Why The UFC Doesn't Have A Definite GOAT

Although there may be multiple names that come in your head when you think of a GOAT, there isn't one that everyone agrees on. Please let me know who you think the greatest of all time is

GSP is the GOAT in my opinion. Losses do not matter because he made up every single loss with a victory. To me, greatness isn't perfection. It is the ability to overcome trials and tribulations. He learned from his mistakes and became better because of them.

I don't hold GSP's losses against him too much. The fact he came back and not just won a decision or beat Serra and Hughes, he destroyed them and beat them both the way they beat him. He armbared Hughes and essentially made Serra quit from strikes. Plus GSP's list of wins literally could not be better. He beat every single great WW from 3 era's. He beat 4 Hall of Famers, the UFC LW champion, the UFC WW champion, the UFC MW champion, the Strikeforce MW champion, the Strikeforce WW champion and the WEC WW champion. Recentcy bias is the only thing that hurts GSP. Most fans today were not watching the UFC back when Hughes, Trigg, Sherk and Fitch were monsters at WW and have no way of appreciating the level of competition he's been facing since he was 6-0. GSP is MMA's definitive GOAT.

Kinda got a great point but kind of waffle tbh. What you was kind of saying is DJ has done a lot outside of the UFC that isn't taken into account but the rodtang (sanchai is the muay Thai goat not rodtang) fight shouldn't be a serious factory . Firstly it was an expedition. Secondly rodtang was at the disadvantage as it's easier to enhance some skills you already knew and just not use 1 tool than to completely learn a new tool (DJ was also already a better striker than grappler who did use knees and elbows) so I'd say rodtang was at a disadvantage.

Another reason why I think Jon Jones would not be considered the goat would be that he only has a single fight in HW and that was against an incomplete fighter Ciryl Gane. Despite his dominant performance it's not enough to call him HW goat, if he has a few more big fights in HW it would solidify his legacy. Even his fight with Stipe Miocic if he wins won't make him the goat because Stipe is old and hasn't fought in forever.

Most of the critiques about him are from things that happened when he was already old. Even the loss to Weidman happened when he wasn't in his prime... In reality, there is no GOAT because fighters keep improving, keep getting stronger, and diminish in skill over time. To me, Jon hasn't completely proven himself. He fought the best in his division, but most were out of their prime or he waited until they were, like he did with Lyoto Machida. The rest of his opponents got destroyed and Jon was clearly toying with them. He beat multiple big names. DJ is a 2 division champ however you look at it. One fc flyweight is 135lbs and he won, lost, regained the title way past his prime. I don't understand dummies crying about the competition he faced! Like when ronda was around the levels were much lower comapred to now at BW. But She's credited as pioneering Womens MMA. When it comes to DJ, why not keep the same energy for him? When he was around he defeated the highest level of flyweight guys that was available at the time. The ceiling was much lower than the other divisions, which still remains to this day as heavyweight and lightweight don't have the same skill ceiling. But that doesn’t mean that HW fighters have it easy. It's a shame.

I've said it before, and I'll say it again. Demetrious Johnson. One of the longest tenured champs in UFC history, moved to an overseas league with old school pride rules and adjusted to those to defeat some of the filthiest fighters alive on the opposite side of the world, and he's an extremely good ambassador for the sport. DJ requires more credit. He is the GOAT. If his resume isn't enough, he passes the eye test with flying colors. Dude is literally the perfect MMA fighter. Also, the argument that "you must be undefeated to be the goat" is rubbish for several reasons, chief among them is that fighters have different periods of their career, and some go from strength to strength, being so much better than their nearly unrecognizable former self. GOAT should definitely be about the peak of one's career, because 99.99999999% of fighters are going to have at least a loss or two in their career. Jones lost 2 fights at the end of his LHW tenure, but the judges said he won, otherwise he would be out of contention according to casual fans. He's the paper GOAT at best. For sure top 5, but he's the paper GOAT. Stepping up a division to fight the worst possible opponent to beef up your legacy is not impressive, every single fighter he faced at LHW was more skilled than Cyril Gane, and time is going to age this statement like a fine wine, Gane is not a good mixed martial artist. Dude played FIFA instead of training for God's sake. Khabib could've had it, but he left too many what-ifs, and he won't even call himself the GOAT, he's humble. He doesn't care if he's the GOAT or not, nor whether people recognize him as that or not. As far as primes go, GSP and Silva were unbelievable talents who most likely will never be matched in terms of their greatness again. Kamaru, you could argue, was like 75-80% of a GSP and Adesanya was 60-70% of an Anderson Silva, but they left their primes and definitely did not trail off the peak of their careers with any real promise of a return to former glory. Both are likely done as top tier, championship-grade fighters. One Honorable Mention I think has to be Volkanovski, and I think once he beats Topuria, people will be high off of him again. Everyone thinks he's "done" because he lost off the couch to a champion a division above his own, but he'll put that to bed soon.

1:53 So have numerous other top ranking heavyweight UFC fighters like Francis Nganou, Brock Lesner, Alister Oveream, even elite fighters in lower weight classes…. They simply haven’t been tested for them nothing more. Just because a fighter isn’t huge doesn’t mean they aren’t leveraging some form of performance enhancing wherever possible; this argument is completely moot.

Crazy how Bones would be the undisputed GOAT if he had never been popped for PEDs… but then again, maybe he would have lost a few fights due to not being on them… who knows

That fight with Dominick Reyes was an absolute robbery. He was handily beaten for three round straight, which by all definitions was a win. And we'll likely never know the extent of PED usage by Jon Jones, but there's so many fucking stories about it, and there's such a relentless, never-ending amount of stories of him either being involved with PEDs to an extent, or just being a truly awful person outside of the ring. It's not like Khabib hasn't had a certain amount of steroid allegations. I would weigh GSP or Johnson as the GOAT really. Both decent people with humble personalities and a competive etiquette. Both were highly capable and charted careers. GSP's definitely got a few sus moments here or there, and I'm not on about the nipple tweaking as much as I am fights like the Johnny Hendricks one. By contrast, DJ lost his last fight in the UFC by a controversial decision, which Cejudo debatably didn't even win. But again losses aren't everything, there's plenty of context to them. GSP's losses to Hughes and Serra were avenged **dominantly**. DJ's losses prior to his title run such as against Cruz are symptomatic of being in a weight class too large for him. I mean Aderson Silva's losses prior to own run are far less 'damaging' to his GOAT potential as much as the fall ones are. Jon Jones? Definitely not a GOAT, awful person IRL and confirmed cheating athlete without much doubt, clearly had USADA benefits to an extent. Also blatantly cheated in the ring with eyepokes and arguably illegal knee strikes. He flat out lost to Dominick Reyes, so his record if you counted the DQ as a win would probably just be the same with a +1 win and still 1 loss. Arguably if he had been penalised for his other cheating behaviours then he might even have more NCs/DQs. Greatest does not mean best. Ali is considered the GOAT of Boxing, whereas Lennox Lewis is arguably the Best Boxer to have ever boxed. There's more to it than just record, especially when that record is tainted. Khabib Nurmagomedov? Crushed quite a lot of cans in his career, had a fairly uncompetitive rise given the people he was dealt to fight. Retired quite early, let's be honest. You can make the argument he retired when he should have, but he didn't remain around to fight into his twilight like other people on this list. Anderson Silva? Confirmed Drug cheat, just because he fought other drug cheats shouldn't vindicate that. He was handily defeated by Left-Hook Larry Bisping, a clean athlete at his own game. The subsequent losing skid, and the fact he nearly lost to Sonnen, and later to Weidman fully, was over his arrogant persona in the ring. Pride ultimately struck down Silva quite handily, and in the end his loss streak did a huge disservice to his legacy. Demetrius Johnson? Ruled over Flyweight quite heavily, but only Flyweight. Lost pretty one sidedly to Dominick Cruz, those suplexes yikes. But he was a clean athlete, conducted himself well and was unfairly targeted by the UFC. His final fight in the promotion was arguably either a win, a draw, or a very very close loss. GOAT of Flyweight undoubtably, but just not likely the GOAT of MMA. Had he beaten Cruz and been successful like Cejudo was at Bantamweight, he may have had a very close chance of being the Greatest. GSP for me is the GOAT. Whilst he arguably is up to 3 losses, he avenged two of those dominantly. He defeated Bisping at his prime in a pretty decent showing at Middleweight. He ruled over Welterweight and defeated both Penn and Hughes, who without him likely would've competed for GOAT status themselves. Clean athlete like Johnson, very strong record of fighting and for sure, a well rounded and decent guy. Yeah he's made mistakes here and there, but otherwise I can't fault GSP for the spot. Impressive stats, brilliant performances and excellent legacy. Clean, no personal bullshit involving abusing his wife or doing roids, or drugs, or being alleged with either.

Losses shouldn't matter when discussing GOATS. look at other sports and look at who's the GOAT in each sport Soccer: Messi, Ronaldo, whoever Basketball: MJ, whoever baseball: whoever it is. have all of them won every single game they were in: ABSOLUTELY NOT, and they're still praised for the best to do it. if losses don't count in other sports, why should it here? it should be about skill, technique, title defenses, ETC.

you will never get someone 100% so you have to compromise and build a criteria my criteria 1- clean Athletes 2- few loses 3- wins with domination 4- good example for the sport so kids can look up to 5- retired as a winner his last fight must be a win by this I got two now and I'm OK with anyone of them being NO1, also Volk he still undefeated the a Featherweight champion if he win his next fight and retired he is up their 1-Khabib 2-GSP I would put DJ with them but he is not retired yet so i don't know if he will win his last fight or not
