Aston Martin have come up with a GENIUS new rear wing. They seem to have found a really clever loophole in the regulations to allow them to produce more downforce.
Where the regs say no to end plates - Aston Martin have found a way to do it legally.
But on top of that, we think this is such a big move that it’s very likely that many of the teams are already working on a copy.
So lets get into how they did it, and how much difference it’s actually going to make.
So first, why would Aston want an end plate on their rear wing?
It’s because it enables them to create more downforce by making the wing more efficient. They do this by keeping flow from spilling off the end of the wing.
So a wing on a race car creates low pressure below the wing, and high pressure above it - this difference puts a downward load on the wing - downforce. But if you have no end plate on the wing, then the high pressure wants to spill around the edge to the low pressure below.
That means that not all of the surface of the wing is creating peak downforce - and therefore makes them less efficient.
So an end plate stops this. And if you look on road car wings, race cars and even some planes - they have end plates to make them more efficient.

I think that it's likely for them to at least challenge the top team next season, given the crews they have + Alonso as both driver and aerodynamicist. As for this season, Aston have Vettel as a driver and engineer.

This is the work of their new head of aero that they got this year in April, Dan Fallows. He was the head of aero at Red Bull for a long time probably working with Newey. Pretty sure that is the kind of signing that Alonso paid attention to before signing for Aston Martin. AM next year's car will be more competitive than people think.

yeah, if I was Aston rn. with a driver like Alonzo coming into the fold, and vettel leaving, I'd be using this years care almost purely as a testbed for next year's design. This is why I was surprised to see this loophole upgrade before the long break. I figured this would've been something to bring on start of next year or after break as to not give a month of time for the other teams to work this idea into their cars.

Thats not how aerodynamic departments work at f1 teams. The head of aero manages over 100 people, he won't have touched this concept apart from possibly giving the go ahead to the interpretation of the rules. Seems like they could have probably kept this for themselves for pretty much the rest of the year if they just waited till after. It's not in the spirit of the rules. It's clear because we have this talk. It's not like with the sidepods where every team had a different approach and Mercedes showed up with a 2nd one that was very different. With these Endplates, there is nothing to protest right away. Aston Martin is 9th. Williams is out of reach, and so they don't gain anything. Alpha Tauri is the direct competitor but I think Red Bull told them not to do anything. Every team had a chance to look how this idea would turn out and having the summer break, they can copy the idea and test it. Would this wing be on a car of the top 5, I can guarantee that there would have been a protest, because the risk is too high that it can hurt the competition and they can't get it work on their car.

The flex plank issue (to my understanding) has been, by a lot of youtube comments, poorly understood as 'a way to reduce poirposing, thus the TD is unfair etc etc etc'. Whereas the reality was the flex plank was 'discovered' when the FIA started trying to formalise a metric for max vertical load on the driver due to cars bottoming out as they need to run so low and stiff (ie not really related to porpoising, although it doesn't help if you have too much). The plank rules are pretty well defined. The issue was the FIA scrutineering test to check for compliance. Like the flex wings last year, the rules were very well defined, but the scrutineering test to check for compliance was poor and didn't take into account race conditions. Again, Ferarri, with the fuel thing, well defined rules, Ferarri found a way to trick the sensor the FIA were using to allow more fuel through than was detected. TL;DR the plank wear rules are clear, the FIA also had many meetings with teams pre-season discussing what they defined as the plank rules (with ground effect meaning ride-heights etc were more crucial they knew there was scope for issue) however, only testing compliance at a limited set of positions meant you could have more wear in other places which IS against the rules as written. Hence the TD.

I do believe vortices are generated quite severely by having no endplate as well as the primary reason for fitting them on airplane wings (where they are called winglets) is to reduce vortex formation thereby reducing drag and also saving a few rooftiles from being blown off the houses they fly over. If the endplates generates massive vortices then something is off with the design. On airplaines the winglets are on the side with low pressure and often only cover 50-70% of the chord length leaving the front part of the wingtip open. Putting full length endplates on the high pressure side is more of a brute force approach and will likely generate considerable drag but the reason it is beneficial is the "slotted flap" configuration of the wing which sends the compressed air from the top of the forward airfoil up below the rear airfol where the real downforce is created by allowing the wing to maintain a much higher angle of attack without "stalling" which would cause even more drag than the endplates do.

It’s an ingenious bit of lateral thinking from the aero team at Aston Martin but the fact that no team has protested it could well illustrate the gains of this pseudo end plate are nominal at best given the constraints placed on its design by the regulations. Maybe we’ll see a load of Aston style endplates after the summer break but I think given it’s a loophole that could well be closed by the FIA and it’s potentially limited real world effectiveness is it a bit of a downforce cul-de-sac in the cost cap era?

I wonder if this design was initially discovered accidentally. I'd expect that they built the wing shape up in CAD and they put all the dimensions and limitations in as parametric variables. This allows you to play with dimensions and the CAD package will reshape everything to fit. If they then pushed an element beyond the normal limit or something wasn't as locked down as it should have been, it's not uncommon for the CAD program to find a mathematical solution that still meets the requirements, but it does something unexpected. Often you get impossible designs, but occasionally the design suddenly pops to a weird shape that do still conform with all your requirements and can still be built.
