I got my 2022 MT-09 SP about 6 months back. I'm in northern California. It is either raining, flooding, or freezing out so all I can do is watch other people's vids of them having fun on their bikes. (It's my first bike, and I'm 65 years old...)

sad to here about your weather. I am 50 and just got back into bikes after like 20 years.. Had trail bikes and ended up on a poor handling 600 that tryed to kill me a few times. Rode my brothers Suzuki RF900 and realized there are way better and more fun/safer bikes around. Life and kids kicked in, sold bike. Just got (after a wait) 23 MT-09 SP. Love it. Been a Daylie for two months in our Australian summer and awesome. As a first bike at 65 it will be a challenge. Mode 3 might be the go for a bit, but that still has some punch. You may have more control and restraint but trust me..........she is a stupid teenager and makes you do silly things.....................but soooooooooooo FUN. A good tip is learn the rider aids and use the M (manual) mode and put all on 3(TC/SC/LIF) most intervention until you get the feel of things. Even with this setting in mode 3 the front will lift a reasonable amount in a smooth and controlled fashion if you give it a fist full in first and possibly second depending on your speed and eagerness. Don't get me wrong, One of the best things about the bike is its smooth and tame, with light handling around town, but stable and a beast when the road opens up. I would say this to all new owners......respect this beautiful work of engineering and you will have a long and rewording relationship with her. Be a dick, and you will wreck her as she will you!.................have fun........ride as safe as you can.........trust me, you will enjoy. You, as i am, are a lucky man.

Excellent comparison! I have the F900XR and it really has loosened up beyond 5000 miles and stopped using oil. The 900 twin is a tight engine from the factory but I bought the bike for it's handling and as 1 bike for everything including touring. I keep thinking about trading up but then I go for a ride and just love the thing... It's not the best at anything really but is good enough at everything once I got the seat re-padded. It's booked in for a re-map at the end of the month so I will see how many horses BMW stashed away behind the electronic throttle.

I’m currently cross shopping these two bikes as an upgrade from the 390 Duke. I’m leaning towards the F900R for the tech, the sound and torque from that 270° inline twin, the looks and the comfort. I’m an intermediate rider and I wouldn’t be able to fully utilise the power of the MT09 other than in a straight line so absolute power isn’t really a selling point for me. I like the fact that the F900R has a meaty low-medium RPM power band. They say that is has 87Nm even at 4,500 RPM whereas I’ve seen other reviewers say that the MT09 is asleep below 6,000. You can even see that on the dash how the RPM is shown in white until you hit 6k and then it turns green. I think the F900R is a do-it-all bike that can be sporty, commute, tour, carry a passenger comfortably and even has built in pannier racks. If you want a toy motorcycle for ripping up the streets on the weekend then the MT09 sounds like the sportier ride but if you want a bike that you can do anything on then F900R sound like the right bike. Currently the F900R with all the bells and whistles is on sale in NZ for a few hundred less than the MT09 SP and I am leaning towards that. Only problem is that there’s a Yamaha dealer just down the road but the nearest BMW dealer is about 3 hours away. I’ve got time to think coz I’m still saving and the Yamaha dealer has a rental fleet so I’ll take the MT09 for a ride once I have saved the money. Watch this space. Also I wonder what equipment is fitted to the BMW when they quote 211kg wet weight. It has a centre stand which probably weighs at least 7-10kg given that it’s made of steel. Also it has built in pannier racks and that ugly GPS mount on the triple clamp so if you took those things off maybe it would be close to 200kg which is not bad. It also has about 30kg higher payload limit so you can fit two people and some bags and the frame can handle it.

I have the F900R and I am happy with it. It has better touring capacity than the MT-09 which for "1 bike in the garage" is a big plus - better wind protection for the lower body, cruise control, center stand, multiple luggage options both standard and aftermarket and very good fuel economy. The rear ABS can be deactivated like on the KTM by the way - the Dynamic Plus mode has settings for throttle, traction control and ABS. Another bike in the class is the Ducati Monster.

Test rode an F900XR last year and was unimpressed, mostly with the bland engine. I test rode an MT-09 a few weeks ago and it is hands down a better bike to me, if not for the lively overall character then for the engine alone. I also agree that the MT-09 quickshifter is one of the best, at least in my experience. I have definite plans to own an MT-09 SP in the not too distant future. That is, once dealers in my area in the west coast USA stop gouging their customers with excessive markups and so-called "fees". Now that the pandemic shortage of latest generation MT-09 models seems to have abated, I am already seeing dealers advertising leftover new 2022 and even an odd 2021 model MT-09 claiming (finally) no additional markup or dealer fees. Better times are coming for us USA buyers on the US west coast I think. For what it's worth, I own a 2020 R1250R which I bought new with all the bells and whistles. It's a great all around sporty bike with lots of torque, great big twin sound (with a Remus slip on), good handling and, all that plus all day comfort. I plan to keep the R1250R for quite some time but I am really looking forward to adding an MT-09 SP to my garage. As for the F900XR, there was almost nothing about it that I found interesting. Perhaps unfairly, the fact that I already have an R1250R made the F900XR seem that much more lackluster.

Excellent comparison and too funny. I’ve somewhat narrowed my own choices down to these two; however, there is something you hint at here that I think gets completely and utterly lost by most everyone reviewing/comparing the F900R, this especially to other bikes in the range. It is vastly more of an all around “R”oadster than any of these other bikes. It screams it, in fact, with cruise control, nav, SOS, etc. It’s almost a little wily brother to the R1250R and like the bigger sibling, it seems perfectly willing to put on a screen and head off on a voyage, this where even with the a screen, the other bikes in the class still seem a little like toys.

I have owned a BMW R1150GS for a about 12 years and it was about 10 years old when l bought it. I always thought it was a bit breathless at the bottom, and so l asked my mechanic about removing the Catalytic converter (which in Australia is not a legal requirement), yes he said just take it off and keep the standard can. Well if l didn't think l had new bike. I almost need launch control, whereas previously the clutch had to be slipped to get it off the mark or fear stalling it. It made me realise that this engine was probably designed for an exhaust system without the Cat. The character of the engine is totally different. It starts pulling straight away and just keeps producing torque everywhere in the rev range, indeed l cannot tell when the power comes in it is such a seemless experience. More power more torque, everywhere and it is like a hooligan. I wonder then what f900r might be like without its cat.

As good as the CP3 engine is, in stock form, there's a LOT of factory restrictions hampering the real potential. Full exhaust and quality ECU flash is the only way to uncork the actual Yamaha goodness, instead of getting 65% of what you paid 100% for. The parallel twin BMW on the other hand, I think the Tuono 660, GSX-8S, Honda Hornet 750, Duke 790 probably make as much or more power with less displacement, certainly weighing less.

IMO the MT-09 is the most under rated bike of any class and the £1,000 extra for the Ohlins shocked SP is superb value but if you liked the earlier street triple RS just wait till you ride the 2023 RS, it's a massive improvement.

Well, I'll be damned, just about the review I was looking for. Would've been better if instead of the MT an XSR would've been used ;-) I'm about to sign for an F900R but something keeps me from doing it. I guess it's the engine thing. Owned 2 mt09's and 2 tracers, absolutely the best engine around and a perfect QS. Sadly that's about it. The dash is so bad, brakes are so so and the suspension really sucks. I'll be buying either the F900r or the new XSR900 (and hope this one does corner with confidence), or maybe I'll stick with my beloved 1000SX for another year

3 years ago, I was looking at the BMW but it was the dealer himself who advised not to go for it (avoiding a ton of realizability issues) - decided to go for the SP and never looked back. Done some fuss-free 33‘000 kms since. With a few mods to lose weight, upgrade braking power (track / road pads, steel-braided braking lines) and increase power / optimize fuelling it is a force up and down the mountain passes in the European Alps 😎🏁🏁

But if it makes you feel your going fast and doing the right thing, then good for you, enjoying the ride is what its all about. Next time your out and about on a naked, try keeping your knee tucked in.

It’s adequately powered, very nimble, lots of decent tech(depends what you ask for) and a decent fuel consumption. I test rode one from BMW motorrad Cape Town and I’m telling you now this bike is awesome. It doesn’t have the wow factor the MT has without a doubt but then again I’m not a speed freak or anything 😂 Il have me a poor man’s BMW Anyday. MT-09 all the way. I spent a lot of time riding and mulling over most bikes common and available in my part of the USA in the 750 to 900 class. I wanted a fun street ripper and something that plays well in the corners. And I wanted raw. I have a 2018 Goldwing Tour 6MT, so cruise control, heated this or fancy that wasn't a concern. And at 6'-3" @ 260 lbs so no matter how good the suspension is on any given bike if I get to pushing hard it will have to be upgraded regardless how good it is for a 140 to 180 lb rider. So why blow the money on it if it's just going on the shelf, in the trash or sold on. So I settled in on MT-09 Base Model and waited for the deal to come to me. It took the better part of a year then the deal presented it's self and I bought one. Only issue so far were crap head bearings yamaha used. It was wanting to shake it's head in anger. Wasn't the suspension, tires and it didn't need a damper. It just needed a proper set of head bearings that could be setup correctly and that would hold the setup. I've been on the street 49 years and the MT-09 is everything I wanted and then some. It's the most impressive standard motorcycle I have ever owned. It has brought back to me the basic essence of riding. It can be tame or wicked. It's all up to me and what I do with the controls on the bars.

I've ridden both of these bikes in their adventure touring trim for a fair few miles, the F900XR and the Tracer 9 GT, and both those models have the same engines in the same state of tune. Honestly there is absolutely NO way that Yamaha 900 triple is anywhere near the claimed values, the F900XR is way punchier and pulls much harder up to about 10k at which point you use the far superior quickshifter (disagree with you on 6:04, yes it's smooth but you need near inhuman control to stack the gears like you can on a BMW or KTM) and you're already on the relative tsunami of power. The soundtrack of the F900XR is also way more exciting, being a 270° twin, even with stock endcan that bark is glorious. The Tracer 9 in all aspects is way too flat, there is no emotion to the torque curve, it's just a flat and steady pull, it's sound is plain as soon as you open the taps all the way to the red line no change in tone or emotion. The electronics are very good on both bikes, I'm partial to the BMW system over the Yamaha but those 2 bikes, the F900XR is more of everything for sure. It handles better, even if the tracer's ride is a little nicer (too soft for when you push on) the brakes are in another world to the there really is no comparison off the spec sheet as you say. Now i'm sure the engine and braking characteristics are completely relevant to both the naked bikes too, and I just hate this bandwagon saying "yamaha MTs best bikes hurr durr" it's gotten real old since the MT-07, then the MT-09 then the MT-10, sure they wheelie, but all of them are frankly garbage in their respective categories especially when put up against even base model BMWs, and the price gap is not really there either... I particularly disdain the MT-10 because it brings nothing good to the table apart from wheelies, and in that 1000cc hypernaked category, there's even better bikes for that. The MT-10 base model had to have been one of the WORST bikes I've ever ridden whilst still being a high end bike. Throttle was jerky in anything apart from rider mode 2, suspension so bad even after setting up the front felt like washing out every turn, brakes might as well have been a suggestion, clunky shifter, horrible grabby clutch, lets not even talk about the attrocious fuel economy and range, and caveat here, sure, you don't need hundreds of miles of range from a naked fun bike, but 80 miles to fuel light at 25mpg is NOT okay, how come KTM get over 45 from their significantly bigger and more powerful 1290?? Once you're done away with the horrific handling, brakes, and so on, you're left with a shredded rear tyre at 3000 miles (my XR that's faster and with more power and more weight could easily do 5k on the same sets). Just a horrible bike glorified by media because it can lift the front end if you whack the throttle... Anyway sorry for the tangent, but I feel like this is 100% applicable to the vast majority of yamaha's lineup, whether we're talking MTs, R7,R1s Tenere 700s, whatever, they all have 1 aspect they are good in and are otherwise crap value.

The tracer was amazing for everyday use though, comfy to commute on, warm heated grips, good suspension for bumps, and a predictable power delivery with enough get up and go for easy overtakes, but as a passion choice? nah.
