“We Were Elected to Say No to the Creditors”: Varoufakis on Resigning as Greek Finance Minister

democracynow.org - The International Monetary Fund is demanding additional austerity measures from Greece if it does not hit its budget targets. It’s the latest impasse in years of fierce political clashes between Greece and international creditors. We are joined by a man who had a front-row seat to these battles: the former Greek finance minister for the anti-austerity Syriza party, Yanis Varoufakis. In his new book, "And the Weak Suffer What They Must?: Europe’s Crisis and America’s Economic Future," he describes how he helped lead Greece’s battle against European Central bankers and a historic referendum in which Greeks resoundingly voted down austerity. But only days after the "no" vote, he resigned. Varoufakis elaborates on the resignation statement he issued last July, when he wrote, "Soon after the announcement of the referendum results, I was made aware of a certain preference by some Eurogroup participants, and assorted 'partners', for my … 'absence' from its meetings; an idea that the prime minister judged to be potentially helpful to him in reaching an agreement. For this reason I am leaving the ministry of finance today." He famously said at the time, "I shall wear the creditors’ loathing with pride."

+A Skeptical Human Yes, but it probably differs from nation to nation in regards to how its represented. The main issue is that despite what Varoufakis is saying. Its pretty evident that Greece, similar to Spain, has been economically irresponsible for decades. Faking their numbers in several ways in order to make their economy seem better than it was. Now that it all blew up in their face, they are talking about how the "banks" are the bad guys while totally omitting their own wrong doings. While I am not saying Varoufakis is guilty himself. The Greeks as a nation have been enabling such behavior and in small ways it has been seen throughout Greek society. Like being a tourist and being ask if you "want" to pay VAT or not. Obviously insinuating that if you did the shop keep would just pocket the tax himself etc. Greece is NOT a victim.

If you watch the other parts of this interview of read what Varoufakis has written about this, he never claims Greece is a victim. He does point out that Greece's situation was no different that anyone else's but it became a scapegoat for a larger issue that was hitting all of Europe. It was long before he was appointed that Goldman Sachs knowingly falsified financials in order to get Greece into the EU and be able to take out these loans. It's also ludicrous to believe that those involved didn't know the financials were fraudulent as it was widely reported and talked about in economic journals at the time. So yes, the previous government shouldn't have allowed this happen and the EU shouldn't have allowed this happen, but everyone was riding high on this weird idea of infinite growth and allowed it to happen. To force austerity measures on a country with so little economic output is mind boggling stupid. Cutting social welfare programs is mind boggling stupid as it is the quickest means of achieving direct capital injection in a starving market (something a lot of pseudo-capitalists seem to forget from their econ classes).

MKTech "He does point out that Greece's situation was no different that anyone else" Which is called DOWNPLAYING ones own guilt and no. "Everybodys" else situations wasnt like Greece. But stating that has the effect of what? DOWNPLAYING ones owns actions. "Oh, sure I committed a crime, but so did everybody else... Therefor I should get a light sentencing. I mean its only fair!" /sarcasm Greece should have never been allowed to enter the EU. Is the EU partially guilty of that, sure, but that doesnt change what Greece did.

+golo5000 Alexis Tsipras, was a plant by the German banks. He won before but could not form a government this was the test by the banks and they waited for the right timing for the next election. When the time came to fight the big bank they forced a election fully well knowing he would win again and form a government, but this time to do the dirty work of the German bank. Time to resign prime minister Alexis Tsipras.

+Rachel Golem Seriously? Greece was and still is capitalist. The private creditors fucked up their due diligence and then the EU bailed them out, by giving *loans* backed by the European tax payers to Greece and forcing them to use those loans to mainly pay off those private creditors. At the same time Greece was forced into making ridiculous cuts in almost all sectors, without any kind of stimulus package, thus strangling the Greek economy by ruining the financial safety of the Greek people and killing off aggregate demand. The military, however, was not allowed to make big cuts, as they still had to buy several Tornados from us (Germany). Nothing of that has to do with socialism. Socialism would be the collectivization of the means of production. This is just plain old capitalism. The biggest asshole wins.
