    From what I have read, the lanky boxer with the sleeveless shirt went to a wing chun practice to see what it was about. He is a local champion and was called out by the wing chun practitioner. He wanted to test that fighting on the center line is better than fighting w angles and the boxer disagreed. You also didn't show the part where the boxer knocked the wing chun fighter out.

  • @DavorBa

    @DavorBa

    5 жыл бұрын

    Fighting on the center line sounds great on paper, but in practice it fails. It's just too obvious and predictable. Pure Wing Chun fighter can either go forward or backward, using only straight punches and kicks sometimes. Boxer uses angles, sidesteps, jabs, round punches, hooks, shoulder rolls, slips etc. and most importantly, he spars regularly, unlike most WC practitioners . In almost every video I saw, WC practitioner stands in place, passively waiting for incoming attack, which by itself is bad, but coupled with what I said above, makes it much worse. It is no joke or exaggeration when someone says: "WC should be practiced with something else to get the most out of it". WC trapping, elbows and forward pressure principles are great and they would compliment boxing and/or bjj greatly. The thing that holds WC down is it's one dimensional straight punches and robotic footwork. Those are the first thing that will go away if one combines WC with boxing.

  • @florisvanlingen

    @florisvanlingen

    5 жыл бұрын

    @@DavorBa well the centerline isnt a surface line on an oppinents body, its an axis going through a fighters head out of his bottom. In wing-chun you prefferably want to face your opponent whilst hes not facing you, this is the opposite of standing infront and going forwards and backwards. Tbh testing out centerline theory in a boxing contest is a no no since you will be out of range in which the context of centerline works for about 70% of the fight.

  • @DavorBa

    @DavorBa

    5 жыл бұрын

    @@florisvanlingen The centerline concept you described is used in William Cheungs Wing Chun (I trained it myself), and they sort of teach angling and going into attackers blind side, but, when you see them spar or when you spar with such a concept in mind, it just falls apart, because the other guys movement/reaction is always faster than your blindside flanking, and they end up doing classical kickbox but without hooks. If a wing chun practicioner cant test something out even against a boxer, a guy who only uses hands to punch, good luck doing it against an MMA fighter with even more tools at his disposal. I trained Cheungs WC for about 3 years, then I moved onto a Wing Chun (Samuel Kwoks) / Sanda hybrid, with regular sparring sessions and some basic takedown defense and I never looked back. It's hard for Wing Chun to survive alone, especially with the "dry" way it's being trained mostly nowadays. It needs to evolve to be more flexible and to hold its own against some popular martial arts that simply work. I have no problem being thought how to use hooks, uppercuts and round kicks along with my wing chun, as long as I'm given the choice to do what I'm most comfortable. But the problem are those people that say "thats modified Wing Chun, it hardly looks like the traditional stuff". Yeah, they kind of ridicule evolution.

    When a wing chung practitioners have a considerable amount of sparring, they will realize that there are better and more effective way to throw a punch and kick and when they do that ,they dont want to be Chuners anymore. That, i think is the reason why most of Kung fu styles dont spar or have very limited sparring lessons because Kung fu would lose a lot of students if they were allowed to test what they have learned.

    If that's what your sifu told you, then I'm sorry to say that he's an idiot! Some people believe it's better structure if you do that. This is dead wrong! Proper structure is when you're centred and there's almost a pulling up through the crown of your head. If you actually do this properly, your chin will be down. I know there are people who tell you to have all your weight or most of it on your back leg. Again this is dead wrong. If you do that, your balance and your power is badly compromised. It really doesn't matter what someone says. Just look at human anatomy and logic! Keep your chin down, your guard up, and move! Anyone who tells you to not do this clearly has no clue how to fight!

    Watch MMA fights and fighters like Conor McGregor actually apply a similar concept in guard. You see how McGregor likes to stick his hand out a lot? Not as a strike, but he'll stretch it out as a bait/feeler. The purpose of this is to bait a reaction from the opponent and to also make contact/bridge the gap. The purpose behind the outstretched arm in Wing Chun is exactly what these MMA fighters are doing when they stretch their arm out, it's just the MMA fighters do it better because they don't keep the arm static.

    If gloves do affect Wing Chun at all I'd guess it would be because WC spends a lot of time and focus on using touch over sight. The theroy being that you process touch faster, leading to quicker reactions. This is literally the central focus of Chi-Sao and is the reason higher-level practitioners will allow their gaze to slide out of focus when rolling hands. Now, sticking to an opponent who has any idea what they're doing is hard, which, IMO, is where it usually breaks down. But if gloves do interfere, that's probably why.

    I've been addressing the whole "boxing/MMA gloves" effect with my Sifu, and he pointed out something that was staring me right in the face: if your hands aren't free to do the usual trapping, then you use your wrists. This makes sense because when we do Chi Sao, we don't touch at the HANDS; we touch at the WRISTS. Having said that, I do agree with you: it does become a whole different game without gloves. Make no mistake: gloves only make you CHANGE your game; they don't destroy it completely.

    My father was a boxer that taught me and my brother how to fight... We sparred alot... That's how we learned! If we didn't slip, duck or move properly from a punch we'd get a bloody nose or knocked out/down.. Sure enough, I learned the hard way...my brother was older and whooped me often. I guess the most important thing I learned other than proper defensive movement was timing, precision, and how to properly sit down on a good punch to do some good damage. I sparred with TKD, Karate and Wing Tsun practitioners as a young teen and wrecked them because... I didn't get any real sparring until I met someone from the IMB academy with Dan Inosanto/Richard Bustillo... that's when I learned facets of Wing Tsun used in conjunction with boxing. Still, my boxing has served me well in addition to BJJ (everyone should be doing some form of submission anyway)... Straight Wing Tsun has been ineffective in my experiences with it as far as sparring. Besides, when sh#t hit the fan and I actually had to fight, nothing is better than knowing how to throw hard, fast and skillfully...

One of the many differences for me is that I tend to parrie and trap more with bare hands. I also throw more combinations bare handed instead of the mostly-throw-power-shots strategy I tend to fall back on with gloves.

    Here is the info on the fight from the first clip: "NMAL Free Style martial arts competition. Wing Chun (white singlet ) has 17 years wing chun experience has only fought in his own style tournament and has no other external tournament experience. The kickboxer has 6 years experience and has tournament experience. This is modified rules, full contact to the body, semi to the head and legs, sweeps are allowed, no knees or elbows. Belts are used for judging only, the belts do not represent the fights experience."

    Wing Chun has a form called '尋橋'Finding the bridge, which includes the technique of gripping kicks (with one hand at the below and then other on top then use Wing Chun kicks or chopping hand or whatever works) for like in the situation at 1:54. But the customary of 'lowering hands' and 'raising chin' (In Wing Chun, we emphasise the posture of leaning back of the body so it could be feeling awkward to do both at the same time) is a fatal problem. Another common problem is that in most Wing Chun Dojo, the teachers are emphasising the Wing Chun kick is too 'Deadly' due to it could easily break your partner's leg, which leads to a lack of kicking training, subsequently, lack of application.

    Problem with wing chug is that it lacks movement and angles. They tend to come straight forward and their stance is flawed. Making them easy to counter and bully with kicks. Their punches also lack stopping power which disfavors them in exchanges too

    i trained both, i sparred against boxers, i used both styles and i put up a much better fight with boxing, wing chun leaves u too stiff open and predictable, if any mma fighter trains wing Chun for a year, he will know all of their flaws and work against them, when fighting a wing chunner rule number 1, try to keep distance with kicks and step in step out punches, rule number 2, use alot of kicks, rule number 3, if u get close, try clinching or takedowns, dont stand in their short punch distance. rule number 4, have ur arm block ready to cancel their chain punch combos. rule number 5 try to use feints to distract them into parrying early and try to avoid staying in their centre line

    1. Wing Chun is ridiculously disadvantaged by gloves. Same with Silat, 5 ancestors, Pak Me, Tai Chi, and basically anything with finger techniques, trapping, or push hands concepts. Most affected are probably any "internal" martial arts that transmit chi primarily through the hands and forearms, and gloves interfere. 2. the chin being up can help occasionally with balance. If the hands are up and there is good head movement, it has few drawbacks as long as the chin is tucked at the right moment. However, chin tucked is a GREAT boxing habit with few drawbacks too.

    They should be getting into the opponent from word go. Most seem not to know this basic thing of Wing Chun fighting. If you hang back, you are dead, you will be kicked or taken down in seconds. The straight line is deliberate, its to get into and control the straight distance to your opponents body , where the vital organs are. Its called the centre line control and is a basic Wing Chun philisophy.

    50k3r2 There are two big drawbacks in WC today. The first is common to most Kungfu students who spend all their time in the gym training instead of fighting. Fighting teaches you how to apply what you have learnt. Otherwise you are like a doctor who passed his exams but has never seen a patient! Back in China till the thirties, Kungfu was a living practical fighting art. It was battle tested in street and competitions so that only the best survived. All that is gone today. The second is the massive popularity of WC movies which has created a huge market for WC teachers. These so called sifus are just students from the previous generation now calling themselves teachers. Crap turning out crap.

    It's the funniest thing because from what I have seen of WC philosophy, it's meant to be very offensive, pressure based. Like Pacquiao or Max Holloway styled fighting, non stop offense that shuts down an unprepared opponent, yet none of them practice or know how to do it in sparring/fighting, they go defensive and wait. It's like driving a stick shift car or cooking a dish. You can read all the books or be taught the theory, but unless you practice it for real, you won't know how to do it.

    I think the real issue is that if you study a "style" there are techniques to the style and things that, if you do, "that's not the true style" so you limit yourself both in what you do and what you get used to seeing. A person that fights MMA has to be ready for anything he sees and can respond in any way that works (or learn it doesn't work the hard way). If I know your "style" I have a clue presumably what you have trained most and also what you have likely ignored; that has to be an advantage. In the 21st century, fighters have seen Wing Chun in movies if not on video, so there is a bit of a disadvantage especially if the MMA guy knows ahead of time. This is not to make an excuse for wing chun, but to point out the disadvantage of being a proponent of a "style" versus begin able to train more holistically. it's like being focused on a subset of techniques versus being a generalist: if it falls within your strength, you might have an advantage, but if your adversary can avoid your strengths, you might be in for a long day!

    I think it's sbout range and space. Wing chun is good when you're in a small space where not much big movement is allowed such as high kick, spinning kick etc. There's a reason why it is developed by the previous people. You just have to know each martial arts specific designed for what situation. There's certain martial arts for slippery area, for small area or for large space. You just have to be humble and not bragging that your martial arts is the best

    It seems that lack of initiative is another common thing among Wing Chun practitioners. Chi Sao and stuff is great, but is pretty hard to win by only responding to attacks and not attacking yourself. They basically give the opponent advantage of the element of surprise, no wonder they get their asses kicked.

    When I started taekwondo and judo 1982 I was so sure that taekwondo was better than whatever you can think of. When I got older I recognized that it wasn't really so. And now I'm a little bit back again. I mean for an individual wing chun can be the best. Maybe he would suck in judo, karate, kung fu or whatever but be really good at wing chun!?! And my point is simply that its better to do any sport than non at all. In my case... In my 47 yr when I have had no option but to fight for whatever reason it usually ends up on the ground... A couple of punches and down we go wrestling on the ground so... For me judo wasn't "cool" when I was younger but it has been the best Martial art for me. Understand that the video is from a sport angle but anyway... ☺

    People don't realize half the criticisms that they think are exclusive to Wing Chun...aren't. For example, let's say a Wing Chun practitioner wins a fight by knocking someone out with a hook punch. People think Wing Chun is only straight punches (SIDE NOTE: it's not), so they say, "That wasn't real Wing Chun." However, if a Wing Chun person fights a Jiu-Jitsu opponent, and their Wing Chun LOOKS like Wing Chun, and they win, people say, "Yeah well...that guy wasn't using real Jiu-Jitsu." Or the Jiu-Jitsu guy was tired, or he had a cold, or he was upset because his girlfriend dumped him, or he stubbed his toe on his coffee table that morning so that owee on his foot made him unable to fight to the best of his ability. See how that is a "wanting it best of both worlds" mentality? If the Wing Chun guy wins, then it was because he wasn't doing real Wing Chun OR it was because the other guy must have been a crappy fighter. Yet you NEVER hear this stuff if a Tae Kwon Do person beats a grappler. For some reason, Wing Chun is the "red-headed stepchild" of the martial arts world.

    I really don't understand how some people don't have the commonsense. When you fight, you should always keep your chin down, protect your face and your body with your elbows next to ur ribcage. Boxers, kickboxers, Muay Thai etc... they have an amazing stance when they fight. Always moving, Footwork, head movement and timing it's the key in a fight. You can't just stay in one place when you fight. You have to move around and find openings etc... Obviously the dude in the video doesn't know crap about real fighting. Unbelievable 🤦‍♂️

    In all these videos I never see any of the kung fu fighters fight like what you'd expect kung fu to look like, or use the moves you'd associate with it. Most either just flail like someone who has never been in a fight, or resort to a more conventional (but usually poorly executed) western boxing/kickboxing style; either way, nothing that resembles kung fu. The few that I've seen attempt (and I stress "attempt") to fight in their traditional kung fu stance and style give it up very quickly or just fail to do anything except eat punches and kicks. I'm convinced that kung fu is a completely useless martial art in terms of fighting. It's very aesthetically pleasing and is very graceful as an art form, makes for cool movie fight scenes, and of course it serves as good exercise, but that's about it.

    These guys suffer from a deeply rooted problem in wing chun today. Too many practitioners think that you have to “look” wing chun in order to be wing chun. The martial art is versatile in that it can be used both in sport and self defense, which are two totally different things. It’s not smart to only practice one kind of punch, which is what we see mostly from lots of wing chun- the consecutive straight punches known as “chain” or “roll” punches. Do you mean to tell me that you will never find a use for a cross, uppercut or hook?? It’s simply unrealistic to not train punching from all angles and not simply straight on. These guys would have done themselves more good if they practiced more footwork, sparring, and wing chun techniques from any other line of attack than ONLY the centerline.
