As an Englishman living Spain, I notice that there is a quite a bit of cronyism/corruption at council level, but at national. level politicians are stamped on hard and being sent to prison for 10+ years for corruption. Meanwhile in England, the Govt. accidentally loses 3 billion pounds to their friends and donors during the pandemic but can't be bothered to get it back. But the UK doesn't do corruption, so we'll call it an oversight..

I've always understood the fact that corruption in the European Union is on a much more sophisticated level than corruption in the Balkans for example. But the term cheap corruption and industrial scale corruption brings it home . Great explanation.

I can agree that there is high level corruption in northern countries but I find it hard to believe that in the south the corruption just disappears when you move up the ranks. What people have to consider is that things like the corruption index only measure PERCEPTION of corruption where high level will have almost no impact, so that can be an explanation to why you may see maps that give of a distorted picture. Still I think there is more corruption in the south and ex Soviet countries.

@@christopherstein2024 Im from the Balkans, Serbia(corrupt country by mainstream studies). The way I see it is: For lower levels Enough money=no corruption Lack of money=corruption For example, an average cop in Serbia doesn't have enough money to send both of his kids to a school trip so he accepts small bribes to make up for it, while in Germany cops can cover it with their salaries so they don't feel the temptation. For the upper levels Varoufakis is spot on, they are all corrupted. Western Europeans do it on a much larger scale they just label it as lobbying. The same thing goes for wars and war crimes. Every month we over here hear lectures from EU or US about war crimes we did in the 90. while at the same time they killed 500k children in the middle-east. It's all about the narratives and who is powerful enough to build and maintain them.

I try to explain this to my dad all the time about corruption in America, but he never gets it. All he sees is "street corruption". The cop that asks for $20; the building inspector that wants some cheddar. The corruption in America is much more advanced. It's the lobbying, the tax rates, the courts ruling that all contracts result from equal bargaining power, etc.

Like europeans, we're like the unthinking herd with iron rings through our noses being led by the same sort of people that lead Europe. Yet we will own nothing and we will be happy! I am a dual Czech and Slovak citizen, living in Denmark, so I follow the politics of these 3 countries and I voted in every one of them (Czech and Slovak parliament / presidential elections), and in Denmark I voted in EU parliament elections due to being an EU citizen. I noticed a common pattern. The prime minister sits on the EU council meetings, votes for whatever EU law proposal, and then comes home and then starts hallucinating about the "Dictate from Brussels". It's a disgrace how the heads of government avoid responsibility for decisions they themselves are part of. I agree, let's livestream all EU council meetings. Afterall, it is the equivalent of the US senate, which also has public sessions. There is one problem though, all of the deals will be done in backrooms instead, and the council will be a show. But at least there will be a videotape of the prime ministers voting for a certain law, which the public will be able to criticize them for.

Can remember them thundering against the EU Constitution/Lisbon Treaty insisting they would never sign it, and giving us a "cast-iron guarantee" we would get to vote on it if they get in. Well, Labour get booted and the Conservatives get in...and promptly sign it. No say given to us. Bit them in the arse, as had the British public been given a say on EU issues they may have felt listened to and less inclined to leave altogether. And Brexit infuriated the Conservatives' international donors, and is looking likely to kill off their party.

This is not exactly a No Corruption vs Lots of Corruption discussion... There is an automatic benefit and privilege from being in those Central-North European countries! And I bet Yanis knows what I'm talking about... Because he has been in that EU parliament... Some political people in my country testified how some European countries are treated... They made a fool out of Yanis for example! Going on votes and putting him out of the room??!? How exactly is that Democracy and Sovereignty?!? He also talked about other stuff that were SHOCKING. I remember his talk about meeting some German minister... He bluntly said that "Democracy is worth jack-sh*t". And this war between Russia-Ukraine... Those NATO people go out there preaching Democracy, Freedom, Capitalism,.... It's ALL A BIG FAT LIE. There's no democracy!!! It's the power of the Big and the Rich that want more land, more resources, more $$$, more slaves, etcetcetc. Or something along those lines... When Putin called/mentioned "Neo-Nazis"... Yup, he's not mistaken. It kind of is a Nazi regime!!! This time it has some differences from WW2 but the same principles are there - all power to Germany (or central Europe), other countries are basically forced labour and cannon fodder hubs, if you're not White you get scraps, if you're not in their political preference you don't matter, etcetcetc. It's that Supremacy BS alllll over again. And btw, Americans and English are in the mix too but it's like... Their 'dirty secret'. They say they're against those things but secretly they help and support those dogmas/regimes. Europe is fuc*ed for sure!!! It's over! This stuff caused a lotttttt of damage... And actually, in my opinion, a lot of death and human suffering!!! It's not only in Ukraine, they're getting the WORST of it but... We already have a generation that is contemplating living on the streets or migrating to other countries. The development Indexes are receding to 1970-1980 levels. Europe is being attacked on multiple fronts... The Americans want to tear it down, the Russians want to tear it down, the Middle Easterns want to tear it down,.... Even europeans want to tear it down! Because we also are being sabotaged from the inside... Politicians made a disaster on the whole project. Yes, the job they do is not as valued as what westernes work, but that still doesn t make them lazy. The truth is that southern and eastern europe weren t blessed by the money from colonialism and US-money after the WW2, not to mention communism that was broght by Russia post WW2. All these factors are to blame for the disparities between West and East, not laziness or corruption. The west is far more corrupt, they did it for centuries before us, but now they ve reached a level that it makes it very hard for the ordinary people to feel it first hand, in comparison to eastern europe where the “small corruption” is easily percived.

My guess was that western success was essentially having enough money so that people in power can grab some for themselves, while also having enough money for that bridge to be built. Corruption is a global institution driven by greedy societies. It is indeed easier to spot In countries with lower levels of industrialisation, however, it is equally present in countries with high levels of industrialisation. Thank you for talking about this. Corruption has many forms, they all should be revealed and stopped. Part of the problem is that most of us humans, even those who think they understand mathematics, really don't react much differently regardless if we are talking one million vs one billion. Obviously, there is one thousand times difference, but most of us, most of times, act or react as if it was almost the same amount. Transparency is the best way forward. However, decency, courage and servitude, are not the characteristics of most politicians, add to that the tendency of self graduating of most political groups about insignificant or imaginary victories and you will have a barely useful and often a time wasting yet costly almost a parasitic entity. In regards to Qatari lobbyists: You just talked about big money corruption vs small money corporation. Think the same way regarding the big American influence vs small Qatari influence. The question is why the Qatari one upsets you most? The problem is that people chose the representatives often because they dislike the other side more. Unfortunately most of these candidates have always thought of betraying the people they represent, for the right amount of money, long before they became elected officials or politicians. The whole thing was/is nothing but an opportunity to satisfy their own selfish needs, serving the people and standing for this or that was/is not their main focus their goal was just to do a good dance/show for the galleries in order to have some authority and get richer.

the funny thing is i think a lot of people sense this and yet have been conditioned to accept it ...they cant imagine anything else...i always come back to david graebers words.,,the only war the capitalists ever managed to win was the war against the imagination...which is why the oligarchs and corporations control the arts as much as they can .. the most insidious and fucking infuriating type of propaganda ...they fund the arts that tell the story that makes it appear as if no other system than the current system could be ...any other system ..or god forbid a free and caring system , would obviously immediately plunge us all into chaos and terror ..this is the subtext of so many films and television and books and ofcourse academia mirrors and feeds this ...only the maveriks tell another more hopeful story...which is why Yanis's book Another Now is so vital right now we all know the value of the artists who awakened us music such as Pink Floyd, John Lennon, Bob Dylan, Bob Marley and writers, Orwell, Huxley, Chomsky, artists like Van Gogh who had the impudence to love nature and farmers and askew the bourgeois aesthetics of the day ..who loved a sunflower more than a rose..i believe we need a revolution of our imagination and we need a carnival of brave artists...now i might be a little biased because i confess i'm a painter ❤️❤️

he said "organised resistance", not "just resist" and there is a difference, also in current reality, even that "just resist" would be a miracle, the majority of people are just placid passive consumers? well trained since kindy to be so and unless, like it was in Russian Empire in 1917, people have nothing to lose there be no fighting, no revolution and that's exactly why people in power have all the welfare and charities running so "the crumbs trickle down to peasants" they are not stupid

@@LouisMaxBlank yes i empathize with your despair! Their are good reasons for hope i believe. For one all life seeks freedom and seems to be in continual cycling flux. Their are moments of opportunity for change and this is one of them! but i think Yanis is right it is the Left that must change, it is us that must change. We must learn a greater level of humility and a deeper sense of agape and throw off our mantel of victimhood and its accompanying cynicism in order to collaborate more effectively with each other. There are some wonderful things coming to light... have you read Isomomia by Kojin Karatani

Council of the EU meetings should absolutely be televised! Brexit happened in large part because of a lack of transparency within the European Union. Reducing European Council power and improving legislative transparency (Council and EP together decide on legislation) will help reduce the risk of corruption and improve transparency. COREPER meetings should be broadcast as well.

Im from iceland but lived in a few countries cz, dk, usa, swed, germa, and i remember that after 2008 when i finished highschool i thoght the conditions set on the helenic republic was a joke, but in 2015 i moved to cyprus for 3 years when i got back to iceland and i was frequently asked about how it was to live in such a corrupt place and i would tell them i prefered the corruption there than the one in iceland since in cyprus its alot easyer and realy dosnt cost too much if you have to greese the wheels a bit to get things moving while here the only way is to be born right or know some one born right, then you can get what ever you want. And we clame to be one of the least corrupt, the only thing is that corruption here is reserved for a few who then take it to industrial level like you say They make fun of goverment workers in the south while here when i went to uni of iceland my maths prof did not want to teach me because i went to the wrong highschool, mr where the kids of elite tend to go, when i complaind to the counselor, the counselor asked me what i thoght he should do and i said i dont know i would fire him for not opholding his contract they laughed and stood up and indicated for me to go and said you will understand this when you are older. Years later a new possition was being formed in the uni and it was like talord for a man i know he just finished heading a large 10m eur reaserch project and is older and thoght to slow down and found this to be perfect, so he aplied, the uni responded that there were two candidate selections ahead of him 2 wimen one compleatly fresh from her doc the other relatively fresh with 7 citations to her work, he has more than 2000 after the other 2 backed out after their interviews instead of interviewing him they desided not to form the new possition, here you cant even get a possition you deserve if you are not born right, in this case the only reason to stop when it came to him is he had experience and was critically aclaimd but had a p and not a v. Its not the best example there are the fishing families and latest fishfarming scandals the gov putting s minister who owns the biggest property owning group with a few friends over solving the rent crisis, banks and gov and old money pretending to be honest but have a nice sirculation between them. Fx that icelandic bankers got punished is a fabrication, triels were announced but nothing happened exept the priminister got a parrol sentence
