It's hard to fathom an actual civil war. I mean, the first one had an obvious cause and objective: states have the right to slavery (and national respect of their "property rights") or they don't. There are cultural and economic aspects, but states seceded so they could have that main thing. What does MAGA want? What does it gain? Evangelicals want a theocracy but they are a minority and almost half the people on "their side" don't want things run their way. Some want mass deportations, perhaps even of US citizens they don't like.. I just don't see that "one main thing" that they would be willing to give up the next season of Survivor and the next Super Bowl in order to go kill American men, women, and children. I get they are upset. Destroying your own economy and lives in order to.. what? Not disagreeing with you but I don't get it.

Meacham's take is refreshingly clear about how 1) you can be legitimately concerned about the main candidates to the point they need to earn your support and 2) voters must ground themselves in the reality of what this election means going forward. Candidates that want to fight for democracy (presumably Biden) vs candidates that treats people like dolls for a leader (presumably the other dude). Candidates that have both said and done controversial things and don't inspire excitement even if they helped do some things people liked. Many are unhappy about this, talk to a counselor or not (your right to do or not), you're not the only one that feels this way! Vote anyways! The alternative is sitting at home on Election Day to sulk like a child.

It makes my skin crawl, it makes my blood simmer (not boil), and I have to stop myself from puking every time that I hear somebody complain about Joe Biden's age, as if Donald Trump is a better alternative then electing an aging Joe Biden. For one thing, Trump is only four years younger than Biden. Also, Biden has a Vice President that is not a complete lunatic - Kamala Harris. I would rather have Kamala Harris as president than Donald Trump. I would rather choose myself as president, then Donald Trump. Donald Trump is a horrible choice for president, and I wish that were just my opinion. That is a worldwide consensus among leaders in Europe and across the Pacific, except for countries run by authoritarian dictators. If you can't see the difference between Joe Biden and Donald Trump, you have a privilege that many other people don't have. You are also a low information voter, so you need to become a high information voter - end very quickly - or listen to high information voters. I like my presidents without being defendants in criminal trials, not being convicted of fraud in their state of business, and not losing a civil trial where the defendant proved she was sexually assaulted and then slandered by the president. If you're too low information to know which one I'm talking about, that's Donald Trump. Vote Biden or vote stupid. Vote Biden or vote treason. Vote Biden or vote confederate. Vote Biden or vote authoritarian. Clear enough for you?

  • @c-gunz4482

You lost all credibility when you said Kamala Harris isn't a complete lunatic, have you never heard her speak and do the creepy laugh? She called Joe Biden a racist on the debate stage then decided to run with him after she got embarrassed during her own campaign. It's funny when you look at the actual data coming out of the polling stations and elsewhere, the Dems have the vote of privileged people and it's the average American who's now voting more in favor of conservative policies on all levels of government. Do you not think attacking your political opponent with the Department of Justice is an authoritarian act? Half the stuff you wrote is simply not supported by any facts or evidence.

Retired Air Force Colonel here. While stationed in Germany back in the 80’s, I couldn’t understand how these hard working civilians could fall under the spell of Hitler and Nazism. With Trump, I now understand. Hitler came to power using his “Brown Shirts”. This was a paramilitary organization outside of the German military and police (although many members of the military and police secretly joined at first.). They did Hitler’s dirty work. When the establishment reacted to the Brown Shirts outrageous activities, Hitler would deny any involvement. In this way, Hitler and his Nazi party eventually took over all aspects of the German Government. The parallels of how Hitler came to power and what Trump is doing with his Proud Boys and other supporters are overwhelming. For example, he doesn’t have to threaten the witness in his trials. All he has to do is berate them and his minions take over. The same was true concerning January 6th. They continued to riot until Trump tweeted out to stop (and he said he “Loved” them all) Responsible news organizations need to get the word out about Trumpism. History is a great teacher and the public needs to be better informed about the threat that established itself in the 1930’s and what is happening today.

Meacham really got it: Democracy's not just a form of government, it's a way of how we see and regard each other, in this case as equals in dignity and rights. That's what I've been saying less eloquently for years - tyranny starts in childhood when you regard someone distastefully different as a second class person at best and worthy of persecution at worst. If not defeated, that way of thinking segues into the older ages as bigotries and oppressions of all sorts - in no small part due to the culture allowing that kind of treatment toward the different and those unable to defend themselves.

Jon Meacham is a gifted orator and a remarkable person who never ceases to bring new ideas and knowledge about his country and its political past to viewers like us half-a-world away from you. Jon, am I right in saying this? Former President Donald John Trump is taking a page out of the LBJ playbook. In 1963 Bobby Baker and Billy Estes were about to sing like canaries if they got jail time unless Johnson could use the DOJ to give them their walking papers and have his criminal background disappear. Experts like Jon Meacham and others on the four corners of the globe all have their own version of the facts, but from what I have read and heard that is one major reason why JFK never made it to re-election. If you look for a motive; you often find the culprit. That said, former President Trump will be over his 91 legal bumps if he wins and he'll be able to use the DOJ---and you can bet that former AG Barr will write another 17-page letter propositioning for the coveted post in Trump's second Administration. I have no credentials like Jon when I say Trump is back on the stump and not running for President to make America Great again, he's running to make himself safe again.

I don't get it! Just curious. Again, he already said he voted for Presidents from both parties and is registered an Independent.
