The HUGE Difference Between the McLaren and Aston Martin

Well, the front wing isn’t the area I thought we’d be looking so closely at - but there we go.
So, as of now we’ve had time to analyse three cars. The Haas, the Aston and the Macca - and all three are surprisingly different.
ESPECIALLY the front wings - which really highlights the differences in the aero packages as a whole - so we’ve got Scarbs to break it down for us -
{He has this mad brain that can just see in CFD, probably}
Anyway…

But Callum, Red Bull announced their car too? Well, as everyone has been saying - that’s literally the Silverstone show car but in Red Bull fancy dress. Apparently, some of the aero bits actually don’t comply with the current aero regs - lol.
Anyway, lets get into it. The Haas was the first to announce a car - and, yes it’s a Render - not a real car - but still, there are some interesting bits to look into.
the thing that we can tell straight away is it looks very different from the f1 show car and in particular with those fat fronted side pods now you've got to remember that barge boards have been taken away lots of the ways that the teams flow the air have been taken away so hearts are using a big fat side pod front in order to push the air around the car to get the front tire wake away from the car so it's all kind of like a fake barge ball shape and what they're also trying to do is bring all the radiators up high and forwards in order to get that super slim rear end and we will see some of the louvers on the back of the house
But the most interesting thing was that front wing - it was the first time we saw that separated lower plane of the wing - with the nose-mounted to the second plane.
This allows for cleaner flow around that lower plane, as well as into the floor after that. It was also very mid-loaded, so if you look, the middle of each front wing plane was most aggressively shaped.
This is similar to a lot of the 2021 cars - and was what we expected with these cars. But then the Aston shook things up a little.

    From my understanding, the design of McLaren is trying to conquer their weakness in the past years. Having a lower front wing helps to create more downforce at a lower speed, compared to the tunnels which is lean more towards high-speed situations. With the pull rod design in the front, I think the team is looking to transfer some stability duty in high-speed corners to a lower center of gravity suspension system. Also, from the driving style of both Mclaren drivers(especially Daniel) and the past performance of the vehicle, I think the team agrees to sacrifice some advantage in hard-braking corners and high-speed corners to overcome their weakness in lower speed corners. So we might see a less aggressive Mclaren in the Monza, but a more well-rounded overall performance from the team. I really hope Daniel benefit from the regulations change and get back in form, and Norris getting his first win this year.

    I reckon this might be a sensible approach, since you spend more time in slower corners than faster corners and there is more to gain. Red Bull have also generally prioritised slow-speed functionality over faster corners, and it’s worked well for them.

  • @ivorytitan7653

    @ivorytitan7653

    I believe McLaren have always been strong in high speed corners and tracks (Monza ofc) so makes sense for them to sacrifice some high speed corner performance for more well rounded performance at low speeds, and maybe help Daniel too

    James Key has also said that "the nature of the 2022 cars means it’s probably a little easier to maintain some of the strengths that we have." So the theory to focus on slow speed performance means they could create a competitive balanced car on all tracks.

  • @sombraarthur

    I think this is spot on. I would also liketo add that to me, the pullrod at the front is aimed to offset some of introduced changes of the lower profile tyres, where the pullrod tends to be a bit more efficient in terms of setting up the best stiffness of the front suspension. If it is too stiff, the car will bottom-out and lose time, performance and it is a big risk. Too little, and that low nose is going to be at pieces every single race. To me, McLaren found a way (which in a sense is pretty similar to what they do on Indy Cars) to keep that underfloor at the best height at all times, so I guess that McLaren will run "wider" in the corners than their rivals.

    Williams is the most radical design I have seen so they're ones to watch for me. Also, AR has given away quite a lot from the looks of things so I look forward to seeing what that looks like. McLarens design seems the most conventional in terms of packaging but with the suspension it's gone the opposite, where as AMR has gone the other way, unconventional with the packaging and more conventional with the suspension. This is all very exciting stuff for the tech nerds.

    The AM having a high front wing is good because they can get more air into those side tunnels which means they get more air sucking the car to the ground

    The wet weather on the last day of testing gave away Mclarens trick. They have a really powerful Vortex (the McVortex) sealing the floor. Way more powerful than everyone elses. Looks like they did the unthinkable and raised the front floor slightly to expose the strakes on the side of the floor to perform vortex generation That entire lack of undercut seems ridiculous until you realize it's pushing air into that area and driving these vortices to seal the floor
