Woodturning - Escape from the Drying Box!!!!
Тәжірибелік нұсқаулар және стиль
A month or so ago I roughed out a poplar bowl ( • Woodturning: Poplar - ... ). Since then, it's been in my super-high-tech drying box (cleverly disguised as a cardboard box with a fan and a light bulb). And it's finally dry! Now I have to figure out what to do with it.

One really good thing about your videos is that you say and show what you are doing. You show how you present the tool to the wood, how you use cutting tools and scraping tools in the correct sequence and tell about such things as speed, tearout drying and rounding off of of the dried piece. Masterful, thanks.

It seems to me that KZread has been putting a lot more ads in videos than they used to. I can turn that off completely (thereby killing my somewhat meager revenue stream), but I can’t just limit the ad inserts to a smaller number. Thanks for putting up with the ads to watch my videos, Jim!

I know from experience that it's hard to get the vines to wrap around the edge whilst looking natural....great job and entertaining video....take care...All the best.....Andy

I like the art work you did on this rim. Very nice! Did you dry this bowl for a hole month with the bulb lamp on all the time? 😳
@RickTurnsWoodturning

I dried for 13 days in the drying box, with the light on - it’s a 53 watt bulb. Then it was sitting on my workbench for another week or so, during which it lost another 5 grams. Thanks for watching, Frank.
Rick. Another quality piece. Hey question. I'm on a budget and picked up a delta 46 715. It's a 14" swing. It has reeves pully system. I needed something more than my nova midi. It's getting tired of t he large pieces I'm outing on it. Had a few chuckle, did I buy scrap iron or a working lathe? All the inexpensive new lathes rpms start at 600, too fast for a piece out of round. The delta grys down to 350. Your thoughts?
@RickTurnsWoodturning
3 жыл бұрын
Hi, Frank. Looks like the specs on this are decent. If it goes as low as 350 rpm, you shouldn’t have much trouble with an out of round blank. I can usually start turning at around 400. If it’s vibrating too much, you can use a chainsaw or bandsaw to remove more stock to get less vibration. You can also add a shelf between the legs and load it down with sandbags which will help when you’re roughing down an out-of-round blank. My first full size lathe was a Jet 14-42, 14” swing, Reeves pulley system. I put around 400 lbs of sand on it. I used it for 10 years or so. Then I sold it to a friend, who is still using it. The only information I could find on the Delta’s speed said the top end was 600 rpm, which seems pretty low - maybe that was a mistake in the review I was reading. 1000 rpm seems more likely and more useable. Hope it works out well for you.
Wow! Rick, that really is beautiful. I love the wood burning and dye. Who do you get that type of dye from? I am interested in giving it a try. Thanks again Rick for another entertaining and informative video. Stay safe
@RickTurnsWoodturning
3 жыл бұрын
I think I bought that dye from Craft Supplies, but it's been so long now that I don't clearly remember. Amazon now has a wide selection of wood dyes. This dye is water-based, but I've found that alcohol-based dyes seem to work better. Thanks for watching, Dan.

@@RickTurnsWoodturning Thanks Rick. I looked it up on Craft Supplies and they do have a good selection of alcohol based dye. Thanks for the information, much appreciated.
Enjoyed it Rick Very nice bowl Great job on the vines, I have been working on one of those drying boxes but I ended up making something to hang on the wall thought I would make one to dry a few bowls in the size is 67x18x20, built a cabinet and wanted to ask ya if I could put the light 💡 bulb on the inside since the space is larger, And also what size fan should I get since the space is a little bigger or will the one ya used would it be ok to use?
@RickTurnsWoodturning
3 жыл бұрын
Hi, Kimsey. I used to have a drying box the size of a small cabinet, though not as big as the one you’ve made. . It was made of MDF. I put a ceramic light fixture inside, with a plastic cage protecting the bulb. The bulb was positioned on the inside right behind the fan. The wiring to the bulb (and light switch) were on the back of the box. With a box the size that you made and if it’s not made of cardboard, I’d suggest using one 100 watt incandescent bulb. But if you put in two, I’d suggest using 60 watt bulbs, and turning one off for the first two days of drying. If it dries too fast when it is at its wettest, the chance of cracking is higher.

question: isn't the ring tool more dangerous, in case of catches?
@RickTurnsWoodturning

I don't think so. As long as the ring is held vertically, it doesn't catch at all. If you use it horizontally, watch out! But I've found it very easy to use. Thanks for watching, Gabriel.
