Wing Chun Master Makes Excuses For Losing To One-Armed Boxer - Yu Changhua Interview

Спорт

I had some time to translate part of the interview with Wing Chun Master Yu Changhua 余昌华 after his loss to one-armed boxer Xiong Cheng Cheng 熊呈呈 after the Xu Xiaodong vs Ding Hao MMA vs Wing Chun fight. Yu Changhua is the Wing Chun teacher of Ding Hao, and he traces his lineage directly back to Ip Man (at least that's the claim). If anything, Yu should have done better than his student (who lost badly to Xu Xiaodong). So in this in-depth analysis, I translate and analyze part of the interview that Yu Changhua gave to the press. The interview has since been taken down by on Chinese social media. No one knows why. I could investigate, but it'll probably lead to nothing. For those of you watching, leave your comments below and keep sending me awesome clips!

I wonder if these idiots know that was a good thing they didn’t eat a full meal. Reason: 1. Being full, compare to having a snack before sparring/fighting or and physical exercise will maximize performance because your body won’t focus on digestion. Hence helping you focus more 2. You won’t cramp.

“I had an injury and was hungry...” “The boxer only had ONE arm!” I almost feel sorry this guy: It’s hard to accept the truth when you’ve devoted so much time into something that doesn’t work. His argument of running away is reflective of his inability to accept reality. By avoiding the truth, he’s only stagnating his own growth. Life doesn’t always give us the opportunity to run, so if a martial art can’t win battles then it’s not fulfilling its purpose as a martial art. If you want to perfect the art of running away from fights, then become a sprinter or parkour master. Those are more effective than Wing Chun. PS: Great vid as always, man! Thanks for translating!

毛利沢东 Exactly, he poured so much of himself into the art that he’s trapped by denial and financial need. Something similar happened to a guy named Rokas, an Aikido master/teacher who pitted his skills against an MMA fighter and was thoroughly defeated after repeated attempts. However, in his case he chose to learn from the experience and retrain himself. He’s been expanding his knowledge and attempting to integrate what he can of Aikido into MMA. It takes a lot more courage and sacrifice to do that than the excuse making this guy is doing.

@@justinwallace269 China is a country with zero welfare, and all those so called welfare policies were made to collect more money but won't make people consider as tax. Chinese are also very unforgiving to each other, and failing their expectation once means death to cerleberties. The only thing protects local traditional martial art is nationalism, because Chinese simply need to believe something they have is truely the best in the world.

  • @justinwallace269

毛利沢东 The greatest thing I’ve observed about China is its resolve and hard work ethic, so if these traditional masters truly want to respect their country then I feel they should be willing to accept the hard reality they’ve been dealt recently by guys like Xu Xiaodong and seek to bring about change. People in China won’t be fooled by these excuses for long, if at all, so these traditional masters would be wise to acknowledge truth and devote themselves to evolving their art to create something better than the current mma. There will be far less forgiveness for these childish denials when people realize they’ve been lied to. These men should start by actually sparring and competing. It’s no wonder they’ve lose their edge, they don’t actually work on their system anymore. They need to fight MMA practitioners more often, even if they lose, and really think about why. If they showed courage instead of this nonsense, people would respect them far more.

It's fun to make of this horrifically flimsy excuse, but take a moment to consider that tens of thousands of kung fu fans are probably going to take this seriously and use it as a reason to disqualify one of the most embarrassing fights in kung fu history. The unmitigated gall to claim the fight was fixed because you didn't get extra rice before your fight with a boxer that had to literally fight with one hand tied behind his back... I wonder what the standard is. Does have to have two full meals before fighting a boxer that can't use either arm? Can the boxer still stand, or does that use his legs too much? Can the boxer eat the day before? The week before? Where do we find fairness in this guy's mind. At what point do we find ourselves in a "fair" fight.

This is almost painful to watch. When Miyamoto Musashi had his final duel against Sasaki Kojiro on Ganryu island, he got up in the morning and just drank the water they brought him to wash with, and skipped breakfast. You have to ask yourself, why did he do this? Then as he was being rowed across to the island, he cut down the spare oar and decided to use that instead of his katana, against another katana, in the hands of one of Japan’s finest swordsmen. Yet he still killed Kojiro-san. I’ve never competed, but if I did, I’m going to be spending a lot of time figuring out just when I should have my last meal, and what I should eat, so that I’m neither too full nor too energy deficient. Honestly speaking, his explanation just makes things worse. And in any case, if he believes these things to be true, why not just arrange a re-match (and bring a packed lunch, LOL).

In my utmost humble opinion. “ It is the practitioner that defines the art” “ It is ones opponent within context that dictates tactics” “ Understand and thus comprehend, what is, and what is not” No matter the art, if you do not apply the basic parameters of: Timing, Energy, motion within aliveness( Matt Thornton SBG ) ie CORRECT TRAINING METHOD. then you’ll never be able to apply and utilize the tools efficiently, nor correctly. “ Never fool oneself” The problem with the “ Face” culture, in concordance with foolish pride, is that it’s used predominantly within an secluded environment, and thus becomes the scapegoat for enabling the inability to properly perform/ apply. Such “ TMA masters” do this by following metaphor: This is my mountain 🏔, and he situates himself on the top. The student comes and look up, all the way to the peak, the” master” stands on the mountaintop, screaming directions as to where to go, as he won’t “ degrade” himself by walking down the mountain and leading nor guiding the student appropriately. No, he sits on his noodle throne, pretending to be king, and depending, if he likes the student personally or not( or if he is a sociopath, many instructors/ leaders are) he will guide you wrongfully up the mountain, perhaps even tell you of shortcuts which in terms might be a longer, more rugged path, or worst case a dead end, which in case means that you have to take a u-turn and start over. This ” master” on the top of the mountain, will never admit this( especially if he is a sociopath/ psychopath) as it’s everyone else’s fault and not his. The detriment of this, is that in worst case scenarios, it can hinder your growth and progression as a student and human being, or it can cost you your life ie get you killed. But a true master, will admit that he is only a student, that there is always a higher mountain, that there will always be more to learn, and he will stand on the bottom of the mountain where he resides, and he will lead you( as a student) with a humble, caring heart, assisting you on which path to take next. Telling you that: “ there are no guarantees, only opportunities” “ There is no secret ingredient” “ Fighting is relativity in motion, never expect only respond” “ There is ALWAYS a higher mountain” “ Know from whence you draw your water” - Ip Man Many people sell water, and it can be of inferior quality, and some, can be downright deadly.. Time is what your life consist of, it is precious, and as time is life, you actually have none to waste. It is a true shame that individuals such as this, is on the forefront and in turn becomes the head representatives of an art that is actually based upon sound efficient theoretical strategies and foundational concepts that should enable and make one capable, not hinder or restrict one’s ability to apply nor do. It is a shame. They are standing on the shoulders of their ancestors who died to refine the system into what it has sadly been reduced to in our day, this is the case with any misunderstood TMA/ MA system for that matter. And instead of admitting to his own faults and lack of understanding, he rather play the blame game, and make a complete mockery of himself and the art he represents. Would highly recommend looking into Sifu mark Philips from the Fight Science channel, as well as Sifu Alan Orr if one is interested to see a good representation of what ones wing Chun training/ or any art for that matter should consist of. Sincere regards. Fellow martial brother. Tom Framnes. Norway.

Poor excuse. The Wing Chun guy was simply very ordinary on the fighting stage. He didn't have the moves and agility expected of a kung fu master, and most importantly, he didn't have the physical conditioning that all professional boxers have from hard training (like western/kick boxing, MMA, Muay Thai). The many punches that the Wing Chun guy threw hardly fazed the boxer, but the boxer's punches shook up the Wing Chun guy very much.
