Why Monica Lewinsky is the new face of a major fashion brand

Activist Monica Lewinsky has joined the women's clothing brand Reformation as the face of its new campaign aimed at encouraging women to vote in the 2024 election. Washington Post Opinion Columnist Catherine Rampell joins CNN's Abby Phillip to discuss. #CNN #News

I believe Monica is a great representation for the brand Reformation. The brand uses sustainable practices and they are about giving something new life, Monica has had to reinvent herself many times which is better than quitting. I’m not sure how much it helps to get out the vote, but it won’t hurt.

Both hurt the people they loved. The President hurt the First Lady and their daughter, Chelsea. Monica hurt the person she loved the most, herself. I think Anita Hill would take offense to being compared to Monica Lewinsky. I too, believe Monica deserves to be happy but perhaps she needs to ask herself why her success needs to be tied to fame.

Catherine Rampell has completely missed the point here. Monica isn´t a celebrity asking people to vote! She is a public figure who only became one because she was shamed and ridiculed and treated like dirt by a highly misogynistic press and public and who was thrown to the wolves by the President, who should have known much better than to do what he did. If anything, she seems to be asking people to remember that they do have a stake in who gets elected and who leads their country and that that person should be held accountable for their actions!

I disagree with Catherine Rampell, the Washington Post columnist being interviewed here. On first glance, these ads look like they are just fashion ads of an attractive woman wearing smart workwear with the voting message as just an add on. Just saying, ´No she looks great, the clothes look great´and ignoring the real message coming through is an attempt to dismiss the true power of these images, but I don´t think that power can be denied. It´s something that starts working on you long after you´ve seen them. The fact that it is Monica who is wearing them and the way her message of confidence, resilience, and overcoming injustice, sexism, and shaming come across is very powerful and not something that just any fashion model or even that most celebrities could achieve and the political message, while not so in your face, is something that no one who sees these images, will not eventually start to think about long after they´ve seen the images and forgotten about the clothes and the brand. It´s Monica and that´s everything. There is no one who was around at the time of the scandal in the 90s that will not think back to what happened back then and how the whole thing unfolded and how she was treated and how much strength it would take to come back and face the world like this and remind them of what was done to her and how important it is to think carefully about who we vote for, who are leaders are, how women have and are being treated in comparison to men, and holding those in positions of authority accountable for their actions. It´s only recently that there has been quite a lot of talk about how misogynistic the 90s were. And they were. Monica is not a celebrity. She inadvertently became a very public figure and the subject of shaming and ridicule worldwide. Monica has shown herself to be extremely intelligent and very tough. She made some very bad choices when she was young, but was made to suffer disproportionately and for decades, and all while the President of the United States, a man elected to lead the nation, got away with behaving unprofessionally and unethically, and with throwing her under the bus! While the main aim of these ads is clearly to present her in a completely different light and do successfully show her as being the powerful woman she is, I think the ads will actually also make more young people, especially women, think about voting and also about sexism and power and about who we put into power and holding the people that we put into positions of power accountable for their actions.

Ever heard of "click baiting". Her name is known. When people read or hear her name - they "click" and want to read "the latest". What she promotes is secondary. Cigars would probably not be a good idea. Who wants to "light one" that is called "Bill's Special?

Wow! Monica, Im very happy for you...Im a Mexican living in Suisse for the last 14 yrs, but I followed your love affair with Vil Clinton through the TV...I even met Clinton in Mexico City at a especial lunch meeting, and I saw how his presence excited the ladies attending, young ones (25-35) and mature (40-70)....I wish you the best and I hope you find a good man to value your quality as a human being and as a woman fighter....abrazos Monica!!
