Lewis Hamilton hasn’t been having a great season so far, struggling with a car that is really fighting him.
But every time they make a change to try and fix the issue, it seems to get worse. So what’s going on with that Mercedes? And why can’t Lewis seem to get the best out of it?
Let’s get nerdy on car dynamics.
Now, first of all. It’s the car. And second - George is having all of the same issues.
There are loads of headlines about this saying ‘Lewis doesn’t know how to drive bad cars’ or that he was ‘spoiled by perfect cars’.
And it's all a load of rubbish. So let me explain.
Mercedes have a few main issues (and we made a video about this) but it’s weight, drag and porpoising.
But the porpoising is the main one, and it's really hurting lap time. In Australia, the Mercs were nearly a second off the Red Bulls and the Ferraris.
And yes, they still got some good points - but if they want to be battling at the top - they have some big issues to solve.

This is a great reminder that F1 is an engineering championship BEFORE it's a racing one. To have any chance of anything you first need the car, it doesn't matter if it's the GOD of driving in a slower car, simply no chance of winning. It's different from other racing series where the cars are similar and "anything" can happen.

Sure it was. However, setting your car up better than your teammate is needed for consistent wins. Lewis did this by politically influencing Mercedes in not giving him a good teammate. He’d crash, ignore orders and blatantly tried blocking his teammates when they were far faster. Lewis is obviously good enough to drive the best car home so Mercedes never had a choice realistically. Bringing in two new drivers is not ideal. So Lewis could stay, Bottas joined as a filler and Lewis got to drive the best car home unrivalled. Not only because his car was best, Lewis created the perfect environment within Mercedes. Now George comes in and proves just a good as Lewis, if not better since he finds better setups quicker. Excuses will come rapidly. Lewis changed, safety cars, stomach hurting, racism, the list will be endless. Anything but admitting Rosberg was just as good as Lewis and random talents like George are as well.

@@Alumnikiid you mean the year where for the second time in a row he completely choked away his title chances on lap 1 and was in position to lose again but got saved by rain falling at the perfect time ? Hes a good driver sure. But one of the best, nah. The greatest has to win under pressure with all the odds against him. Hamilton has never won with the odds against him. In 2021 he was given the perfect chance to silence all his haters. That safety car was a blessing in disguise, if he had won simply by a contoversial track limits decision and just driving forward with the fastest car all race that 8th title would mean fuck all. He finally got the perfect chance to silence everyone who says its all luck and hes not the best driver just lucky to be in the best car. And he couldnt even last 4 turns. You think Senna or Schumacher or even Alonso or Vettel wouldnt have been able to defend for just one lap for the title even with bad tyres. I think they would. Hamilton was finally given the chance to prove he could win even with bad luck and a slower car. But he didnt.

You do known that Ocon hit Hamilton in the pits and due to that got stuck behind a drs train (which in Imola isn't something you can pass through) and Russel got lucky with the turn 1 incident due to being on the best side of the track and being able to smoothly pass those at the bad side of the track where Sainz Ricciardo Bottas collided and gave Russel a free path to go through and if Alpha Romeo didn't mess up Bottas his pit stop he would've passed Russel and if Leclerc didn't spin at the end Russel would've ended the race in 6th and Hamilton if would've been free of the DRS train he could've worked his way up from the 11th position he had. How on earth can you wreck the driving characteristics during winter season so incredibly well ???? Thats not possible....unless something happened MB doesnt want us to know. And my guess is that bc of whatever reason they are forced to make the same power as other cars were driving with for years. The MB car therefore has aerodynamics with too less power resulting in a combo that simply doesn't work good. MB will have to come up with a car design which fits the power the engine is making now.

The airflow / downforce / groundeffects combination, exerts more of less inside versus outside tension across the tyre building up during acceleration, like sucking. This deformation will cause the bouncing. So you want the tyre surfaces themselves as little as possible part of the air flow mechanics and dynamics exerted by all fins, vents and wings for a free motion. With the pre-2022 old car, the tyres were a forgiving factor, less in play, airflowwise. The sucking could be sufficiently absorbed. With the lower tyre cheek walls, this has dramatically shifted: one side of the tyre is forced to glue to the tarmac, the other part is sucked in other directions, causing the whobbling. Also acceleration impairs sucking effects / counter forces within any rotating system. Look at drag race cars, tyres kind of swelling, lifting the axis. The expansion in one direction pulls at the expansion in the other direction, creating an internal twitching, resulting in porpocing / bouncing. The more arch is connected, per unit of time, the bigger these counter force pressures, in a progressive magnifying amount. The combination of all these factors is, what is happening and may make and break car designs.

IMO its from the new aero...you go from a high speed/relatively straight line...to turning or angled windage....and its somewhat obvious across the range that this is the commonality/issue with the porposing You go from one coefficient in the high speed/straight zone....and windage is "effective" with the downforce/aero but as you turn/initiate or brake initiate and start to shift overall geometry...its an oscillation Of force on a constant basis each second/speed shift from break/initiation to mid corner/exit accel. Including angle/g and how these all affect downforce/directional force based on aero. I just hope the majority of drivers can stay safe and make it through this season so that they can get back to dialing this cars in from mercs team to others. Even when seasons are seemingly blown...they still have races/tracks to gain important data from.

One of the main reasons is that George never had the reliability and smooth ride of previous mercs for years. He would naturally be more comfortable in a less than great car as it is more what he has been used to at Williams. Basically he adapted his driving faster. Does that make him a better driver than Lewis? Ask me after he has won 8 WDC. Same applies to Max. No matter how fast the car it still has to be driven consistently week after week, something that Lewis was very good at. Fingers crossed that merc sorts it out soon.

It's more like why HAM is so off the pace whereas RUS is going quite well! It's something similar to when JB was making the most of the McLaren in 2012 and HAM couldn't. Don't understand why Toto is so apologetic about it. The driver is supposed to bring the best out of the car, not simply win when the car is good. Look at ALO in 2012 when he almost dragged the slower car to championship glory.

You tried to deflect from the point but said nothing to disprove it. Hamilton does not perform when he doesn't have a dominant car. 2009-12 he had a competitive car and failed. Now we see him in an upper midfield car and has only walked away with points from all 3 weekends due to luck. George, who the last time he was in a Merc would have won handily had it not been for a shoddy pit crew and a puncture, is second in the championship. He only has that second place due to the same luck, but he has elevated the car unlike Hamilton who for his whole career has depended on it.

2009 he won 2 races and 4 poles with one of the most slowest cars. He was the best driver this year 2010 Lewis did a miracle for fighting for the wdc with the 3rd best car overall until the final race. Alonso and Lewis deserved the most 2011 was bizarre year for him. On the first half season he had 2 stunning wins and multiples podiums. 2012 hamilton was the most fastest driver. 4 wins and 7 poles he could have at least 4 more wins without bad luck, bad reliability, bad pitstop and strategy or people crashing into him. He was A LOT unlucky this year. So on this period he should won 2010 and 2012 but was unlucky these year

First of all Lewis is a hell of a driver, being that said, he also has been VERY LUCKY to be on the best car on the grid for the past years. of the 20 drivers out there, most probably 5-10 of them would had the same WC´s if they were on the merc instead of Lewis. skills take about 50-40% of the whole deal, which , almost all the drivers have already i.e. Alonso, Max, Leclerc to name the best of them. if this new regulations have shown something is that yes, Cars make drivers win WC´s and not the other way around. Look at checo performance after he went to RB, look at Leclerc situation right now. if you are in one of those 5-10 drivers, you will rank up if you are given a faster car (sorry gasly, Albon) few drivers can make that % difference to win over faster machines. (2021 Max is a good example). Merc will come around eventually and gain some time thats for sure, but without the faster car, it will not take championships anymore, doesnt matter if its hamilton or freaking Senna.
