The worst thing is that people will buy the tickets, watch the games even though they know exactly what's going on in Quatar. I fear deep down they care more about their own interests than doing the right thing.

As resident in this beautiful land welcoming country, it’s the best place to host the World Cup, it should have been sooner. Everywhere it’s been held, except in the Middle East. Football is so extremely populair in the Middle East, and now for the first time it’s never been closer. I’m proud it’s in Qatar, and if it took money to get it done, so be it…. Yep. We have a friend that went to work in Qatar for some place.. The guy set up an RDA (riding for disabled) because there was nowhere for his disabled son to ride a horse, so he imported some from the UK.. They clearly have money since the barns are all marble flooring, the horses have air cons and imported hay. They do live well but our friend said when it drops to 17C temp for "winter" they're all getting their thermals on. 🤣 The country is very rich, though like everywhere else, its the people that ruin it. I understand being religious, but religion is meant to be personal, you can't inflict on peoples human rights because your religion doesn't agree with certain things. Whether it be abortion, homosexuality or eating pigs. Humans do have the right to live as they are. 🤷‍♀️ unfortunately some countries, particularly those in the middle East, do not agree with these things.

Their laws are pretty much made around the religion The likes of France the bans are due to fear because of extrememists from these religions. Guaranteed if middle Eastern terrorists didn't use Islam as an excuse, France wouldn't ban burkas and what not.

France want “integration” but these women (many of whom are in controlling marriages) won’t be able to integrate because their husbands won’t allow them to leave the house if they look like a “slut”. Also the Middle East, while maybe not now has not always been so restrictive on other religions. My mom grew up in 90s Iraq with her best friend being a Christian Armenian and having a large Christmas tree at school and in their neighbourhood.

I never said there were lies, however it is crammed full of half-truths. Twisted and ill-informed half-truths. Tons and tons and tons. In fact the entire sketch is largely based on twisted half-truth. From the simply wrong - such as the "fact" that Qatar is air conditioning the country and the stadiums. WRONG!! That was indeed the initial proposal 12 years ago, but that got shelved when the world cup was switched to winter, for precisely THAT reason. To half-truths like you can't drink alcohol inside the stadiums. YOU CAN'T DO THAT IN THE UK EITHER!! You can't roll around in public drunk, well - YOU CAN'T DO THAT IN THE UK EITHER!! In the UK you have seriously impeded rights about what you can and can't do i public too, so its an equal playing field. Now..... How many employees have died in direct connection with the world cup? Well, in fact that would be 15, 3 of whom were not in good health to start with. As to how many workers have died in Qatar as a whole since the WC was awarded, then he's close to the truth, but equally in the 12 years since they won the right to host the WC, over 1000 workers have died in the UK during the same period on building sites. I don't see THAT being linked to the WC. Sadly, construction is dangerous the world over, although it is true that using 'cheap' labour increases the likelihood. I could go on and on (I am known for that) but will end on the whole slave labour story. I am guessing that you have never actually spoken to any of these workers in your life, whereas I HAVE! And on numerous occasions. So when you are faced with a tired and admittedly over-used worker who claims that he is happy that he is - at last - able to feed his family back home where there is no work there, what do you say to them? All - and I mean ALL - workers connected with the WC are protected by a "Workers' Rights" regime that many European countries would do well to follow. It is strict, unremitting, and VERY closely monitored by the WC committee, who have a large department exclusively devoted to maintaining standards. Next - is FIFA rotten? Yes indeed it is. But the UK played by the VERY same rules during the hosting competition that Qatar did - although they only got 2 pathetic votes (and you can see where the resentment and puritanism of UK PLC HAS COME FROM). Read into THAT what you will, but I know that there have been over 10 international investigations whIch have all unanimously agreed that Qatar's bidding committee did nothing wrong in their competition. Bin Hamam was found to have bribed.True, but it is equally true that not only was Bin Hamam NOT a member of Qatar's official bidding competition, but the competing delegates from Qatar's organising committee were obsessive about distancing themselves from him from the very outset of the competition, as they knew he was bent. Do they deserve to be tarnished by the same brush as him, just because they were Qatari too? So my farewell comment is this... I am sick and fucking tired of Brits being holier-than-thou at precisely the time when they are holier than absolutely nobody in the entire universe. Qatar has come a L O N G way to addressing the issues they need to address in the 12 years since they won the hosting rights. Where the fuck has UK plc gone in the last 12 years????? (or even the last 12 days, bismillah)

Not to mention the horrendous amount of construction worker deaths whilst these stadiums were being built. Complete disregard for health and safety and extreme violation of human rights. Qatar has an extremely small population so relies on migrant workers, who then get stranded in the country due to debt. It’s so horrific and a lot of these workers end up with serious health problems as a result of over-crowded accommodation (which is filthy), not enough money to buy nutritionally sufficient food and exposure to dangerous equipment. I’ve been following the development very closely these past few years (related college assignment) and words can’t even begin to explain how angry and disappointed I am that little to no effort has been made to improve conditions for these people. Just goes to show how deeply corruption runs, and how willing others are to ignore it so long as their pockets remain full. I really hoped that some intervention or at least condemnation would be made by other countries but here we are. Fucking pricks.

Pretty funny but joking aside. Let’s break down the criticism that Qatar is receiving and expose the hypocrisy in each one:- 1) Thousands of worker died building the stadiums. The Guardian who was first to publish that number said it’s for everyone who died in Qatar from 2010 to 2021 and can’t say for sure if that was due to the world cup but because big stadiums were being built it’s safe to assume they died while building them. Qatar official number on the other hand is just 3. So what is the truth? Apparently the guardian forgot something called Covid 19, forgot that people die from all kind of reasons car accidents, heart attacks, get electrocuted, drown, cancer, drugs, alcohol. etc. To make that jump and assume everyone who died died because they were working on the stadiums is bigoted conclusion that has ill intended agenda behind it. 2) Qatar doesn’t welcome the LBGTQ+ community. While Qatar has strict laws about public behavior they are in no shape or form against gays per se, if a hetro couple indulge intimately in public they may get in trouble equally. However in the privacy of their hotels no one cares or is going to care. In fact men in the middle east can hold hands in public and they won’t be judged like here in the US. Kisses on the cheeks are also common within the same gender. People are friendlier and less judgmental. And FYI 7 previous hosts of world cup had laws against homosexuality, where was the outcry then? 3) No alcohol. CNN ran a report recently saying alcohol kills one in five in the US for all those who are under 49. Pretty shocking! Isn’t it? I personally would rather no alcohol period, we can enjoy a soccer game without poison, but as I understood the Fifa announcement Qatar allowed alcohol in the stadiums and in the hotels and some other avenues, but did’t allow it in the perimeters of the stadiums, to comply with their conservative Islamic view and to reduce chances of riots by drunk fans. Are you so distressed by not able to drink from the moment you leave the stadium to the moment you get to your hotel? Seriously. 4)Human rights in Qatar and lack of democracy . People who talk about this need to be honest with themselves. Have they felt the same during the winter Olympics in China while the Uyghurs Genocide is under way and till this day? Have they called to boycott the Israeli soccer team after 74 years of occupation and Apartheid against the Palestinians? Last week Israeli media confirmed tgat Israel used biological warfare against the Palestinians, but all western media liberal and conservative ignored the story, Etc. So why the double standard? 5) Qatar spent 200 billions to host the world cup which will go to waste afterwords. Not sure where that number came from but who cares, if they are rich and can afford to make this event successful unique and memorable why is that a bad thing? Especially to us who are not paying for it. Instead I would say Thanks for your generosity. 6) Qatar is not environment friendly and its economy is based on fossil fuel. Please put your money where your mouth at and don’t fill your car with gas. Because that gas comes from these places. Also protest having 100 cereal brands in your local grocery store. And while at it don’t ever fly to anywhere in the world, but we know you won’t do any of that. 7) Qatar is tiny. Good you can watch two games in the same day. Finally since when people around the world have to be cut and paste of each other. We need to tolerate some differences once and a while. This world cup will be great in spite of the haters, I am sure of it. It’s all about soccer at the end of the day.

it’s an absolute lie which has been regurgitated by social media and silly news articles. The number is at minimum 3, and at most 35 dead from BUILDING stadiums. It came from a bullshit Guardian article in which the headline stated that 6500 dead in Qatar since World Cup awarded. It was misinterpreted and twisted by everyone as 6500 died building stadiums. It’s untrue. It’s 6500 total deaths of south East Asians from all causes, including non work related deaths since Qatar were awarded the World Cup. That includes everything from car accidents to natural death from old age. The “6500” number is just bullshit propaganda. People can hate Qatar. I don’t care. But do it for a better reason instead of some some shitty made up lie.

The 2010 World Cup in South Africa left Cape Town with a large white elephant stadium that dominates the skyline and is not used often since the local sport clubs have their own stadiums. The city originally argued for the refurbishment of the local soccer club's stadium but FIFA wanted a new stadium with Table Mountain as a backdrop and got it.

I'm genuinely curious now how Qatar is going to handle a ton of westerners coming in for a major event?? They have laws where unmarried men and women can't touch, and can't stay in a hotel room together. No, it is not "world news". It is in the right place here, reaching out to a small handful of brainwashed fools. A question these commenters never ask, is if conditions are so bad in Qatar, why do so many millions of workers go there? It's because the low levels of income in their home countries make Qatar wages attractive to these workers. Wages are low in Qatar by western standards, but they are still much higher than in the home countries of these workers - otherwise they wouldn't bother going. Why doesn't even one of these celebrity band-wagon types do an honest comparison with what they were getting BEFORE they went to Qatar? But no, you'll never see that, because that doesn't fit the woke agenda. People like Russell Howard live in the West and enjoy a fabulous lifestyle, and these videos aren't honest, they are just cheap virtue signaling designed to make them popular in the eyes of the woke industry.

It's normal though for megastructures to have fatal accidents. But those countries didn't complained nor the family members of the deceased. It's only logic that they have been well compensated like most other fatal work place accidents in building megastructures all over the world. Only idiots that believe this Caucasian biase report. My dad actually worked out there for a bit of labor a few years ago they literally built a city for the world cup and it is expensive as hell out there. It's built to be a fancy show-off city.

Just shows how unwilling people are to accept any amount of self sacrifice to try and make the world a better place. Footballers, media, pundits etc happily hype up the importance of kneeling before games to support the fight against oppression, bigotry and suffering but the second an opportunity arrives to make a real stand against these things they shrink away from it. Sitting on the floor for 60 seconds before you're paid 100 grand to kick a ball around means nothing if you refuse to boycott a world cup that has taken the lives of thousands of enslaved workers building the stadiums these players will be playing in. Chilling in the sky sports executive box talking about how we need to do better as a society whilst being cut a nice fat paycheck for flying to Qatar to promote air conditioned stadiums and gloss over the unimaginable suffering required to build them is disgusting

Just me or does any else feel like whomever wins this worldcup wont really come out as winners or be remembered as a true world cup victory. Might aswell play barefeet on an unmarked beach anywhere else in the world than this

i've never been interested in football, just never been able to get into it. even after 5 years working at a pub, it doesn't interest me. but i love how it brings people together. i watched the euros final at work and it held my atttention, because i was invested in people's happiness. i wanted england to win to hear the cheers and singing. football can bring out the best in people, and i don't have to care about the game to care about that. as a working class lesbian, i feel for all the football fans who can't go to see the world cup due to prices or worries for their safety. this corporate corruption is just awful.

No alcohol allowed. Here is the World Cup being hosted by a country with lots of intolerance for the very cultural things that permissive societies take for granted. It is going to be interesting to see how well visitors from different cultures can quickly adjust and adapt to the environment they will be finding themselves in Qatar. Like their intolerance is hard for us to understand it is just as important to know they are as equally shocked to see the way we live. So, perhaps the important thing here is to strike a balance between the two extremes of intolerance and permissiveness. Like the saying goes, when in Rome...

It's under the Kafala (Arabic for Sponsorship) system used by the Gulf states. The way it works is all migrant workers have to be sponsored, usually by their employer, and that sponsor is responsible for their visa and legal status. Sounds good on paper, and not unlike some of our own immigration laws, but what ends up happening is the workers pay for their own travel, and once they arrive, their employer (slaver) steals their passports so they can never leave. They are then forced into labour camps and work 12 hour shifts 7 days a week

It's a case of would you rather sit in a scrap metal shack in the middle of a slum for the rest of your days or go work in a country that has promised you a decent wage and decent hours for just a chance at providing for your family. We have Americanized football. No more is the game about passion and a local identity. It's all about money. Every North American sport is like this. The cheapest tickets for many tickets at most top tier sporting venues will cost you anywhere from $100 to $250, Maddison Square Garden being at the top end of that list. Unfortunately, when you price the tickets so only the richest people can attend, you loose any sort of atmosphere and any sense of a common shared identity amongst supporters. I have been to NHL games in Canada that are atmosphereless. The organizers have to tell the people to cheer or even get them loud. It eventually seems to be forced fun. You are never going to get people singing "throw the dildo on the pitch" in North America. Although, the Hamilton Tiger Cat supporters of the CFL would maybe have something similar. This is what happens when you remove the working man from sport stadiums, they become boring places with little or no atmosphere.

Okay not advocating Qatar, but did anyone check on those migrant workers and how they were living back in their own countries? These workers work for $1-2 a day in India / Pakistan, working without safety gear or even shoes, in the same heat they experience in the Middle East. These migrants then come to countries like Qatar, UAE, Saudi, etc to make 10x more, so their families can stay comfortable back home. If any issue is to be raised, first you can just get into the root cause of this problem. All big western giant companies should revisit the problem when they outsource their dirty work to Asia and Africa.

The only thing I agree with is how it was wrong of Qatar to buy the world cup, everything else is just BS. Qatar is a monarch country that's ruled by a king. They have their own rules and regulations. For people who haven't even been to Qatar, much less citizens don't get to decide whether they should ban LGBT rights or not. It's true Qatar is not the country you wanna go to if you want that freedom offered in democratic western countries. But that doesn't mean you get to choose how things are in another country. There are rarely any Qatari citizens who are unsatisfied with Qatar's laws. They provide free health care, a plot of land, education a well paying job and even more for their own citizens. They have their life easy. Plus LGBT bans are not gonna affect them much because it's a Muslim country and in islam it's not allowed to be homosexual. Not to mention banning LGBT has NOTHING to do with FIFA being corrupt. Different countries have different cultures. If you decide to live in one then respect it. And for the so called "modern day slavery" , NO one was forced to work in Qatar, they are migrants who came on their own will wanting to earn more cash. And yes as a construction worker your risk increases for casualties and most residents were un- aware of these numbers, I definitely agree for 10 years those are huge numbers. But Qatar is not the only country where people have died in the construction sites. Everyone coming to work in Qatar with a resident permit gets health care benefits that many countries won't even give their own citizens. Now as for the tickets being expensive, it's only expensive for outside Qatar ppl . The residents usually have it a lot cheaper (11 euros cheapest)and most of them even got it free. This is just hate towards Qatar for no reason.

@@williamiwrn9569 Beckham is the sort of rich person I loathe - already stinking rich (140 million a few years back) but still ready to stoop as low as needed because Qatar offered him 10 million to promote it. Doing something questionable for a tenner when you only have 140 quid to your name is understandable, but doing something for 10 million when you are already worth an eighth of a billion is just greed, pure and simple.

I'm not into football, but I never had a reason to deliberately turn away from it, until this.
