It runs as cartel. From wiki: A cartel is a group of independent market participants who collude with each other in order to improve their profits and dominate the market. Cartels are usually associations in the same sphere of business, and thus an alliance of rivals. Whats that if not EU, heh? Other powers, not that EU is "power", at least steal from non-member states. EU is the only cartel that rob its own state members.

Nonetheless those countries have been deeply bankrupt especially Greece and as long as you have a monetary union those countries should receive money in order to improve themselves. Now, the way EU lend money (loans) to Greece for instance (austerity measures), makes it impossible not to ask for further "solidarity" programms while the current debt is already unviable and not restructured. Instead of giving solutions EU expands the problematic situation among Europe, dividing Europeans North-South pointing the finger to one another. I remember someone who runs a fairly popular facebook group and was vehemently opposed to Tory austerity tell me that the problem in Greece wasn't that austerity had been foisted on them by the EU but that the Greek government was cutting back the wrong things. Blind allegiance to any institution will make a hypocrite of you sooner or later.

I've never understood why Greece has so much poverty. According to Wikipedia, average GDP per capita (PPP) is $29,000. The people are smart and hard working, they have a good industrial base and fantastic tourism and shipping industries. Greece should be the Singapore of southern Europe.

Apparently it is exactly because Greeks are so hard working that the country is poor. If an overworked labour force is the norm, it will lower the cost of labour, and thus wages. Greeks are also less productive, even though they work more hours. They will have more success if they immitate the German work ethic, I believe.

Question for Mr. Varoufakis: what happened with the billions China paid for the de facto purchase of the port(s)? That was your doing, right? Greece sets its priorities wrong. Whatever financial support or leniancy, it will never be enough. Corruption is the key word.

Yanis, as of now, EU is a bunch of countries that work together for better and more efficient economy, you are expecting a bit too much right now. Yet, it would be good to say that Greece did not want help at first and eventually, countries came over to help, once it was reported in the news - that Greece fire fighters(thank you for all what you have done) were not able to manage. It took 6 days for Greece to ask for help, if I remember well?

Oh jeez, Greece is still in EU? Why didn't you leave when you were in charge, Yanis? Does EU breach their commitments, not these imaginative ones, these in paper? Austerity is a useful word when you take a loan, use it to finance populist expenditures and don't want to give it back.

  • @Redstarka22

Yanis was never in charge, though. He was a finance minister who actually tried to come up with a deal that would benefit both the EU at large and Greece. Unfortunately, the interests of the bureaucrats and politicians in the EU member countries was more to punish Greece, no matter the consequences.

@@Redstarka22 and they still want to be a member of EU? I guess EU were stupid because they didn't want to benefit from that great proposal of Yanis? that would contradict that EU were greedy :) The same in Poland, I ask the same questions - if you hate bureaucrats in EU, if you think you don't benefit or there is no surplus, why don't you leave?
