what i admire about Russell is that he IS truly funny, and yet there is an underlying intelligence to his humour. with his humorous analysis of the important issues of the day, more often than not, he gets his intended message across, proving his point that humour can be intelligent, and thus a tool for change where change definitely is needed. Demonstrations, while they can be annoying, offer the ordinary citizens a venue for expressing their opinions. It is one of the very few ways in which they are able to be direct participants in asserting their democratic rights! At times annoying, yes! But necessary, YES, YES, YES!

Just to back up Friedr, XR always plans routes for emergency vehicles to get through their action and I'm not clear that the quote from the Birmingham leader would have been true. XR and others are well aware that the slightest suggestion (and a lot of made up ones) that they causing harm (not inconvenience, but /harm/) works against them, though I'm not clear that someone who supports environmental issues would suddenly stop just because they were late for the start of a movie.

Not going to lie, as someone who works in the NHS, the only thing that pisses me off about extinction rebellion is when they block ambulances and don't even have the decency to move. We also are people frustrated about global warming, but blocking an ambulance is not a solution.

The life of someone who is having a fucking heart attack is more important to me than some prick who lacks the common sense to NOT SIT IN THE MIDDLE OF THE ROAD! And I'd justify it by saying they were blocking an emergency vehicle and the patient was going to die because of them, and I had no time to divert and I gave them warnings with the sirens and horns One day they're gonna pick the wrong fight and they'll get turned into paste on the road. And no one will mourn them because they were fucking imbeciles

This was a great segment (as always). It was pretty damn good too. It was written by a man who was, coincidentally, a government scientist. Not surprisingly, the government put him "on leave" and under investigation after the song came out. Maybe somebody could rewrite this for Liz Truss ... ? kzread.info/dash/bejne/d51pks6GZsTIYcY.html

02:48 precisely. Ironically the protestors don’t seem to get that by protesting in this manner they are doing the system’s work by reinforcing the idea that the protesters are the exception. The system will change, it’s inevitable but it does so on its own terms. Just look at how the system changed when it came to women’s rights to work. It was beneficial then for the system to change because it meant it could almost double its workforce. How many typical households these days have only one out of a couple working, man or woman? Surely if you double the workforce it doesn’t take 2 incomes to maintain the status of one household? But thanks to rampant wage stagnation even having 2 people in a household working is not enough anymore.

During our unnecessary and harmful C*v*d lock downs we had Jimmy Rees here. Quite a lot of people just waited for his sarcastic presentation of "meanwhile in Australia" to learn what was going on. It's a sad comment that comedians give us more genuine info than official news sites...or the government. England, fight this with all your might. Fifty years ago, when people protested our involvement in the Vietnam debacle, we had draconian laws passed that are still in effect and limited our ability to peaceably protest restrictions during the plague. Don't give them a single little concession, fight with all your might to be able to protest about any damn thing you want to!! Thanks Russell for both the humour and the info. This makes me think of how large parts of the trans community fight each other instead of fighting for rights. I have litterally been told by other trans people to basically give up, to not cause a disturbance, its sad to see and when I pointed out that people like them are slowing our rights progressing they started harrassing me. I just want to be treated like a human being.

I've seen a few protest, some I support some I don't, but the worst was one in london a few years ago the noise was unbelievable, well over 130 decibels due to the horns and other instruments, I couldn't leave as I had a job to do in the building next to the protest, luckily it was done within two hours and I left the area, I'm sure many ear drums took damage that day

Constructive protest is the best. Shame our government by taking positive measures that help people as well as pointing out government shortcomings. They take taxes off of us, we should be the ones dictating where OUR money is spent. OUR money, not theirs.

See that was the whole goal of "big society". The Tories stop funding social schemes so the public will do it themselves. Because the best way to get people to work together is to defund any useful projects. You helped at a food bank in protest, the Tories think that's their policy working as intended. "See, the peasants don't need the money.". Now go and blockade corporate HQs, the houses of parliament, form mobs that make the overpaid scumbags lives more difficult. Now they care. Now the media pay attention. Constructive protests make a paragraph on page 10, destructive protests make the front page.

Canadian here. Protestors in Ottawa were walking into apartment buildings and pissing in the lobbies, blowing truck horns outside private residential buildings all hours of the day and night. Ambulances couldn’t get to emergency calls. Yes protests need to be allowed. Private citizens who happen to live nearby shouldn’t suffer the brunt of it.

It makes me laugh how many people I know have agreed with this bill because "protests are annoying"... guess what, THEY'RE SUPPOSED TO BE! The whole point of a protest is to draw attention to an issue and express the fact you're unhappy about it, that doesn't work if they're tucked away in a corner so they don't get in anyones way. I wonder how many of the people saying this realise just what protests have done for them and what rights we wouldn't have if not for protests

@@ajc1482 it's rather sad in many ways. But the thing no one seems to be talking about is how a just stop oil spokesman said it was organised and they thought through all the risks before doing it. I bet the leaders of the group never told the young people that did the stunt that it could result in a prison sentence of upto 10 years in prison. The leaders of these groups are awful human being who don't care how many peoe get hurt as long as theor message is heard as we seen with the painting stunt they are even fine with throwing their own members under the bus to get their message across...
