I have an MT09 and can confirm, it's incredible. I've rode boats, helicopters, quads, snowmobiles in the mountains, high horsepower cars and I also drive fast for work. That said, none of that compares to riding this bike. Such an absolute blast.

@@freebehindbars8654I still prefer the 09 engine, wich is way more challenging. I've rode the GP version of KTM on track, besides Z1000 R Edition, Z900 and 765RS, and found the KTM engine and gearbox kind of sharp and of a lower grade than the one in the MT-09. That 890 engine lacks some vibration balance system, as that one my 2012 BMW F800R has, a counter-balance "dead" rod, for lowering the vibrations. In the end of the day, the 09 is the only I would have instead of my 2012 F800R - but is twice the price.

I am 52 & have had the pleasure of purchasing the new 2021 Tracer 9 in November which is basically the same as the MT09 other than screen & fairing bits.. Been riding it for 6 months now here in South Africa(Cape Town). I have done 13 000km on it already because i just CANNOT stop riding this FANTASTIC machine!! I have had numerous bikes & also own a VFR1200DCT with 140k on the clock, which is by the way the most under rated bike ever.. Just needed some suspension tuning from stock.. anyway the Tracer 9 motor is extremely intoxicating to ride with the agile suspension & fantastically smooth quick shifter.. I also have the basic suspension with only the one fork being rebound adjustable. I have not found the rear shock to be soggy so far even when pushing hard.. I guess you just need to play with preload & rebound. If you are loosing grip it could be too much rebound damping & the shock does not rebound quick enough. Yes i had to increase the rebound damping by one click on the front to get a bit better composure & balance, but after that it made the handling FANTASTIC by replacing the T32 tires with michelin PR5 's. These tires make QUITE a noticeable difference in the mountain passes which probably make up about 65% of my riding.. A warning, DUMP THE T32's as fast as you can. They harden, loose their shape & over work the suspension because of balance issues. I visit quite regularly in the upper 160 - 190km/h range & those Bridgestone tires are rubbish! My fork oil has worn a bit because of balancing issues. I always check the balance when i remove worn tires to see how far they have gone out.., & these T32's in my experience have been shocking to say the least!!! DO NOT PUT BRIDGESTONE TIRES ON YOUR BIKE!!! Matt you have purchased a GREAT BIKE & i think with some basic upgrades it is a keeper for sure. Easy bike to live with & well worth the money.. especially with bike prices becoming more & more ridiculous as time goes by..

Completely agree, came from a VFR 1200 myself (simply incredible bike) The Tracer 9 is just awesome and fun and easy to own Surely one of the most competent and true "Do it all" bikes if you accept that i cant do do dirt. Touring - check Sport / odd trackday - check Daily riding - check 2up riding - check Dope machine :)

Having had the 2021 MT-09 for almost a year now, I can totally agree with the bang for the buck feeling. Great review and advice, years of reviewer wisdom in such detail is gold dust for an owner. I cracked a smile when you discussed the suspension setup because although I am a complete novice with suspension tuning I'd come to basically the same corrections on the rear shock and feelings on mine and it's now considerably smoother through mid corner. Now to try drive mode 2 to see if the throttle response is better as I've found 1 a little too snatchy at slow speeds and a bit on/off.

Great review of a great bike. I’ve had an Mt07, mt09, mt09sp, mt10sp. I’m 75kg with gear and had problems setting the suspension up to suit me. I hoped the sp versions would work better but they never felt right. So I bought an 890 duke r (current bike). That bike brings a whole different level of suspension performance. However, I loved the mt09 package which I found more playful and less committed than the KTM. If I went for the 2024 mt09 I’d be very tempted to forego the SP version, buy the standard one and fit a Maxton rear shock and have them revalve and spring the forks. They do everything customised and machine everything in-house apart from the springs which are externally sourced. I’ve only ever heard and read great things about their products and services and half the Isle of Man TT racers can’t be wrong!

Front i increaase rebound 2 klicks and decrease compression damp by 1 . Now it feels öhlins like 🙏💥. Very Funbike indeed . Easy to forgett to put in M fick you want wheelies i noticed 😳. Keep it up 👍

I've got the 2021 SP and appreciate the suspension detail. I've found the SP quite firm at the back and quite soft at the front. Felt it needed quite a lot of front preload to get correct sag figures and ride height. And also more low speed compression damping on the front to stop the dive for my 80kg of rider and gear. Whereas, the rear seems like it needs a tiny bit more weight to be happy even with zero preload and softened damping. It works well when set up but it's odd that the spring rates seem mismatched. The other thing that made a world of difference for me was flipping the bar risers 180deg to bring the bar 9mm forward and 4mm higher which I think is definitely worth trying for 6+ft-ers. Main complaint for me is the ABS, I find it too intrusive for really hard braking. Whatever ABS mode it's set to, it seems to cut in to stop rear wheel lift even when the front still has plenty of grip. Best accessories for me - heated grips, comfort seat, tank grips and SW-motech street rack and abs rear bag.

@@amococ2487 With hard progressive front braking in the dry (without ABS) the rear wheel will lift before the front loses grip. The MT09 will engage the front ABS before this happens though so the rear never lifts

Yeah, I don't think the Italians could make an ugly bike if they tried. And the Japanese don't seem to have to try too hard at all, do they? But... although I realise it's not exactly a great looker in a traditional kind of way, I'm actually quite fond of the 09, especially with the little screen I've fitted to mine.

I noticed people walking by going out of their way to look at it. The bike draws a crowd, and positive comments continuously. Hi Matt. Congrats on your new machine. Great to hear your thoughts on the bike and I hope it gives you much entertainment and fun on your travels around Europe. I have just got myself a shiny new '22' Tuono 1100 [the standard model] in a nice gun metal grey colour. Loving it riding around the roads here in Basse Normandie. I found the base model more comfortable and accommodating with it's higher bars and taller screen than the Factory [ I am 59 now with creaky wrists] and a damn sight cheaper too so it was a no brainer for me. If your up this way give us a shout and we could meet up for a drink or two. Oh and what are your thoughts on the new XSR900? I quite like it [especially in the Sarron/Gauloises blue] but that seat would have to go. Anyway mate take care and ride safe.

The XSR is more expensive as well, and money was tight with this purchase! Maybe an Aprilia in a year or two...

I own a XSR900 since 2021. Incredible bike. The engine is brutal, very versatile and always beefy and prone to accelerate. I do 60 mpg. The secret of the XSR900 and MT09 is their light weight and fabulous engine. Quality is fantastic and my only complaint is comfort: stiff suspension and hard seat. Service costs are reasonable and reliability must be top notch (mine has 15.000 km with no issues). Awesome value for money.

Hi there, l’m an Englishman in France like you, located just outside Avignon. I have the same bike as you, the Storm Fluo is the best colour. Completely agree with everything you say. With the suspension , I have like you, gone up one notch and opened the rebound 1.5 . At the front I have added preload so 4 rings are showing and increased rebound 4 clicks in from standard. She now turns like a fly and tracks a line to perfection. If ever you want to hook up for a ride give us call, been riding around the Languedoc and Camargue for years and know some pretty good roads. Thanks Mr. Big. I too have ridden, and continue to ride (thanks to the job) amazingly powerful bikes but have come to realise that the goldilocks zone is about 110 to perhaps 130hp. It's plenty, it's still frighteningly fast, and in the right hands down a demanding back road it's as quick as any 200hp machine. And it's invariably lighter and more rewarding to ride 99% of the time.

As a former MT-09 owner who rode the stock, Öhlins upgraded stock and SP versions extensively (all set up by a suspension specialist), a street rear shock and a fork oil + spring swap will solve 80-90% of the problems on the stock bikes.

OK Matt... now you've got me thinking! I have the second generation MT-09. By that time Yamaha had much improved the fueling of the original but the suspension is lacking. In saying that I've got a couple of years on you and definitely less likely to explore the limits of the bike. I was thinking of a change but now you have me thinking that I should probably hang onto my MT-09 and invest in a suspension upgrade. The CP-3 engine is a peach... albeit that mine is the slightly smaller 115bhp version. It's certainly more than quick enough. The quick shifter is "up" only on my version but works very well... and, as you commented, even low rev. If others want to make reasonably priced suspension mod suggestions... I'd be interested. Thanks for great review... Alan

Ok I’m 71 and just had to see what all the fuss was about with all the fancy electronics before it was times up for me. Rear suspension tired up preload one segment. Better but I’ll be upgrading the unit. My bike has been chipped it’s the blue one on bhp. Uk. Put 5 bhp on and smithed things out. I’m an ex motorcycle courier that averaged 2000 miles per Wk in my late 40’s. Just to put a slant on the experience side of things. So absolutely is the best bang for your bucks. Amazing electronics give confidence whilst riding hard. Three into one is the business that I fitted. Upgrade to sintered pads 👍comfort seat was a must. To say my backside was sore after 70 miles is an understatement. So I’ve spent a bit on upgrades just to fit the big air filter element. It’s in the garage waiting 😂but I’ve got two other older bikes zzr 1100 and Aprilia tuono it’s the one I go to. It’s on u tube bhp uk.

I have had 2 different years of this bike, one was a 2014 FZ09 which I regrettably sold and the other a 2016 FZ09. I have to say that I liked the 2014 model better, for some reason the brakes felt so good on it. After a year, I put an Ohlin’s rear shock on it and it and that made the ride and handling so much better and had an Arrow full exhaust that sounded so good. The 2016 was great, but not as good as the 20014 don’t if the 2014 was put together better. I put an Akrapovic full exhaust, which sounded good but not as good as the Arrow exhaust, steel braided brake lines, an ecu flash which made the throttle much smoother and ran cooler. Sadly I sold the 2016, because my back just didn’t let me ride without having a lot of pain if I rode longer than 10 minutes. But these bikes keep your interest because the engine is so good, don’t have to rev it very far to feel really good acceleration, it is an engine that will let you enjoy, in whatever mood you are in.
