Hi Jim. Banksia is pronounced as BANK C AH. .. You have done a beautiful job of one of our national botanical treasures. Banksia plants were named after Sir Joseph Banks , botanist on HMS Endeavour captained by James Cook in 1770.

BTW, by the time that the damaged Endeavour limped into what is now known as Botany Bay, the crew were on "hard tack" rations, having run out of fresh & preserved meat and vegetables. At that time "Botany Bay " was very different Sir Joseph Banks, the official Botanist was ashore collecting plant specimens, Captain Cook had the task of feeding his men as quickly as possible. He saw thousands of Stingrays in the shallows, easy targets for boat-hooks and had not yet named it Botany Bay. In his original journal, you can see where "Stingray Bay" was replaced with "Botany Bay", due to the "other world" Flora & Fauna being found! Interesting!

@Sprague Wood turning, l liked the Banksia Pod Vase video and I tried Pinecones as a vase & I'm very happy how it came out & gave it to my wife so she could give it to her grandma as a birthday present! Her grandma had a beautiful vase and someone broke into her home & stole everything and even the vase her late husband gave her & found old photo scrap book pictures and saw the same vase that was taken from her! And I spent many nights planning on how to recreate the same vase and that was a lot of work & my wife wasn't even upset or mad that I spended more time in my workshop and to make it short!!...the vase came out beautiful and it's sitting in the dining room in our home! Her grandma is now living with us and she can't continue being by herself and I suggested that she lives with us and my wife thought that was a great idea and loves spending time with her & going shopping and going to the hair salon and what ever makes her happy & it's totally fine with me!!

For me the key to resin/wood turning is the amount of resin vs. wood. Usually with banksia pods there is more resin than pods, because they use whole pods. By cutting them into chunks the relationship and the look is entirely different. Great choice on your part. Thanks again for a great video.

@@MeadowDay There used to be 3 trees on a walk I used to do with the dog, the woody remains of the flower cone used to end up being littered on the ground, we do have some fabulous native trees and flora. Sadly those trees succumbed to flooding, got waterlogged and died. I did polish up the woody seed cones/pods to add to native display, yes I agree they are very unusual wood.

I like the fact that you use carbide tools and do such a beautiful job. It seems so many turners look down their noses at carbide tools, but you show it's not the tool but the artist that makes a project. What a beautiful project it is too.

You are 100% correct, carbide is an aid, it’s up to the turner to make it happen. I am a firm believer that if your going to be a turner you need to master the gouge but when it comes to resin, carbide is where it at! Thanks!

I agree. The iridescent sheen created by the pearl colors is fantastic and makes everything you create look even more amazing with a little touch of magical. I like how the resin settled and made the green float all through the red and just create a really organic transition between the two colors. Btw, the voids were not caused by the seeds not being there, they were caused by material obstruction in the pods. Basically, the pods had holes surrounded by pod. You'll find that a lot with parts of the plants that aren't weight-bearing like stems, trunks and branches. Chances are, those voids were much more wet than other parts of the pod, so the drying process shrunk the material down so much that a noticeable void was created. Btw, trimming a foam piece can cause it to leave pieces behind. There is a much rarer risk of factory-fresh foam pieces doing this, but a home trim will increase that risk by a LOT. I think part of the problem is that the exterior of a foam piece always looks different from the interior, and exposing that interior exposes a weaker, more void-filled part of the foam and causes it to fail more.

This piece makes me think of what Earth must have been going through when the "Big Bang" was on the cooling side of creation. Still remnants of lava-like heat ready to get upset if it wasn't able to be left alone to just chill, and cool down in it's own way, in it's own time. As if there was life still perculating ...much like a fine cup of coffee in old fashioned coffee pot, on a campfire. Just let it finish "brewing", and Viola!! This is what you'd see. Creation on the chilling side of what just happened. LoL grin 😊. Yer making me think and see so many different things in your artwork, it's great to imagine such things. My experience, from building a 23' wood and epoxy boat, is that foam and epoxy application don't mix. Microfiber applicator is required. Try applying with a chip brush and then smooth with microfiber cloth. I used a microfiber roller and then tipped smooth with a brush. Also, you might want to thin the top coat of epoxy as it self levels without bubbles a lot easier.

the author does like to from scratch, shaping and trimming wood from large blocks into fine finished products. kzread.infoUgkxD-QRFQz730FJEh4f9BYSf-nkIMIC9hL_ as another reviewer mentioned, most projects require a lot of high-dollar equipment that most of us dont have the room or budget for.
