
Fold
Would've jammed my 8 on the flop maybe maybe not
Fold. I am in a bad spot with just 8 high.
fold
I guess pc coaches know what are they doing
Is Leikkonen a pro? I love how he stares off into the sky before making a decision.

folding, still got 10bb left.
I think this video has convinced me to stop playing poker.. lol you got a guy who is very good at poker explaining a video about whether 7,5 offsuit can find a fold, and uses the phrase “you’re never folding here, I think it’s too good of a hand to fold” .. we’re talking about 7,5 offsuit? I clearly don’t understand high level poker and this video confirmed for me I never will. Never with 7,5 off in my hand and a pair of 7s am I ever feeling confident wasting chips on that. Lmao
