Xu Xiaodong vs Tai Chi - An In-Depth History As Told By Xu

    @@ejectedlol1070 Your practical hands method may be more effective than what we've seen thus far, but it doesn't negate that Xu Xiaodong was treated in bad faith and slandered. It is very disrespectful to any person, regardless of style. I am Chinese, I love kung fu, and I have a special interest in neijia. I've welcomed all styles in my club, and there's no claim of superiority for any style- I'll use tai chi with mma fighters, and they are impressed by how effective it is for their own styles. I'd gladly spar with xu xiaodong, openly in a friendly match with no ego, just respect for someone who also loves martial arts.

    Tai Chi is an art of very subtle refinement where one could potentially get frighteningly good at the push hands game. Many of these masters, being able to completely dominate their students under such conditions would mistakenly feel that they would be similarly unstoppable in a fight. While I firmly believe that there are many transferrable skills and qualities from Tai Chi, the fact is that it is now almost irrevocably styled as an 'old person' art, with very few practitioners keen to bridge the gulf between push hands skills and fighting/sparring. This results in the lack of awareness of the reality of combat in general.

    All the respect to Mr Xu Xiadong, He has the right to be angry, for all the bad publicity, the harrasment, and the bad treatment for the chinese goberment. I had learning Tai Chi for almost 15 years, and in all this time, never, never, I repeat, never I saw a Tai Chi sparring, or any of the másters speaking about fights or ultimate fighting skills, I had learn the good stuff for your health, and the great exercice that Tai Chi is, even I had learned a lot of Qigong, but, as I said before, never, never know about a guy using Tai Chi as a combat sport. I share the angry with Mr Xu, in this time in the Tai Chi comunity I knew many idiots that claims that they have powers, that they can speak with spirits, that they can even fly and all that nosenses, and, of course, the fucking Morons that claim they can beat up a bóxer, or a MMA fighter, or a Judoka with the supposed Tai Chi powers, and you know the out come from that bullshit. One chinese máster that I knew was asked about the combat of Tai Chi, and, wisely told us the fighting style from All Tai Chi stlyes are lost in this days, because, during the cultural revolution, thousands of máster were killed, a lot scape from China and went to América, south an the EEUU, but in that process, many culture and fighting style were lost forever. The Tai Chi we knew today is a watered vertion from that arts. Nonentheless, I defend Tai Chi as a health therapy, and a good exercise for all the ages, but this crap of mad people claming they can beat anyone with snail speed boxing movements must stop. And must stop all that black publicity to the really Tai Chi, come on, Is like yoga, or pilates, you can fight using pilates or stretching. But, until a one Tai Chi person, beats a MMA fighter in a públic fight, with Tai Chi skills, I Will belive in all that crap magic. Good videos, you're doing a great job to expose the bullshitdo in China, greatings from Colombia, south América. Thanks.

And joined tkd, my coach was straight up old school and my kicks were fast and quick and practiced a lot of form. But until I start going to the Muay Thai class. That’s when it changed everything. Leg kicks were heating my legs up and I didn’t know how to defend it and getting gassed from clinching, knee and livershot to the body in which opened my eyes to be rational. This is really interesting and you see it in the US too. Archie Bunker is kind of the archetype of the old guy with crazy obnoxious opinions that no one can change and everyone in the family tolerates (up to a point). The older generation also historically holds on to a lot of political power across many cultures. Challenging older people is fraught with moral dilemmas because (like children) we are obligated to protect them and to try and keep them from hurting themselves which can be a full time job. Having said that, Xu Xiaodong could use a PR man - I don't think he's helping himself by getting caught up in drama and raging out about this and I say that even though I completely agree with his position.

    Xu reminds me alot of my own martial arts trainer. Xu should forget these clowns however, they aren't real martial artist's. Unlike Xu though my trainer said there is no point in going around smacking people coz what happens if you kills someone? It should be enough that you train well for yourself and become confident in your skills. Trying to prove to every clown that you are good isn't the point of martial arts, it's for you to feel good not for others to see you are good....what's the point of they know you are good and then die, or get horribly injured? Unlike here on KZread with keyboard warriors hurting someone real bad doesn't feel good at all especially if they can't get up and need to go to the hospital....it's a terrible feeling.

    Regarding what you said at 12:00 i think there are people who are bad, look for a way out but that only hides how bad they are inside. Same thing with the church and all the perverts they are. Church doesn't make them perverted just hides their true nature. I respect the efforts of xu xiaodong trying to clean up fake martial arts however i recall an interview that kwoncicker and mike from hard2hurt had. Mike started up wanting to do something similar to xu xiaodong. However he quickly realized the people who actually took the fights were not the ones he was looking for. People put fake stuff out there don't take fights. People who get deluded by that people do. So Xu could fight 10-100 of those posers and it wouldn't matter. Because the guys he wants to beat up ain't the ones that are pulling the strings. They are the puppets. Well that's all in the past with the new legislation though so it's fine... hopefully.

    I originally was watching this for the martial arts content, but once the subject of accepting certain individual's bad behavior, simply because they happen to be older was brought up, I HAD to comment! ;-) One of my jobs is teaching fitness to senior citizens. Most of them, the majority, are nice people. But...there's always one in the group who's a selfish piece of work (as in any group.) Well, when I first started teaching more than ten years ago, I would tolerate it, because I was raised to automatically "respect" elders....without exception....no matter what....just because of their age. (It's not just a Chinese thing. We have it in Filipino culture, too. It might be an Asian thing, though my supervisor at the time, who also held that mindset, until a senior screwed her over with money, wasn't Asian, but she was highly religious, so that could also be a factor.) The problem was, that mindset made it impossible to teach class, because the one or two bad ones would be disruptive in class, and even would bully(!) the other classmates. That's right, don't think that just because these are adults that bad behavior goes away. Human beings, of any age, could be both wonderful...or horrible. It's only when I started approaching seniors with the same mindset that I would anyone else, respecting them if they're thoughtful and considerate, and telling them, "There's the door, you can leave!" when the (few) are being selfish, noisy, bossy, rude, or just plain bad, that my classes were run efficiently. Ironically, that's when my fitness classes started to grow (because who wants to be a part of a class where you can't actually participate without distractions?) Yeah, age should not be a factor in accepting, or checking, bad behavior. That mindset does no one any good.

    Such passion in Xu Xiao Dong. But I get it. He has a "target" on his back and everyone is gunning for him. And they will try to take any shot they can get. Even if it's a cowardly shot. They know Xu Xiao Dong is easy to piss off. All they have to do is lie, and he is compromised. An age old tactic. Piss off the enemy and let him make a mistake. Same here. But a pissed off Xu Xiao Dong is a force to be reckoned with in a fight no doubt. But if he can be antagonized to make a mistake and possibly get put in jail or something of that nature, then they win. Xu Xiao Dong needs to be smarter than them and remain calm.he's already proven their bullshido, and that infuriates them. So they are going to change the rules. Make him fight their fight. Don't take the bait. Fight them on your terms. They will come. Good luck Xu Xiao Dong, the world is watching. Good vid. Thank u

    Guess where I just came from. A young kung fu guy was beating up a jiu jitsu guy and kept getting stopped by the ref, and everybody was going, "these barbaric chinese guys just can't follow the rules". The disconnect here is there is no meeting of minds. They're talking past each other. The tai chi guy is thinking "spar by tai chi rules". Xu here just want to do his own thing. Cause tai chi rules are stupid and unrealistic. Yeah he's right. I don't know what Xu is trying to do. Most people outside China knows tai chi is exercise for old people. Not a real thing for fighting.

    This is pretty simple to conceive: -Westerners won't believe the Tai Chi guys or any of the traditional martial artists because we understand the concept of MMA -Chinese natives won't believe Xu because they are blinded by tradition and culture And a lot of people say "Xu should move to NA or someone else". Well, he would just get slandered non-stop by the people that are against him, most likely claiming that he was ran away from all their challenges. All in all, in the future I hope someone makes a movie out of him. Like Ip man style where he challenges all these Dojo's. It would be a great martial arts film without a doubt and can spread awareness to stop being scammed by these traditional martial artists who only know touchbutt yoga.

    I don't 100% agree with everything Xu says and does with regards to the TMA debate. But I do respect what he is doing and to a large extent I do agree with him. TMA does work for the guys who know how to fight and I'm sure there are TMA fighters who can take em like Yair Rodriguez or Ignacio Callponoch. Not to mention Yi Long. It just bothers me that he tries to convince people TMA sucks by fighting old frail non fighters who aren't trained for combat. I would love to see Xu beat up Steven Seagull.

    "TMA does work for the guys who know how to fight and I'm sure there are TMA fighters who can take em like Yair Rodriguez or Ignacio Callponoch. Not to mention Yi Long." The problem I have with this argument is that I think you're mis-attributing these people's fighting abilities to "traditional martial arts", when in fact the reason they can fight is mainly due to the fact that they all train with modern sportfighting methodologies, and the way they design their training is guided by modern sport science, not tradition. I couldn't find anything about Ignacio Callponoch, but Yair Rodriguez and Yi Long are both trained in modern sportfighting disciplines. Yi Long isn't a Shaolin monk and wasn't Shaolin trained; he cut his teeth at a modern Sanda program at a sports university: kzread.info/dash/bejne/k2eft9ahnNq7YqQ.html. And I very seriously doubt that Yair Rodriguez, being a professional fighter, devotes any amount of time to hitting makiwara boards, doing qigong exercises, practicing katas, drilling techniques endlessly on compliant ukes, or any of the other things that we commonly think of as "traditional martial arts" training methodologies. He trains with modern sportfighting camps run by modern sportfighting coaches who use modern sportfighting methodologies. "It just bothers me that he tries to convince people TMA sucks by fighting old frail non fighters who aren't trained for combat." That's not what he's doing at all, and I think it's disingenuous to frame it that way. Nobody held a gun to any of these so-called "masters'" heads and forced them to fight Xu. They instigated the challenges, they agreed to the terms of the fights, they willingly stepped into the ring/onto the mat, and they got beaten up by a younger and more athletic man because they vastly overestimated their unarmed combat ability. If you watch the video, Xu even says that he did everything he could to avoid fighting one of the "masters" in question in this video. Aside from that, it really isn't unreasonable for Xu (or anyone else) to take these masters up on their challenges. These aren't just random old guys off the street: they apparently have enough clout with their government and name recognition with the general public to reach a not-insignificant portion of the Chinese people, and they're using their notoriety to make the false claim that training the martial arts that they practice in the way that they practice them will give a person the ability to fend off someone significantly larger and more athletic than him or her in a physical confrontation. There's no reason why this claim should be respected and treated as true without evidence, and it's in no way "disrespectful" for anyone to demand evidence of these claims in the form of a physical contest with agreed-upon conditions. If you are angry about what happened to these guys, don't blame Xu: blame the masters' hubris and lack of anything resembling a level of skill or athleticism that would justify that hubris.

  • @jasonmartell7112

    @jasonmartell7112

    4 жыл бұрын

    @@christopherallan4298 I don't think we really disagree here. I know those guys can fight for the reasons you mentioned and not because of their TMA training. But their TMA still helps them a lot and makes them more fun to watch which is a huge benefit itself. These guys are fighting for entertainment purposes and others train as a hobby for fun. It's rarely for actual self defense and more for enjoyment. TMA is cool as shit even though it's way less effective. But the fighters who actually know how to fight but are also capable of using TMA in a fight are what make MMA worthwhile for a lot of people. These idiots getting their asses whipped by Xu are just that. I wasn't intending to defend them. And I think some of them get paid so it's a win win for them. I don't blame nor hate on Xu. I respect his not wanting to fight a 70 year old and it was bogus for them to mischaracterize it as Xu losing. The Chinese government was wrong as hell for everything they did to him. I respect what Xu is doing and bringing to the table. I just don't want people to think TMA can't work in a fight and I don't want it to go extinct. I want it to live on and improve without losing it's flashy excitement.

    The only reason why Xu Xiaodong is being villainized is because China is so insular that they try to perpetuate that the old ways are better than what the rest of the world has to offer. It's such a paradox that they have caught up and (some may say) overtaken much of the world in manufacturing and technology but are still so close minded. Not the fault of the people I'm sure. Just strict controls and lots of propaganda by the state government. I hope Xu Xiaodong knows and finds vindication in knowing that the rest of the martial arts world outside of China sees him as an MMA innovator.
