A veteran personal injury attorney, Alex Murdaugh, 54, was heir to a legal dynasty that has held sway over South Carolina's Lowcountry region for more than a century. On 7 June 2021, he reported finding his wife Maggie, 52, and son Paul, 22, dead near the dog kennels on the family's sprawling estate.
No arrests were made for more than a year, but Murdaugh was indicted last July on two counts of murder and two counts of possession of a weapon while committing a violent crime.
He insisted he was not involved in the deaths, but state prosecutors argued he shot the pair at close range with a rifle and shotgun.
After less than three hours, a jury found him guilty on all charges.
He now faces 30 years to life in prison without the possibility of parole. Prosecutors chose not to seek the death penalty.
The convicted murderer is separately facing a wave of financial charges, including allegations he embezzled millions from the family-founded law firm at which he was a partner.
Prosecutors said in court that he murdered his wife and son to distract from his misdeeds and gain sympathy.
They called more than 60 witnesses over four weeks in an effort to poke holes in Murdaugh's alibi and expose numerous inconsistencies in his version of events.
Investigators never found a murder weapon, but the prosecution built its case using circumstantial evidence including mobile phone data and gunshot residue.
Perhaps the most significant piece of evidence was a video taken by Paul at the dog kennels minutes before he died, in which Murdaugh can be heard in the background. For 20 months after the murders, Murdaugh insisted he had not been at the kennels that night, before admitting at trial he had lied.
Over two days on the witness stand last week, Murdaugh testified in his own defence - a high-risk move for any defendant.
He acknowledged for the first time he was at the dog kennels that night shortly before his wife and son were killed.
He conceded he had lied several times to investigators, citing a long-standing addiction to prescription pain-killers that made him "paranoid".
And he admitted to years of theft from clients and people he "loved and cared about" so that he could fund his abuse of opiates.
But, he said, none of it meant he was guilty. Tearfully referring to the victims as "Mags" and "Paw Paw", he said: "I would never intentionally do anything to hurt either one of them."
The testimony was Murdaugh's "Hail Mary", Mrs Williams told BBC News. She said that, as a former prosecutor, he knew juries like to hear from a defendant and knew he had to explain why he said he lied.
In 2018, the family's long-time housekeeper, Gloria Satterfield, died after an apparent accident at their home. Murdaugh encouraged her adult children to file a wrongful death lawsuit. Murdaugh's insurance company paid out to the tune of $4.3m, but the Satterfields did not receive a dime. Murdaugh later admitted he had kept it all.
Police are now re-examining how Ms Satterfield died. The Murdaugh family claim she tripped over their dogs and fell down the stairs.
The year after, Paul drunkenly crashed a boat in an accident that killed one of his passengers, Mallory Beach. He had been charged and was out on bail at the time of his death. Murdaugh implied on the stand that he had faced death threats since the incident.
Three months after his wife and son died, in September 2021, Murdaugh was injured in a roadside shooting. Authorities later revealed he had staged a botched hit job on himself with the aid of a distant cousin, so that Buster could collect a life insurance policy.

Such a twisted, sad story. Unfortunately, I don't think we've seen the last of the Murdaugh saga. Judge Newman has my complete respect for the way he handled this tragic case and I hope more judges follow his example. Thank you Scott for telling this story in such a respectful way. If that indeed is true, it's an horrific act to do to what's essentially the worst victims of the litany of despicable crimes Alex perpetrated, and on his loved ones no less. However, I must speak up for the South Carolinians, and I could be wrong, but even with all the terrible things AM did to his community, I simply cannot imagine a single person from the low country that would stoop so low as to vandalise a headstone or grave marker as you call it. Maybe it's just an excuse they use, like they do for everything else in life when faced with accountability.

I watched the Trial on You Tube, and knew of the case, and I live in Scotland. My Father who is 93 read about the case in the Daily Mail. When I tell him I am watching this trial or that trial, he does not take much notice, but when I told him about this one, he asked "is the guy tall and red hair" and I was surprised he knew anything about it, but the paper did a large piece on the Murdaugh's. This has been named the trial of the century (of course we are only in 2023 - there are many decades to go. for another trial to come along and know this one off the top). The Daybellls (aka the Dumbbells) will be another trial that is OTT. When it's a family killing and there are multiple dead, it normally gets more international cover. With The internet, we learn a lot more than we ever would.

Great job Scott. 👍 I live in South Carolina, and that was shocking to me, when it happened. The sad thing is, sometimes people think they can commit crimes, and because of their name, they can get away with it, free and clear. Well, no one is above the law, and eventually karma plays a part, no matter of your name, your fame, your money, etc... I've said too much. Thank you for sharing your video. Stay safe, and God bless ❤️ 🙏❤️

I watched the trail on Emily Baker channel and it was such a long trail. I was so happy they found him Guilty!!! I have watched all the shows on this case and thought the Netflix was the best. One thing I had learned was that night Maggie was texting her sister about how Alex wanted her to come over that night and she thought something was up. She had a bad feeling about it. I wish she would of listened to that bad feeling. She might still be here.

Thank you so much for showing us around the Murdaugh locations. I was following this trial quite compulsively from South Africa. It was riveting, but very sad. I don't know who Alex thought he was fooling, his story was so obviously concocted. Still, I have trouble visualising him in the act of gunning down his wife and son, I am quite sure his face was contorted with anger. What shock it must have been for Maggie when she realised his deadly intention.

Thank you for putting this complicated story together in a way that makes it easy to follow. What a sad case this is. I believe most criminal cases are tried under circumstantial evidence. It isn't often that there are eyewitnesses to a crime. He is like the little boy that cried wolf. To many lies did him in. Even though I do believe in the death penalty, sometimes I think life in prison is a worse sentence. Scott, even with this case being all over the news like so many others you have done, you always find a way to bring something new to the story like showing us his law office and the gravesites of Maggie and Paul. I will never understand the heart of someone who could kill their own family or anyone really. RIP to all of the victims 🙏❤💐

It's fascinating despite the macabre aspect. Even with all the coverage and documentaries I've watched, I've never seen Maggie and Paul's graves before this. It's so sad to see they have no gravestones yet and all the flowers lovingly placed there, including the sunflowers they enjoyed so much. Thanks again - you really do an exceptional job covering sensitive topics. You're really talented!
