And we also failed to prevent the conversion of the rage of the population into an ultra-right-wing racist wave.... We will continue to create a progressive alliance with no hegemonies, no authoritarianism within our ranks - because together we're going to move forward." I agree that the presentation could be better, but it is more about the international handcuffs that Greece has had to endure. Without resolving that it will be difficult to re-boot the Greek engine to produce the kind of monetary wealth needed to allow the people to feel confident of their financial safety. The banking system seems to run the whole international show as we in the U K are suffering as well as most other countries. I love Greece and the openness to newcomers. We intend to live in Pilio, our Shangra La, as soon as possible. Mobilising on the community level without too much academic rhetoric, is the most desirable way for change to happen. Any plan must meet the needs of the vast majority of the population in a down to earth concrete way. Thank you for your response.

Hello Yianni, I am very surprised that the Greek people cannot appreciate you for what you stand for and for what you can do for your country. May I suggest that you try to disband party politics! Putting a label such as fascist, right, left, communist, Green, or liberal is in my mind out of date. People are bogged down in trying to understand what their party stands for and whether the party representatives work towards a set of goals. I am a Greek Cypriot and what I am trying to explain has worked for Mr. Christodoulides in Cyprus. He went in as a non-party candidate and he won the presidency. By saying that you have left-party policies, you immediately write off those who think that they belong to the right/conservative party and the other parties. In order to help people to realize that they support your policies, even though they have not yet realized, firstly they have to be able to identify with you. I will be very happy to hear your comments.

This. Stop calling yourself "left", there is no reason to. In every second proposal of your program you say "hey we will do X, and X is not a Left measure, its just more fair", with the biggest example being the Bad Bank plan. And modern politics shouldn't have a political label, you might need to enforce "left", "right" or even "radical left" or "radical right" politics to different issues. Example, force police men to have cameras and penalize even more bad behavior and keep good police standards very high (left policy) but force them to apply the law to everyone, even if the lawbreaking happens by a minority group that someone could interpret it as minority oppression, even by going to notorious ghettos (right policy). When a monopoly happens, break it by intervention (left), but if syndicalists are disrupting society in a major way, intervene for the benefit of the majority (right), and communicate for a solution in a later time

I totally agree with you. Modern politics is not so much about communist vs non-communist. That distinction is not there. When forced to vote based on such distinctions, people start thinking of the 1967 Junta or the Greek Civil War or Fidel Castro or Stalin or whatever and miss out on making a sound judgement on the basis of the present political situation (arms race, NATO vs Russia escalation, globalisation, EU mismanagement, immigration, regional and environment issues). The other problem is finding good partners and good colleagues of a similar standing. Yanis is sometimes perceived more as a lone academic expert, not as a party.

In Theory, what the Left in Greece, Spain, France, the U K, and virtually all over the world, fail to understand is that when the disastrous behaviour of the right wing makes things worse the PEOPLE want to have leaders who can make their lives better NOW, not in 3-5-10 years. Do People expect the Left to change the financial situation when the international money cartels are the ones with the real power? What is a viable plan which will not isolate any country from the international pig trough? This is a world- wide problem and the Greek people must be able to believe in a tried and tested programme that benefits themselves. It will have to be very very bad for the economy before most people will vote for radical change. As much as I totally agree with Mr Varoufakis about the rotten structure of the international economy, I do not hear a well planned out remedy which would create substantive change and at the same time allow people to feel safe. The Ups and Downs of Greek history can get tiresome for the populace if those cycles become more frequent. People need to feel Safe as the first human value in our hierarchy of needs. A good and doable plan, based upon the degree of need, will win elections, not just theory. Maybe the first real steps are to call out all of the causes of corruption and petty hierarchies and squeeze the money changers until they understand their responsibilities to those they live with. Caring and sharing is what you firstly learn in the first year of school. Please get a good plan in place that the People can trust and relate to the track record of the Left. "Put up or shut up" is my motto.

Have you actually read what mera25 (diem25) are proposing? Because they have a pretty robust plan, with numbers attached to it and everything. The problem is three fold 1) people don't understand economics in greece. They'd rather trust vague political promises. The man is a professor of economics and sometimes people don't understand what he is saying, because he is indeed very smart and sometimes uses macro economics terminology 2)the media in greece won't promote him or feature him, as they are all funded by the new democracy party, 3)when he does get a feature in some local channel, the man comes across as emotional, because he is rightly fed up with all the war against him, constant distortion and twisting of what he says and kicks under the belt. He is too good for greeks I think. People don't see his vision.

Whether the political parties in the parliament under capitalism are progressive is not important, what matters is the will of the people to revolutionize. The election results only serve as a rough structural test to show this. Are diem25 and mera25 actually starting a revolution and making it a reality or are they just preparing for it and waiting for it to come?

I was saddened that Mera25 failed to gain the 3% cutoff. As one who voted OXI in the last referendum, I was disenchanted with Tsipras along with everyone else in the main political parties totally ignoring the results of the referendum and compromising the Greek economy because of their own lack of courage and vision. That was a once in a lifetime opportunity to end the old ways and start with a new political system and a new path to the future. The natural reaction of the Greek people since has been against the Greek Left that Tsipras represents.

I think loss of socialist movements in Europe in election systems tells how people distrust these movements. And it is completely fault of socialist movements in Europe, who keep joining governments, but not change directions of politics (which is even impossible, because in system you need ally with your enemy and make compromises with those who want prevent changes). In Greece this was one of most visible event when Syriza won power and then betrayed themselves and everyone who believed in them (including me, although I am from Finland, and never been in Greece). I think socialist movements in Europe should focus directly on people, and start abandoning election systems. Adopt more "anarchist" tactics in sense, that focus listen people directly and help them directly. When you just have your announcements and speeches from ivory towers, and when you get chance in power, and you betray those who believed in you - especially in post-Soviet era, that will keep you forever in marginal. You make yourself teethless and harmless for system what is harmful for people and life on this planet. Don't (politically) "marry" with your enemy - respect them as humans, but do not join them in politics. Focus on winning trust of people to your side (like Zapatistas did, instead of focusing just armed combat against federation of Mexico). There is nothing to win in election system at moment. Maybe there is in some point, but not before there is trust. How MAS won in Bolivia? With nice speeches? With armed rebellion? Or being real movement among people, focusing on winning trust of people? (By "socialism" I mean anything what want challenge and replace capitalism as ruling mechanism of society.) (I am ex-member of Finnish Social Democratic Party, Left Alliance party, and Communist Party of Finland - and not member of any political party for years now, because non of them have potential to become change in society)

The reason why these socialist parties are losing is because they support progressivist ideas. They support mass migration and illegal migrants. They support LGBT. They support renewables but not nuclear. This is why the Danish left is actually winning. And this is why the German right, the Swedish right, the Polish right, the Hungarian right, the Greek right, the Italian right and now the French right are winning.

Failed miserably!... The Greek State had bailed the banks out after they went virtually insolvent, at a cost of more than €30bn. They got a majority stake as a result, of course. These were lost in just a few months, during his ministerial term. Wealth accumulated over decades swiftly evaporated. Foreign investors took control of the Greek banking sector with an investment of some €5bn. Before, this was the value of each of the four major banks - National Bank was at ca €8bn. He should rather have been imprisoned for life.

Sadly 2 out of four are systemic and the lead of the communist party promotes totalitarianism. The other one party has been both left and right and has been propagandising mera. It will be difficult to make a coalition with them, but their people must hear our message as well and take their decisions.

The next three parties. One is communist, one is socialist and the other is centre-left. The communist party never does coalitions so even if the other two do coalition ,they still lose to new democracy. The right has around 55% of the total votes.

No, that's not the case. Greeks object to losing all their savings for some economic experiment (e.g. the Euro) where the experimenters are not even Greek and people also object to wars for the sake of getting rid of old weaponry to buy some new from companies that are not even Greek, but Greeks are neither anti-European nor anti-American/British nor suicidal.

Good Riddance!... His tenure was an utter disaster! The Greek State had bailed the banks out after they went virtually insolvent, at a cost of more than €25bn. They got a majority stake as a result, of course. These were lost in just a few months, during his ministerial term. Wealth accumulated over decades evaporated almost instantly. Foreign investors took control of the Greek banking sector with an investment of some €5bn. Before, this was the value of each of the four major banks - National Bank was at ca €8bn. He should have rather been imprisoned for life. An example to avoid...

The evaporation of the Greek banks' capital had to do with the style of fiscal reform insisted on by the Troica. It had already began during the previous governments' tenures. Certainly the ultimate causes were elsewhere. Varoufakis was unable to prevent a 4th memorandum or dissociate the Greek economy from the monetary union, so he cannot be blamed for a policy that was not his own - indeed for a policy that he was opposed to.

How come fascism always comes from the Right? How about the fascism coming from the Left, you always miss that! The biggest indicator of the presence of fascism is intolerance of opposing views or opinions to your own, and the Left has a bad record of this as well. At the end of the day power is power and it is oppressive and corrupting and absolute power is absolutely oppressive and corrupting.

You contributed to the electoral disaster of the Greek left (you are not the only author of it, but you have contributed, and for that you must assume responsibility). You went around Europe telling other countries' left-wing parties, movements and formations to unite against the threat of corporate politics (whether represented by the right or the far right) but you were not, because of your personal vendettas with Syriza, heeding your own advice in Greece. I read an article today that cogently argued that the political mafia of the right-wing dynastically led New Democracy party (with quite a few far-right elements included in its ranks), a corrupt to the core, reactionary and destructive force (governing on behalf of local and global kleptocracies), will now present itself as the 'stabilising moderate force' against the far-right and Neo-Nazi mutations that have entered Greek parliament. This was one of the worst electoral outcomes in Europe for decades, along with Hungary's Orban and the fascists in Italy (whose left has exactly the same problems as the Greek left, it seems: multiple factions bickering with one another, each struggling to get sole possession of political 'truth' and 'integrity', rubbishing the others as 'inauthentic', as 'traitors', etc. The left in Italy and Greece alike appear to spend their energies in fighting over things that are of interest to certain groups within their own parties but which leave the rest of society indifferent, or worse, leave society feeling forced to act as passive observers to such quarrels, rather than have a politics to address their everyday concerns). Moreover, you too enthusiastically promoted the destructive logic of 'they are all the same' (thinking that you could take votes away from Syriza and save your parliamentary career. Anyone not blinded by personal vendettas could have told you what the outcome of that strategy would be). The sole beneficiaries of the destructive logic of 'they are all the same' have always been (everywhere in the world) the right and the far right. Given this tragedy for, in particular, Greek and, in general, European politics (such a result reflected in the next EU elections will mean the far right across the EU will be the second biggest political force, and the right, or, at best, the likes of ghastly Macron, will be playing the part of the 'rational alternative'). Given the horror of this very real possibility, the fortunes of your Diem25 in Greece are the least important issue. What is important is that you did not see this disaster coming, that you totally failed to realise the clear and present danger of such an outcome. You are an interesting economics theorist, and you have greatly contributed to clarifying economic terms and processes for the masses, for which you should be thanked, but you have been a disaster as a politician and a political thinker.

@@AltairTao I have read it now, and it is a story that subordinates action to an infinite (and hence abstract) number of possible outcomes (of accidents rather than actions -which is the first mistake you made in thinking this story to be relevant in what goes on here). One is not responsible for accidents (non-predictable) happening during an activity, but one (subjectively and collectively) is responsible for what they have consciously been doing. Another worrying part in this story is that it models human action (political) on 'nature' and its workings, which is a deeply problematic and dangerous 'understanding' of human action. Also, your 'exemplary' story is self-undermining. It calls for an infinity of outcomes, mystically interconnected factors that can go a million ways, while manipulating the (supposed) infinity to go its (the story's) way. The farmer's son could have broken his neck and died on the spot before any draft could get him. Or instead of dying from the fall, he was drafted but never saw active combat. Or was promoted to general within 2 months of his being drafted and lived as a hero for the next 70 years of his life! Or was rejected because he had severe asthma. We all can play this game forever, and never act (collectively) in our lives or take responsibility for the disastrous, concrete (and all too real) outcomes of our own actions. In short, stop consoling yourself that things will magically turn for the better, because it is abstractly possible (abstract notion of possibility).

So I think that throwing the blame to a person that demonstrated time and time again to have such qualities brings little to the table.
