The car so good it shocked Mercedes
Спорт
If you found this interesting I highly recommend you listen to The Race's podcast "The Untold Stories of Mercedes' Rise to Dominance." It's where I got a lot of the information for this video and is a great listen.
Inspired by the car so good it shocked Ferrari, it got me thinking of some other examples of times in Formula 1 where a team was prepared for the worst, but got the best.
Obviously this led me straight to the 2015 Mercedes W05, the car that would give Lewis Hamilton his third world title and would be the start of domination like the sport hadn't seen before.

W07 was even greater, but we will have to take into account that they probably lost Australia and Canada without the calamity of Ferrari strategy.

Yeah it is the most dominant car with the best driver lineup, just a shame red bull will never allow that. And I don't think you know but both Australia Canada would have been a win either way because Merc had powers modes that they could have used and they were just too fast for the Ferrari
@sandalphoncpu

No it wasn’t even close. W05 is the fastest car by more than 1.5s on every single circuit and nobody can challenge them on pace. They have brake issues and other over heating issues throughout the year, but so does RB. All of their losses are due to driver errors and their inability to manage their issues relative to others like Ricciardo. W07 is about 1s faster than everyone at best and other top drivers can challenge them on pace like Vettel did in Australia and Canada. They had similar reliability issues and they have massively slow in Monaco, Singapore and other humid tracks. W07 got more wins was precisely because both drivers are driving at a higher level and other forms of luck from the FIA and rival teams faltering

W07 is the most succesful of all these cars, but won most races by smaller margins. It wasn't a walk in the park. In Germany Rosberg fell to 4th place at the start and finished there, because he got a penalty for pushing Max of the track because he couldn't get close and do it other way. Compared to the other cars W05 and 06 were much more competitive.

the current Red Bull car is much more dominant than W07 ever was. It only lacks one driver to promote front row lockouts every race.

I wouldn't know, I completely tuned out between 2014-2020 just due to how God awful and boring the racing was during that time, at the end of the day the on track product is what's most important and while red bull dominance now is similar, at least the on track product and racing is far superior due to much better chassis regulations, I'm still not a huge fan of the power unit regulations but at least the racing is better

I believe you have the split engine departments switched. The 'tank' one was the reliability engine. The 'fragile' one was the one for maximum performance
@Jay-nk6dm
10 ай бұрын
that doesnt make sense. if you want to test maximum performance capability of an engine, you build it so nothing can break and then you can push. if you want to test reliability, you purposely make things fragile, and then wait till something breaks, upgrade that, and keep going

This is a great example of small things that separate those who are brilliant from those who are ordinary. by having a tank engine which has maximum performance and a lightweight engine that is very reliable, engineers can mix elements to create an amazing all rounder engine.

Unfair comparison. The W11 was a monster of a car, and probably the fastest in F1 history to date, but the 2022 car is a completely new regulation series which means everyone is going to be a lot slower. New regulations take YEARS of ironing out. Comparing the W11 to a car from a future year when the ground effect era has progressed would be a much more potent comparison, since the W11 is the absolute peak of the design philosophy during that era of car design. It'd make no sense to compare it to the start of a different regulation series.
Do a video on Alonso vs Hamilton during the Vettel seasons. Alonso actually beat Lewis every year from 2010-2013 in a slower car. Could make a good eye opening video for many.
@denzel9086
10 ай бұрын
We can do that after we do videos explaining how Trulli beat Fernando in 2004 and got the boot because of it, how Fernando snitched to the FIA/French Police in the middle of the spygate 2007 saga and a introspection of his McLaren Honda years, notably the 2015 season where he was beaten by Jenson Button.
@isaacm2374
10 ай бұрын
I would disagree with that. When you look at Alonso vs Hamilton and Button in his 3 years he was their teammate. He finished behind them in two season 2007 and 2015 and only beat Jenson in 2016 and was also outqualified by Lewis 10-7. Which shows he must have had a car advantage against Hamilton and Button to beat them in 2010-2012. Alonso himself said in the podcast the Ferrari was the better is just that Lewis with Button and then with Rosberg had a stronger team than Alonso/Massa which made finish higher in the constructors.

There would be a lot to pack and unpack in that video Don’t remember the F10 being slower than the mp4-25, Alonso made a few driver errors 2010 (I was at Spa the Sunday when he dropped it in the wet) and Massa wasn’t as fast as Lewis or Jensen or Nico to cost him points. Mercedes dominance is a result of the fact that they had their v6 engines ready before even the rules were announced. Simple as that.
ur hair made me think you were vettel for a second
The years when Hamilton & Rosberg were dominating made Mercedes look like gods
Eeecckk that change to Veritasium music. Feels so wrong. I know it shouldnt but it made it weird watching.
Everybody was completely lost that winter. Remember Red Bull breaking before lefting the pit lane? It was Honda levels of unreliability. those Renault engines were terrible, but Newey's designs were so efficient they could trim the rear wing to a bare minimum to compensate for the lack of power and the car was still very competitive.
Man im really surprised you look like seb vettel with that hair

What about secret test before Monaco race in 2013, and the tyre inversion trick in 2013 to have poles?
I (we) miss the white (silver) Mercedes. I mean, there is enough black car on the pit right now.
There are lots of shadows behind this car. Simply too fast to be legal and to have been engineered alongside the other teams. Merc surely knew something about the new rules far before everyone else in the paddock, at least for what concerns the engine. Also shady 2013 tests with Pirelli. Many things don’t add. Ferrari had the same advantage of Mercedes in terms of not having to buy the engine from a supplier but made a crapbox car and an even worse engine. It’s not that simple
Keep the content coming it makes me h***y
