Whitney Elizabeth Houston was born into a musical family on 9 August 1963, in Newark, New Jersey, the daughter of gospel star Cissy Houston (née Emily Lee Drinkard) and John Russell Houston, Jr., and cousin of singing star Dionne Warwick.
She began singing in the choir at her church, The New Hope Baptist Church in Newark, as a young child and by the age of 15 was singing backing vocals professionally with her mother on Chaka Khan's 1978 hit, 'I'm Every Woman'. She went on to provide backing vocals for Lou Rawls, Jermaine Jackson and her own mother and worked briefly as a model, appearing on the cover of 'Seventeen' magazine in 1981.
She began working as a featured vocalist for the New York-based funk band Material and it was the quality of her vocal work with them that attracted the attention of the major record labels, including Arista with whom she signed in 1983 and where she stayed for the rest of her career.
Her debut album, 'Whitney Houston', was released in 1985 and became the biggest-selling album by a debut artist. Several hit singles, including 'Saving All My Love For You', 'How Will I Know', 'You Give Good Love', and 'The Greatest Love of All', were released from the album, setting her up for a Beatles-beating seven consecutive US number ones. The album itself sold 3 million copies in its first year in the US and went on to sell 25 million worldwide, winning her the first of her six Grammies.
The 1987 follow-up album, 'Whitney', which included the hits 'Where Do Broken Hearts Go' and 'I Wanna Dance With Somebody', built on her success but it was the 1992 film The Bodyguard (1992) that sealed her place as one of the best-selling artists of all time. While the movie itself and her performance in it were not highly praised, the soundtrack album and her cover of the Dolly Parton song 'I Will Always Love You' topped the singles and albums charts for months and sold 44 million copies around the world.
That same year she married ex-New Edition singer Bobby Brown with whom she had her only child, their daughter Bobbi Kristina Brown in March 1993. It was about this time that her much documented drug use began and by 1996 she was a daily user.
Her 1998 album, 'My Love Is Your Love' was well reviewed but the drug abuse began to affect her reputation and press reports at the time said that she was becoming difficult to work with, if she turned up at all. She was dropped from a performance at The 72nd Annual Academy Awards (2000) because she was "out of it" at rehearsals. Her weight fluctuated wildly - she was so thin at a 'Michael Jackson' tribute in 2001 that rumors circulated the next day that she had died - and her voice began to fail her. She was twice admitted to rehab and declared herself drug-free in 2010 but returned to rehab in May 2011.
Her 2009 comeback album 'I Look To You' was positively received and sold well, but promotional performances were still marred by her weakened voice. Her final acting performance was in Sparkle (2012) (a remake of the 1976 movie, Sparkle (1976)), released after her death.
Houston reportedly appeared "disheveled" and "erratic" in the days before her death. On February 9, 2012, Houston visited singers Brandy and Monica, together with Clive Davis, at their rehearsals for Davis's pre-Grammy Awards party at The Beverly Hilton in Beverly Hills. That same day, she made her last public performance when she joined Kelly Price on stage in Hollywood, California, and sang "Jesus Loves Me".
Two days later, on February 11, Houston was found unconscious in Suite 434 at the Beverly Hilton, submerged in the bathtub. Beverly Hills paramedics arrived about 3:30 pm, found Houston unresponsive, and performed CPR. Houston was pronounced dead at 3:55 pm PST. The cause of death was not immediately known; local police said there were "no obvious signs of criminal intent".
Houston was buried on February 19, 2012, in Fairview Cemetery, in Westfield, New Jersey, next to her father, John Russell Houston, who had died in 2003.
On March 22, 2012, the Los Angeles County Coroner's Office reported that Houston's death was caused by drowning and the "effects of atherosclerotic heart disease and cocaine use". The office said the amount of cocaine found in Houston's body indicated that she used the substance shortly before her death. Toxicology results revealed additional drugs in her system: diphenhydramine (Benadryl), alprazolam (Xanax), cannabis, and cyclobenzaprine (Flexeril). The manner of death was listed as an "accident".

I saw Whitney in concert twice, once before Thee Body Guard, and once after The Body Guard. Both concerts were incredible!!! The second time, she was fresh off making the movie. 😊😊😊 She looked and sounded perfect, of course. She must have done 6 costume changes and looked more beautiful with each change! You couldn't help but fall in love all over again with her voice when she sang "I Will Always Love You". She was simply stunning that night and pitch perfect. It's sad she's gone.....a legend in time....perfection to listen too.....and sadly now an angel we will all miss! ❤❤❤❤

I was there as part of the press. We had arrived early around the 2pm hour in preparation for the Clive Davis Pre-Grammy Gala. A rumor had started to circulate throughout the main lobby that that someone was in distress up on the 4th Floor. They soon said it was Whiney Houston. Then tons of cops showed up and ordered all press (which had now packed the place) not to leave the lobby. The paramedics arrived but they never left with Whitney. Afterwards, the crime scene wagon showed up. After they left around 5:30 pm, the limos started to arrive with the gala guests. They left Whitney in that room overnight and took her body out the next morning. A lot of people, (friends and fans alike), were highly pissed that the party (red carpet arrival and all) went on without a hitch. They were eating, drinking, performing and partying their asses off in the ballroom while Whitney laid lifeless 4 floors above. The conspiracy theorists chalked it up to being a sacrifice ritual. Then Nikki Manaj in her Grammy. performance the next night levitated above the stage to simulate 4 stories above the party below. Just saying! I enjoy your videos, Scott.

I've had the honor to see Whitney Houston in concert twice, both times at the CNE grandstand. The first time I had 16th row floors and I swear that you could hear her so clearly like she was right beside you, I was in complete awe and honestly when I think back on it I still am. Her voice was perfection, there will never be another Whitney Houston.

I'm in her very first video, 'You Give Good Love'. It was shot in a restaurant on 13st in Manhattan the director/camera person Lisa Rinzler was a friend of mine and talked me into it. Whitney wasn't famous yet, in fact the only reason I showed up was because they were saying 'Cissy Houston's daughter'. I definitely knew who her mother was. In addition to everything else they were gonna pay me. The call was at 6am on a Sunday morning and we shot until well after midnight. During the long day everyone made friends. Robyn Crawford was there. No one was famous...

I can remember exactly where I was and the news announcement, as if it were yesterday. It is still heartbreaking. 🕊 I get the logistics and financial aspects, but still found it creepy that the Clive Davis' party was 'business as usual.' Thank you for posting, Scott.

Scott, thanks for this video tribute. I've visited Whitney's grave frequently, even before there was a headstone in place (it took more than a year for one to be installed). As has been mentioned, security was awful and harassing during that time, but they've slowly backed off. You can always locate the row by knowing that it's about 2/3 of the way down that lane and there is a forked tree at the end of the row (against the fence). Also, I often noticed one or two traffic cones in that road marking the row.

I was in a hotel room in Florida when I heard about her passing all over the news on every station. Hearing about her passing hit me hard because I listened to her music and her beautiful voice in my teenage years in the 1980’s I’ll never forget her voice. I didn’t realize that Whitney Houston is buried in Westfield New Jersey which is only about 45 minutes Southwest from where I live. Beautiful grave stone. May both Whitney and Bobby Kristina rest in eternal peace.
